11 November 2014 MEDIA RELEASE KHOO TECK PUAT HOSPITAL SETS A FIRST EVER RECORD IN THE SINGAPORE BOOK OF RECORDS FOR THE LONGEST ZUMBATHON Over three hundred staff from Khoo Teck Puat Hospital — managed by Alexandra Health System — did a Zumba dance for two hours and eleven minutes yesterday (10 November 2014) at Yishun Pond, entering the Singapore Book of Records (SBOR) for the longest duration of Zumba dance! This is the second SBOR record that KTPH, as a health promoting hospital, has achieved. In 2012, KTPH entered the SBOR for the largest Gangnam Style dance during its annual Dinner & Dance, with more than 1,300 participants dancing in beat. Yesterday’s Zumbathon was organised as part of the hospital’s annual Active Day. Each year, KTPH staff would do a mass walk or jog in the Yishun neighbourhood during the hospital’s Active Day, as part of their active and healthy lifestyle. As health advocates for the community, such activities also serve as a platform for the hospital’s staff to be visible ambassadors of health and encourage the community to incorporate exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle. Ms Lisa Choo, Organising Chairperson of Zumbathon and a Senior Clinical Psychologist with the Department of Psychological Medicine, said: “Many hospital staff love dancing, especially the Zumba, and there are growing numbers of staff gathering after work to dance in areas around the hospital. So we felt that we should celebrate this year’s Active Day with a team event that challenges our perception of what is possible. We also want to take the opportunity to encourage patients and residents to exercise regularly as part of a healthy lifestyle. The rest is history!” Alexandra Health System (AHS) which manages KTPH recently won the Work-Life Achiever Award, part of the Work-Life Excellence Awards 2014 given by the Tripartite Committee on Work-Life strategy. The regional health system’s commitment to workplace health and staff welfare was also lauded when AHS beat global multi-national corporations to win the inaugural Global Healthy Workplace Award in April 2013.
