H UM S INFOGRA P HIC : He a lth and Usage Monitoring System HUMS: By the Numbers Health and Usage Monitoring System (HUMS) A STUDY OF HUMS ON AH-64 APACHES FOUND : HUMS is a sensor-based monitoring system that enables Condition-Based Maintenance by measuring the health and performance of mission-critical components in aircraft. 1 30 By continuously monitoring vibration at numerous points throughout the drivetrain, and pinpointing mechanical faults before they become catastrophic failures, HUMS provides actionable information that allows informed maintenance decisions. REDUCTION IN MISSION ABORTS 20 Benefits of Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) ENHANCES SAFETY REDUCTION IN MAINTENANCE TEST FLIGHTS A proactive approach heads off accidents before they happen. Data signaling potential problems on one aircraft can be used to comprehensively analyze an entire fleet. INCREASES AVAILABILITY Better maintenance planning means less unplanned downtime, faster turnaround and increased mission readiness to support the warfighter. 5 - 10 REDUCES COSTS CBM substantially cuts maintenance/operating costs in the near term and over the life cycle of the aircraft and avoids costs of spares usage, dedicated test flights and asset recapitalization. Onboard Data Acquisition Unit collects analog data from sensors embedded throughout an aircraft's drivetrain and converts it to digital. 1. Data downloaded by the ground support crew can be used to monitor the health of a single aircraft or an entire fleet. 2. Diagnostic algorithms automatically analyze acquired data providing a comprehensive indication of aircraft machinery health. 3. Software and web-based tools communicate needed repairs and suggest maintenance actions.
