November 2014
It is hard to believe that the first nine weeks of school has come to a close. We are
off to a great start here at Shady Hill this year and we look forward to continuing our
journey together. The staff and students have kicked it into high gear and are ”Cooking
Up Success!” At this rate, we are well on our way to becoming an “A” school for the eighth
year.
I am sure your child has already told you and the answer is YES…we do have a
new Assistant Principal. Shanon Lafferty has joined the Shady Hill family as our new
Assistant Principal. Mrs. Lafferty comes to us with lots of experience and is going to be a
great asset to our staff as well as our students. If you see Mrs. Lafferty around campus in
the morning or in the afternoon please introduce yourself and welcome her to this great
school.
Shady Hill students are reading lots of books, and we have over 7,300 AR points
so far. Team Bennett is in the lead by about 60 points, so it’s a close race. Team Lafferty
should have no trouble catching up. This is a fun and motivating way to get the students
excited about Reading. They approach us daily telling us what they are reading and how
many points they’ve earned. WAY TO GO KIDS!!!
We have several after-school clubs underway here at Shady Hill: Good News
Business Partner Club, and the 4-H Club. Soon, we will be starting the Writer’s Workshop and S.M.A.R.T
2014-2015
Tutoring. These clubs offer students excellent learning opportunities and also give them

a chance to be involved socially with other students. We are thrilled with the positive
responses we have had thus far from our club participants and parents.
A BIG thank you goes out to our PTA, led by Diana Scroggie, for organizing our
Fall Festival this year. They worked long hours organizing, setting up, and running this
wonderful event, in which the students had a blast. We would also like to thank all
volunteers, including our fabulous teachers and staff, for staying late and helping make
this event possible. What you all do for our students does not go unnoticed and we
appreciate every ounce of support we receive.
Finally parents, please check your child’s planner, weekly communication folder,
and help us by making sure your child does his/her homework. Homework is practice
that reinforces the skills that are taught in class. It is imperative that they complete
these activities. Also, don’t forget to check your child’s academic progress at any time by
visiting the parent portal. It is a great way to keep up with their grades. Your
involvement is always appreciated.

Great job Shady Hill with selling coupons. We came in third for the entire school district,
raising almost $8,000 dollars. Congratulations to Mrs. Davies for being the top selling teacher
in the district. A big congrats to Lauryann Pinellas and Laney Reese for being our school’s top
two sellers. Also, thank you to all of our families who participated in the wrapping paper sale,
every project you participate in is money that impacts your child’s classroom! Keep up the
good work!
