Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Junior Volleyball Championships Pioneer Stadium: 7-9 November 2014 Team: Patrick Elia (Captain), Earl Baua, Tapu Uliano, Jade Uliano, Joshua Vaifale, Asoono Puni, Taufale (T.J.) Belford, Palaieni Sikaleti, Mika Moemalo-Ulu, Malyche Tafili. Coach: Marty Taylor Assistant Coach & Match Referee: Tovia Fui Manager: Julie Maxwell Assistant Referee: Patrick Elia (Senior) The Championships were played over three days and St Thomas went into the competition as the top seed as they had won the summer sports competition. Our team consisted of a combination of both Year 9 & 10 students. Day One The team took some time to get into stride against their first opponent Shirley Boys’ High School Year 9 but ran out the winners in two sets. In the second game they comfortably beat Burnside High School Year 9. The team had player issues for their match against the formidable Aranui High School team. Key player Asoono Puni sprained his ankle in the first game and would miss the rest of the tournament, captain Patrick Elia was released to the 7’s rugby team in their quest to go to the National Condor 7’s tournament, and Malyche Tafili was on family duty. The result was that the team narrowly lost the third game, two sets to one. Day Two The first match was against Riccarton High School who had won the trophy for the past three years. This was a spectacular game with the players providing a high degree of skill, determination and team work, to crush Riccarton in two sets much to the joy of the players, family, spectators and team management. Patrick Elia was superb on the spike at the net, and Tapu Uliano and Jade Uliano were outstanding on the serve and support play. The last game in pool play saw the team play against a well drilled Christchurch Boys’ High School team. STCC rose to a new level of play and dispatched their opponents in two sets to qualify first in pool play. Day Three The first game of the day was the semi-final against Shirley Boys’ High School and this was a very close encounter. Again, superb team work and skills were displayed by the boys and this saw the match won in two sets. Consistent power serving by T.J. Belford and Malyche Tafili, and well directed smashes at the net by Mika Moemalo-Ulu and Patrick Elia, dominated the blockers set by Shirley Boys. The Final against Burnside High school was epic, filled with drama and passion on the part of our boys. They played superbly as a team, even under pressure, and in front of a large crowd. They fought hard for every point, coming out of the game as winners and Champions of Canterbury. Our previous and only volleyball title was back in 2009. The school Haka at the end left a lasting impression on the spectators. Three players were selected for the tournament team, T.J. Belford, Malyche Tafili and MVP Patrick Elia. Special thanks to Tovia Fui for his assistance over the weekend and for his input into coaching and refereeing requirements. Special thanks also to Patrick Elia for his assistance and Julie Maxwell for her faith and support of the boys. To Earl Baua and Palaieni Sikaleti, a special thank you for your patience and dedication to the team - without a lot of court time, your contribution was immense. A special mention to the boys on your development this year, your maturity, and your high levels of skill and teamwork. This has made coaching very enjoyable and you are a credit to your families and STCC. It is great to have two trophies in the cabinet over the summer.
