A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
The Value of Play
Play is the primary way children learn and is an often underutilized educational
tool. In play, children use all the “tools” they have at the ready – their hands, feet,
minds, family, friends, objects, and the world outside their doorstep. Play is the
heart of a healthy mind, body and soul.

All too often we (the adults) don’t encourage play as children get older. In early
childhood, parents encourage play with toys, with objects, with space, and with
time. However as children age, we often start to discourage active play and insert
inactive play (like video games). My assertion is that we should be encouraging
our students to get outside and explore the world around them. Play takes many
forms but ultimately, play is learning. Through play, children’s cognitive skills are
enhanced, children’s motor skills are developed, children’s language skills are
enhanced and children’s social and emotional skills are gained.
So encourage your child to play more and become an active learner through play.
As a parent you can encourage active play by:

Allowing time for free play (not an assigned activity)

April 28 & 29
District Public Speaking Finals @
Yale Secondary
Respect that your child is unique and encourage them finding their own
style of play

April 30
Jeans Day!!
Allow plenty of room for safe exploration (set boundaries outside – you
can play in this “zone”).

Provide a variety of play materials (like a bike)

Ask about the things you child does while playing (their likes, dislikes,
interests, feelings)

Join your child in their play (get “down” to their level, go outside on a hike,
a ride...)

Teach safety first to reduce injury during play

Play is an often undervalued tool of learning and all too often as children get older
we don’t encourage play in the same way or form that we (parents) did for our
younger children. Encourage your child to actively play more. Then go explore,
imagine, create and discover.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Linda Pollastretti
Acting Principal

WHO IS THAT STAFF MEMBER?
I am Jennifer Aitken. I have been an EA at ATMS for 7 years. I am a proud mother of three
amazing children. I grew up in Ontario and moved out to BC twenty four years ago. I lived in
Mexico for a year, tutoring children grades eight and ten. I struggled with learning until I
reached high school. This, along with my year in Mexico, solidified my desire to pursue a
career helping students, and I have been an Educational Assistant for twenty years this
month. In addition to working in the district, I also tutor children with learning disabilities. I
enjoy painting, reading, hiking, biking, camping, water activities, skating, tobogganing or
building huge sand castles, and strolling along the ocean.
