1
MENA GROWTH
UAE DEVELOPMENT
• W
ith the wave of ongoing development in the
MENA (diversification, industrialisation, social and
infrastructure development), electricity demand is
expected to surge, resulting in a 45-50 per cent increase
in power generation capacity over the period 2015 –
2020, requiring investments to the tune of nearly
$200 billion.
• W
ith energy expansion covering gas, renewables, coal
and nuclear generating capabilities, the market will
remain highly attractive to international developers.
• Th
e largest share of total power investments will be
directed towards power generation. Such investment
will be critical to addressing the rapid increase in
electricity consumption, forecast at a CAGR of 9-10
per cent for the period 2013 – 2018.
• Th
e share of renewable energy within the total energy
mix is also forecast to grow within the MENA region
rising from 0.64 per cent to as high as 9-11 per cent
by 2020.
• E
nergy efficiency will also be critical to meeting peak
demand by way of increasing installed capacity and
curtailing demand through social awareness and active
demand side management.
• U
nder the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030,
the emirate is planning energy-efficient initiatives
including a solar PV park. By 2030, Dubai aims to
supply at least 5 per cent of its energy from renewables,
12 per cent from clean coal and 12 per cent from
nuclear power.
• A
bu Dhabi also has ambitious plans for growth with
industrial power and water contracts valued at $6
billion and $5 billion respectively, to be awarded
until 2020. This is part of Abu Dhabi’s 2030 Vision,
a growth strategy expected to see investment exceeding
$100 billion with infrastructure projects, including an
emphasis on renewable energy.
2
Urbanisation
By 2030, more than
90 per cent of the total
population in 9 MENA
countries (including 6
within the GCC) will be
residing in urban areas
