PASTOR’S NOTES
Vocation Awareness Week
Pope St. Pius X once said, “Every vocation to the
priesthood comes from the heart of God, but it passes
through the heart of a mother and father.”
In an interview for a Spanish-language newspaper,
Pope Francis’ only living sibling, Maria Elena Bergoglio,
recounts how their mother discovered how her brother
was interested in the priesthood.
At age 19, young Jorge Bergoglio initially felt that he
wanted to study medicine. Wanting him to have a
quiet place to study, his mother cleaned out a cluttered
closet. One day the future pope’s mother entered the
room and to her surprise she came across books on
theology.
Maria recounted the conversation between her
mother and brother:
“Jorge, come here. You told me that you were going
to study medicine.”
“Yes, mother.”
“Why did you lie to me?”
“No I did not lie to you mother; I am going to study
the medicine of the soul.”
Surprised by the news, his mother wept, because she
understood he would have to leave home to study. His
father, however, rejoiced at his son’s vocation.
Eventually the entire family embraced his call to
priesthood. Jorge Bergoglio was ordained a priest in
1969 and elected Pope in 2013.

Human Development is busy preparing for the
holidays already! If you’d like to get involved call the
Office at x 24. We are in need of volunteers for many
of the programs. The commitment varies depending
on the program. We have recently canceled Coffee
Hour for the winter months as we do not have cochairs to do the shopping, set up, and clean up. If you
think you might be interested, come to the last one
Nov. 5th as we will be talking about it! We are also in
need of co-chairpersons for the school supply program.
There are many opportunities coming up for service
hours for school or confirmation. If you have any
questions please call the Human Development Office
at ext. 24.
The Food Pantry is busy preparing for Thanksgiving.
The items we need are gravy, stuffing, sweet
potatoes/yams, canned fruit and veggies, and of course
TURKEYS! Any monetary donations will be used to
purchase turkeys, rolls, fresh potatoes pumpkin pie
filling, piecrusts, and fresh fruit. The pantry is also low
on the following items: canned chili, raviolis, beef
stew, baked beans, pork-n-beans, crackers, rice, and
fruit juice. You can drop off your donations at any time
or come and join us for food sorting Sunday and help
stock the pantry. Finish with a potluck dinner and
fellowship!
If you, your family or friends, or your company would
like to adopt a family for Christmas call the Human
Development Office at ext. 24.
MUSICAL BENEFIT FOR ST. CAMILLUS

Experience Central New York’s finest female artists as
they pay tribute to women in music who inspire them
in a live performance at the Palace Theatre in
Eastwood. Two of our parishioners – Maureen
Sheridan Henesy and Joanne Perry – are going to be
featured

PATRIOTIC ROSARY
The parish of St. Charles – St. Ann will be praying the
Patriotic Rosary on Veterans Day, November 11, 2014 at
6:30PM at St. Ann’s Church. All families and especially all
Veterans are invited to join in as we pray this rosary for the
Consecration of our Nation. The Patriotic Rosary includes
readings from our forefathers, patriotic hymns and each
state of our nation is prayed over as each of the 50 Hail
Marys are recited.
We will end the rosary as we listen to Taps and recite the

worked for the royal court, but when his emperor
broke from Rome and then appointed him bishop, the
saint refused the position, declaring his obedience to
the Church. He became bishop only after the Pope
consecrated him.

Elizabeth Ministry is an international movement
focused on the dignity of human life and strengthening
relationships in order to build up the family and create

BIBLE STUDY
Bible study facilitated by Mike Pauley has started. It
takes place on the 1st and 4th/5th Saturdays of the
month. The 2nd and 3rd Saturdays are open to afford
people the opportunity to attend Bible study at St.
Ann’s Church conducted by Fr. Brian Lange and Sister
Bridget. Mike’s study is continuing in the Book of
Revelation using a “Lectio Divina” format. Come

deceased loved ones. W e will be
especially rem em bering those who have
died from Septem ber 1,2013 to A ugust
31, 2014.
A reception will be held in the church

COUNSELING SERVICES
Holy Family has begun providing counseling services
through Catholic Charities. Mary McGrath will
provide affordable, confidential, professional
counseling to our community on Thursdays at the
convent (207 Chapel Drive). Fee is based on ability to
pay but cost need not be an obstacle. Mary makes her
own appointments – call 362-7565. You need not be a
registered parishioner to take advantage of this service.

“I was in prison and you visited me… ”
Crew socks and/or hot chocolate a holiday
tradition at Holy Family.
Jail Ministry is again gearing up for its annual
Christmas party at the Justice Center when
each person receives a bag of “goodies” to
lighten the burden of being separated from
family and friends in the holiday season. The
gifts are simple, an apple, a pen, writing
paper, word games socks, hot chocolate and
instant coffee, home made cookies and
Christmas cards to mail home. This year Jail
Ministry must plan for upwards of 650 people
and is pleased that Holy Family will collect
crew socks (white only/calf high) and boxes of
individual hot chocolate.
There will be designated boxes at all
entrances to the church through November.
