Heavy rain and thunderstorms continue in Guatemala and are likely to cause increased bleeding berries; production and quality team are aware and selecting accordingly. Tupi arrival expected early in the week Mexico December 2014 Berries Strawberries Holland/Belgi 400g um Elsanta Glass house fruit is becoming more uniform in size. Minor contact bruising remains present, but overall quality is good. Brix levels have dipped between 7-8% as expected with glass house crop; overcast weather is also affecting the brix levels. As a result of the previously higher temperatures we are seeing some slight tipburn but generally only on the outer leaf to a depth of 1 - 2mm. The temperatures this week have dropped. This means that the growth of the crop will slow and this will lead to a reduction in weights. The forecast is for temperatures to remain cooler well into next week meanings we can expect an extended period of reduced weights. The reduction in temperatures that has happened this week and is forecast to continue into next week has already started to affect the overall availability and weight of the product. This will probably result in requests for concessions. From being in a position of harvesting up to 2 weeks early the slowed growth in the crop will cause a gap the length of which can only be determined by the length of the cold spell. At the moment we can expect this situation to last at least 2 weeks. Product is already arriving to a good frame size but fluffy internally Crop Report - Week Commencing 10th November 2014 (Week 46) Product Origin Variety Cos Lettuce SPAIN LUCIO Watermelon Brazil Extazy / Quetzali Kenya, India, Gambia, Baby Aubergine 1.8kg Dominican Republic, RAG Rating Issues Following Starting Season As with the Iceberg and gem the reduction in temperatures has slowed the growth in the crop and will result in lower weights in the product. Quality generally remains good with still occasional ribby product or occasional slight twisting. The severe water shortages in brazil are problematic for this fruit at the present time. The flesh is not a dark as it should be although in general the flavour is there. Watermelons are in short supply at the moment. We are trying to isolate any pallets with this issue by increased cut tests both here and in brazil. There is only a very short harvest interval date for watermelons which makes the point to harvest more difficult. We are expecting to see an improvement in the situation during the coming week. Following Starting Season UK June 2015 Chile December 2014 Further to my last report and the issues we have been experiencing with arrivals from Costa Rica over the last few months we are now starting to see some improvement in the grading and quality of fruit. This is due to resting some of the farms affected the most and implementing new ones we have also had reports that growing conditions are improving due to good weather. Dominican Republic are in good production however we have seen a slight decrease in the sizing of fruit.
