Sdn Bhd. e nt 1st Announcem GEOFEST 2014 The overall aim of the Geotechnical Engineering Festival (GEOFEST) is to encourage and support Malaysian Undergraduate students to interact and advance their knowledge and understanding of geotechnics while giving them an opportunity to promote their own research and innovative developments. The theme for GEOFEST 2014 is Soft Soil Geotechnology. This event is meant to serve as an “incubation engine” of continued research and development of future geotechnicians who will clearly be future leaders in the field. GEOFEST has been an annual UTHM event, dating back to its first event held in 2009. The feedbacks from the past events show that the student enthusiasm to participate has been encouragingly overwhelming. Following helpful discussions with academic colleagues from other Malaysian higher education and engineering institutions (UTM, UM, USM, UKM, UPNM, UPM, UNIMAS, UTAR, UCTS, KLIU, JKR, CREAM and CIDB), it has been decided to launch the GEOFEST 2014 at National Level, and invite aspiring undergraduates to participate in this prestigious event to be held this year in Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) that is the home for the Research Centre for Soft Soil (RECESS). GEOFEST 2014 Themes • • • • • • • • • Ground improvement for soft soils. Behaviour of soft soils and organics. Case histories of soft soil problems during construction and long term. Problems of long term consolidation and creep in soils. Development of testing and determination of soft soil parameters. Design aspect for foundation on soft soil. Outlook for new technology in ground improvement. New directions in placement and improvement of soft soil. Slope problems, landslide and mudflows The objectives of GEOFEST 2014 are: • • • • • • To obtain a platform for research and innovation projects especially in the field of Geotechnical Engineering on soft Soil. To assist the participants in becoming more knowledgeable in the field of Geotechnical Engineering. To assist the participants to sharpen their problem-solving skills and critical thinking. To assist participants to be prepared for career challenges, and improving skills in presenting their views and ideas with more proficiency and professionalism. To help create a healthy atmosphere of competition among participants. To create collaborations of teamwork among participants. • Dato’ Seri Ir Dr Judin Abdul Karim (CIDB) • • Ir.
