Dearest Community,
Hello. We have a dual purpose in this month’s cover letter. The first is to introduce to you your new Area
Leaders: Roger & Annie Borrello, of Johns Creek and St. Brigid pariah. If you have been around Marriage
Encounter here in Atlanta, you already know the them. They are active
in just about everything in our ME community and headed up the St.
Brigid and Benedict’s WEDS Group, since long before it became
Grateful WEDS. Roger is a Thinker and Annie is an Organizer, which
is a dynamite combination. They have a great daughter, Katie, who is a
sophomore at St. Pius. Roger & Annie are already sinking their teeth
into the job.
We first met Roger & Ann when we presented their original Weekend
and then got to know them well as we worked together on the Inviting
Committee. We remember many meeting in the basement at St. Jude’s.
Little Katie Rose would play in the corner, and she could not have
been better. The Borrellos have always stepped up to more than their
share of the work. Roger works for Bank of America out of a home
office. Annie is a camera buff and a “stay at home mom” although she
is seldom at home, preferring to donate her time and work as a
substitute teacher at Holy Redeemer Catholic School. For more information on the them see The August ESprit, “Spotlight Couple”.
The GA-TN Area Ecclesial Team is filled out by Father Joe
Brando of Marysville, TN, who has been presenting WWME
Weekends since the mid 70’s. Father Joe recently retired as a
Pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Gatlinburg, and he still
writes for the East Tennessee Catholic a monthyl newspaper. He
is a delightful man with a great sense of humor. Very recently,
Father Joe had cancer surgery and we ask you to join us as we
pray for his recovery. Please join us in welcoming both of these
dear Sacraments to their new role as Area Leaders and offer to
help them however you can. Area Leadership for Georgia &
Tennessee is not a symbolic position. It requires hard work and
dedication and the help of many.
The second purpose of this letter is to thank you all for the help
and encouragement that you have given us, especially these last
two years in our second term as leaders of this awesome
community. In addition to our Presenting Team and Community
Team couples, some others deserve special acknowledgement. We thank Bob & Carolyn Kula, who have
handled the Area finances for several years. Consistently we would receive the notice from Section 5 that
financial reports were due - only to notice at the bottom that Atlanta’s had already been received. This
dedication made that sticky area a breeze. Thanks to Jim & Melissa Baugher, who served as registration
couple through most of our term and saw us through the big website changes. Many thanks to our WEDS
mates, Larry & Hermie Balick, who served as Prayer Couple Coordinators for the last four years. They were
1
so efficient that we rarely had to give that area of our ministry a second thought. Throughout that same
period, Mike & Julie Todd have received your Prayer Couples letters and made sure they got to the hotel for
each Weekend. Thank you.
Phil & Aline Bushey have served as Weekend Hotel Hosting Couple for so many years that we have lost
track of when they started. Bill & Carol Louree have handled that same job when Busheys were away very
smoothly. Many thanks. The fact that the Presenting Team couples can show up to present a Weekend and
know that everything is taken care of is a real gift. Mark & Dana Turpin have prepared the layout for the
eSpirit and managed our edits and those of Al & Mary Nelle before us. We really thank them for their gentle
nudges & patience. Thanks to Dirk Quartermont who has reliably handled the Spotlight Feature articles.
Jack & Diane Rogers, we thank you for doing such a lovely job as our first contact with registered couples.
Since we stepped into leadership the first time in 2003, Bob & Joy Lambie continue to distribute inviting
brochures to a variety of parishes, as well as sending out Bulletin announcements. We really appreciate your
continued service. We also want to thank the Leadership couples of our many WEDS groups. We thank you
for years of service and donations. In addition, to these faithful couples we would like to thank other
Community Team couples, who have jumped in and helped us many times over this last year, often with little
advanced warning. Thank you to Angel & Liz Bonet, Mike & Meredith Brinkman and Frank & Andrea
O’Brien. And a special thanks to Michael & Jenn Rodriguez who approached us with the idea of developing
a “Community Team” and then forged their idea into reality. You are special, indeed. A few others of the
Presnting Team couples deserve praise for work above & beyound. Jack & Angel Labate and Paul & Renee
Armstrong have worked hard to establish serieses of Marrage Enrichment at their parishes, and Bob & Joy
Hernandez, who shepered the up-grate of our Website. We appreciate all of you, and many others who
probably should have been listed miss here. We also want to thank all of the smiling faces we see at our
Weekend Sing-outs & Community events. We feel the love of God shining on us with each smile. We truly
love you all. We hope to continue seeing you around because you are such an important part of our lives.
Love, Dave & Ronnie
Dialog Corner
Your Dialogue Haven
We often mention guidelines to help you keep your Dialogue safe. For example: use “I
statements,” focus on your feeling & accept that others are not to blame for your
feeling. But, the place where you do your Verbal Dialoging is important too. Choose a
comfortable, quiet, private place – no phone, TV or Kids. Use this place every day and
aim for the same time of day. Once you have concluded your 10 min. of Verbal
Dialogue, close your books and move to a different place to continue the conversation or problem solve. By
doing this, you keep your Dialogue Haven a safe place.
Dialogue Questions:
What is my favorite feature of Autumn? How do I feel about this?
As we approach Thanksgiving Day, what am I most thankful for this year? How do I feel sharing this with
you?
What quality of yours an I most thankful for? How do I feel sharing this with you?
In what ways do we use the gift of our Couple Power to increase the love in the Kingdom of God? How do I
feel about this?

Community Spotlight Couple
This is a love story about Esteban and Gloria Nolasco who
met in their native Dominican Republic when both were just
teenagers.
Esteban moved to the United States, where he completed
high school and attended Miami Dade and later Southern
Polytechnic in Marietta for Architecture. While studying,
he worked in the food industry and became a wine expert
with a love for fine cuisine. He was the Operations
Manager for Sodexo. Gloria graduated in Marketing and
started a very successful career in Santo Domingo, until she
moved to Atlanta where her life changed 180 degrees.
During 12 long years they were only friends over the phone and
nothing else, eventhough they both felt mutual attraction toward one another. One day during a long and
late phone call, the “shy” Esteban accidently mentioned the word “wedding” and Gloria, being crazy,
assumed that this meant he wanted to marry her.
Two months after Esteban’s “mishap” they were married in the Dominican Republic and a couple of
months later, Gloria moved to Atlanta. That was the beginning of their love story.
Suddenly they became parents without the opportunity to enjoy their lives as newlyweds. When they
celebrated their 2nd anniversary, they already had two precious children, Valerie and Stephen.
It was very challenging for Gloria to learn the new language, take care of her new family and adapt to a
different world; and for Esteban, a shy and quiet man who suddenly had to face a noisy and busy house and
a lot of new family responsibilities.
As many young parents, they focused their daily lives on their children who became the first and only
priority for them. Their marriage was good, they thought. They communicated enough, but it was only an
exchange of basic information. They didn’t argue but they knew they were missing something. They
needed excitement not related to kids. Honestly with the kids’ activities, they had forgotten about each
other, and they thought this was "normal."
Esteban and Gloria said, "we found that missing part when we attended a World Wide Marriage Encounter
weekend in March of 2004. We immediately became part of a Hispanic WEDS group in Gainesville, a long
commute from Marietta, but it was all worth it. After living the weekend, our relationship and
communication became the most important thing. It opened our eyes as to how important our marriage was
and even more important the “Sacrament of Matrimony”. We also became more involved at our Church
with different ministries."
Esteban and Gloria became passionate about WWME. They started serving different roles: prayer couple,
community pillar, always ready to recruit and tell others about the magic the weekend brought to their
marriage. They wrote their presentations in record time, one set per vacation and started serving as a
Presenter Team. In 2007 they were selected as Area Leaders for the Hispanic Community in Georgia.
Valerie and Stephen were happy to share with their new friends they made through the new community.
They juggled between kid’s activities, sports and meetings. They were a happy family on wheels.
Throughout the years, the responsibilities challenged their faith and made them stronger, their dialogues
grew deeper and more transparent. Esteban said, "It seems God remolded me and made me a different
man. I am more aware of my wife’s needs and now I see her as a blessing from God. Even though we
3
have lows and highs we try hard to keep the enthusiasm and use the techniques we learned as often as we
need them. One thing we know for sure is that the hand of Our Loving God has been carrying us through
everything." On Feb. 1, 2013, they were selected as the Hispanic Area Leaders for the 2nd time. At that
moment, both of them having overwhelming jobs, felt drained, but accepted the call knowing that God
was behind that decision. They didn’t imagine what would happen two days later.
Esteban and Gloria explained, "on the early hours of Sunday, our beloved son Stephen, who just turned 19,
died in a car accident. The notice made our hearts stop beating and we felt that nothing could relieve that
pain.......Now we can testify that with the physical death of our son we have experienced the immense and
perfect love of God through the support received from the community, family, friends and especially the
couples and priests of WWME. What a blessing it is to be part of this family! God allows things to happen
for a reason. Keeping us busy and tired on our WWME duties is not a distraction from our grief but a
challenge to believe and hope in the promise our Lord teaches us."
Esteban & Gloria have been parishioners of Transfiguration Catholic Church in Marietta for 16 years,
where Gloria also works as Assistant of the Religious Education Program. Esteban stays busy as UPS
Cafeteria Manager in Alpharetta.
Their daughter Valerie, who has the personality to keep them smiling and constantly on their toes,
describes her parents as: “My parents are an example of the love that I wish to have for myself one day,
more fun, yet just as loving! My parents are both freaks about Marriage Encounter and they seem happy
doing it. My mom is still crazy and fun and my dad is a hard worker and puts that effort into our family
life.”

Red Top 2014 was an awesome celebration of our Community and God’s love for us. The weather
was perfect, the food was delicious and the company was delightful. It is such a blessing to see the same faces
we know and love once again and it is equally enjoyable to meet new families and make new friends. We most
particularly appreciate that the folks who frequent Red Top most often hold close the same values that we do:
honoring God & each other through our Sacrament of Matrimony, and enjoying the beautiful world He gave us.
There is no doubt that God created that inviting park and so many dear couples & children for us to enjoy.
Saturday night and Sunday morning we heard the same point made by several individuals. It went like this, “Too
bad we have to wait until next year to do this again”. Well, guess what, you do not really have to wait until next
October to get a “fix” for the joy you long for. Each January, members of our community gather to celebrate the
Epiphany. This holy day marks the presentation of Jesus to the Gentile world. Those 3 Kings represent us, and it
is only right that we should take note of this important historical moment. It is true that when we gather for The
Epiphany Party in January, we do it at a parish hall rather than at Red Top Mountain State Park with its
shelter & cabins decked in Autumn glory. And it is true we do not feast on Roast Pork or Brunswick Stew and
there is no shared Mass to revel in. But, the Epiphany Party does have a Potluck Dinner which is always
yummy. It has many of the same loving couples and precious children. It has games, songs and crafts for the
children And, the kids even get the chance to dress up and act out the Nativity of our Lord in a pageant play.
True, the Epiphany Party is only a few hours long, rather than a whole weekend, but it is filled with love & joy.
This year so far no couple or WEDS group has stepped forward to host the Epiphany Party 2015, but we have
absolute trust that someone will. It is too special a tradition to let fade away. In the last 12 years, Angel & Liz
Bonet, Shawn & Becky Sartain and couples from St. Ann’s WEDS, Sts. Joe’s & Cathrine’s WEDS and Grateful
WEDS have all added life and flavor to this sweet event as they hosted it. We are sure that they all are a willing
source of ideas and how-to information. If you and/or your group would enjoy hosting the upcoming Epiphany
Party, please contact Roger & Annie Borrello at [email protected] . Thank you.
We love you, Dave & Ronnie
Red Top Mountain is locked in for Oct 23-25th 2015. The prices have increased a little but if you start saving
per day .56 for a 2 bath or .47 for a 1 bath, you will have saved enough money for an exciting opportunity to
stay in a cabin at Red Top. In perspective it is about 1/6 of the cost of your daily Starbucks.
Prayer Corner
As a community we become like family. We have begun a prayer list for the Spirit, so that you can let us
know when you or people you love need prayers. Please send your prayer requests to Mark & Dana Turpin,
at: <[email protected]>
● Please continue to pray for Father Joe Brando, who just had Cancer surgery and must undergo Chemo.
● Please pray for Bob & Nancy Webber and Dan & Maria Eshman,(both of St. Ann’s
WEDS) who are all dealing with difficult illnesses in their families.
● Please pray for Roger & Annie Borrello and Father Joe Brando as they take on the
responsibilities of Area Leaders for all of GA & TN.
● Please pray for (Larry & ) Hermie Balik, who is still living with debilitating pain in her
arm since a car accident last winter which was sever and not their fault.
● Please pray for John & Kathy Bryan who just took on the role of Prayer Couple
Coordinators.

Love Notes
Dear Tom Y Leona, Bill Y Carol and David
Y Debbie,
Thank you all for helping us make the
Archbishop’s Mass for the couples married 50
and 60 years even more special. It was such a
beautiful event and it focused on the Sacrament
of Matrimony, which is just what this ministry
are all about.
Much love,
Dave Y Ronnie
For all the hard working couples of Grateful
WEDS, Happily Ever WEDS, St. Joe’s WEDS,
Happy Hearts WEDS, St. Ann’s WEDS and St.
Monica’s WEDS,
We also want to thank all of you for your work at
Red Top and for stepping forward and signing-up
to handle the responsibilities of those important
functions that make Red Top as special as it is.
We told you if more folks didn’t step up, we’d
have to cancel this long-loved event, because we,
the Sartains and Nichols could not do it alone.
Dear Tom Y Marcia,
We were thrilled week after week as more

We want to thank everyone of you and anyone

2014 a such big success. Even with the curved
ball we were pitched when the Folk’s van was
in an accident, we all adjusted and carried on
with love. What a great Community!!! We
believe Dave M. was right when he said that
this year will go down in history just like the
year we nearly burned down the Fire Pit
Shelter! I’m sure it didn’t hurt the kids & some
adults one bit to have their dessert first! We
look forward to Red Top every year; your
smiling faces and generous hearts are the reason
why. May God bless you all.
With oodles of love,

Dear Village People,

Dear Doug Y Maureen and Liz,
We had such a good time sharing our Red Top
cabin with you. My favorite part was Sat. night.
We had the music pumping, and our voices
singing along as we decorated the cabin and
made yummy treats for the folks who came to
visit. Maureen, you are a Helper with the power
of the Energizer Bunny. Thanks for making
Sunday morning so easy on us.
Tons of love,

their relationship throughout their Weekend is
amazing when you think about it. In this busy
world, such a loving personal touch is indeed
a gift from God. We appreciated your effort
to chase down new Prayer Couples during
Red Top. We love your enthusiasm! We hope
and pray that members of our Community
step forward to provide this service and make
your work run smoothly.
