Administrative Message
Being Late Affects Your Child’s Learning
Children who are excessively late miss out on important classroom announcements and
teaching time. When your child enters the classroom late, he/she creates a disruption which
interferes with the learning environment of all students who are prepared and ready to
learn. Chronic tardiness is habit forming.

There are an increasing number of students who are arriving late to school this year. We
would like to ask parents to please make sure that your child(ren) arrive at the school early
enough to give them time to walk to their outside entry door prior to the bell ringing. The
office can become very busy when there is large number of students who are late and need
to sign in to get late slips. Thank you for your cooperation in ensuring your child gets to
school on time.

We also request that parents ensure that your children are dressed properly for outside
winter conditions. If your child is in need of winter clothing, please contact a member of the
admin team and we will make sure they have warm clothes and footwear.

With increasing numbers of Canadian children suffering from medical conditions such as
allergies, asthma, diabetes, and epilepsy, more parents than ever worry about their child's
safety while out of the home. Many serious conditions can be life-threatening if
emergencies are not treated appropriately. No Child Without is a MedicAlert charitable
program that has allowed more than 43,000 children with medical conditions in 3,000
elementary schools across Canada to be protected with free MedicAlert coverage. The
program includes a free medical identification bracelet and electronic health record with
24/7 access so that critical health information is quickly available during a medical
emergency. Unfortunately, more than 3,600 schools remain on the waiting list for access to
this program which means 56,000 children remain vulnerable. For more information on the

Book Fair
Dance Residency Performances

Spirit Day | Hello Day
Students at Captain John Palliser have been participating in a dance residency featuring
various types of dance from around the world. To showcase all of our hard work, we will be
hosting evening performances. Performances will begin promptly at 6 PM. Doors will open
at 5:30 PM. When you arrive, head to the gym and have your child sit with their class.
Please take note of what night your child's class is performing:

Extracurricular Clubs
Science Fair
Stay tuned for further information coming about the first Science Fair meeting. Science Fair
Club will be for students who are in grades five or six and are interested in creating a
science based project for our school Science Fair to take place in January of 2015.
Students will be required to commit to one weekly lunch hour meeting with the club's
teachers and to working on their project on a regular basis at home. Some of the
participants will also have an opportunity to represent CJP at the City Youth Science Fair in
the spring.
Destination Conservation Planet
This year CJP is starting a new club for grade 3 and 4 students called DC Planet. We will
meet every Tuesday for the rest of the school year. Students were invited to join the club in
October and completed some homework in order to be part of this club. On November 4th
some of the club members are going to a morning workshop to learn ways to get our school
involved in saving our planet. These students will share what they learn with the club at
lunch that day. Our goal for November is to create a focus project for the year. Small steps
can make a big difference.

Tech Club
Students in Grades 4, 5, and 6 have a technology club starting this month. These students
are learning about our school sound system, how to properly store, and care for laptop
computers and cameras, as well as becoming experts on helping others in using the
technology here at Captain John Palliser.
Me to We Club

Me to We students went to We Day on Monday November 3 , and were very inspired by all
of the presenters and artists. They are excited to bring their knowledge about how to make
a local and global difference back to CJP. Stay tuned for future fundraisers. Please

continue to donate non-perishable food items until November 12 for the We Scare Hunger
campaign.
Fall Running Club
th
The Fall Running Club last day will be 6 . We had over 70 students from grade 1 to 6 sign
up for the club and student enjoyed playing a variety running games and learning different
running techniques. Our school has been accepted to the Alberta Medical Association
(AMA) Youth Run Club and they will provide assistance in starting up the club again in
Spring!
Patrollers
Patrollers continue to work hard every morning and afternoon to ensure that students and
their families get across Northmount Drive safely. Congratulations to the Wednesday
morning and Thursday afternoon patrol teams, who scored highest on their assessments
when demonstrating patrol procedures at the crosswalk! Although we have enjoyed some
lovely fall weather so far, patrollers are reminded to dress for the weather and bundle up
now that the temperatures are dropping. Patrollers will not be at the crosswalk when
temperatures reach -20 degrees or colder, including wind chill.
Photo Retake Day is not far away! Below are a few pieces of information to
keep in mind:
1. Please have your child take their proof envelope, from original photo day, to the
photographer on retake day.
2. If you have lost the proof envelope, please send a handwritten note to request a
retake.
3.
If your child was absent from school on original photo day or is new to the school
please tell your child to have their photograph taken on retake day.
Scholastic Book Fair
The Scholastic Book Fair will be at our school Wednesday November 12 and Thursday,
November 13. Students will be visiting the fair during class time; they will be allowed to
purchase books during that time, but we also encourage you to look over the highlights flyer
and the wish list they will bring home. Parents are welcome to visit anytime; remember to
sign in at the office and pick up a visitor’s badge.

Did you know: 60% of the sales from this fair come back to the school in the library
and home reading materials? Last year, our Scholastic book fairs brought in over
$7000 worth of books for the library, home reading program, and English as a
Learned Language support.
You may send cash or a cheque with your child to purchase their books. Cheques should
be made out to CJP. Visa and MasterCard are also accepted when you visit the fair.

build | CBE capital project update
This fall the Calgary Board of Education welcomed more than 3,700 new students to bring
our total enrolment to a record number of nearly 114,500 students. And we know the growth
won’t stop there. We are expected to grow by another 15,000 students over the next five
years.
As a result, the CBE is facing pressures for more space for students throughout our system.
These pressures are highest in newer communities that don’t have community schools and
at the elementary level where more than 2,700 additional students enrolled in Grades 1
through 6 this year. This pressure will continue to be felt in junior and senior high schools
as our students age and move through the system.
Our role as a Board is to continue to work with the Government of Alberta to request new
schools, modernization projects and modular classrooms. The Province determines which
schools are funded and how they will be built.
Currently, the CBE has 31 capital projects underway, including replacement schools and
modernization projects. We are scheduled to open 17 new schools in September 2016.
As well, the Province made two announcements this fall to partner with the CBE to build
additional school projects in the communities of: West Springs/Cougar Ridge, Saddle
Ridge, Cranston, Aspen Woods, Martindale, Silverado and Springbank Hill/Discovery
Ridge.
The government also provided funding for modular classrooms for Westgate School, a new
south Calgary high school and major modernization projects at James Fowler and Lord
Beaverbrook high schools.
The CBE is grateful to the government for this investment in education.

Updated Ranking Criteria for Capital Projects
This spring the CBE carried out a review of the ranking criteria to be used for school capital
planning. Each year the CBE submits plans to the Province for three types of capital
projects: new schools, modernization of existing schools, and modulars. The CBE ranks the
priority of each of these projects and submits the plans to Alberta Education for funding
each year. Alberta Education then decides which projects to fund.
The review of the ranking criteria was carried out to ensure that the criteria were complete
and fair. The process included extensive public engagement which resulted in several
changes and adjustments. Public participants agreed that the revised criteria incorporated
their input and were non-discriminatory in the method for ranking communities and projects.
For new K-9 schools, the ranking criteria used includes all pre-school children, actual
distance of the community to the overflow school and five year future community growth.
This data is updated annually with the most recent city census numbers.
The review also adjusted the ranking criteria for modernizations and, for the first time,
created objective ranking criteria for modulars. These criteria can be viewed on the CBE

The new ranking criteria are now in use by the CBE. A new modular classroom plan was
approved at the Oct. 14 Board meeting. The CBE will be requesting 28 modular classrooms
for 11 schools across the system. New school and modernization requests will be
presented in the Three-Year School Capital Plan in the spring 2015.
