Dr. Stuart Slorach worked for the Swedish National Food Administration for over
30 years, initially as Associate Professor of Toxicology, then Head of the Food
Research Department and from 1991-2005 as Deputy Director-General.
He was Chair of the Management Board of the European Food Safety Authority
from 2002-2006 and Chairperson of the Codex Alimentarius Commission from
2003-2005.
He has been a member of the OIE Animal Production Food Safety Working Group
since 2004 and its Chair since 2005.
Dr. Slorach chaired the enquiry set up by the Norwegian Government into the
handling of the outbreak of food poisoning caused by Escherichia coli O103:H25 in
2006.
He was a member of the Steering Panel of the UK Government Office for Science’s
2008 Review of the UK Food Standards Agency.
In 2008, he carried out an enquiry into the New Zealand Food Safety Authority’s
risk management framework.
He is currently involved in projects aimed at improving food safety and food
legislation in developing countries in different parts of the world.
Prof. Steve Hathaway
Prof.
Steve Hathaway is the Director of Science and Risk Assessment, Regulation and
Assurance Branch of the Ministry for Primary Industries, New Zealand.
Prof. Hathaway has had a long involvement on food safety operational research and
risk analysis at both the international and national level, and has participated in the
scientific work of FAO/WHO, Codex and OIE for many years. During this time, he has
had a particular focus on development and implementation of risk-based approaches to
meat hygiene.
He is the Chair of the Codex Committee on Milk and Milk Products (CCMMP). He is
also the New Zealand delegate to the Codex Committee on Food Hygiene (CCFH) and
currently is the co-lead of the working group on controls for Trichinella spp. and Taenia
saginata/ Cysticercus bovis.

Dr. Hirofumi Kugita





Dr. Hirofumi Kugita formerly worked as a Chief Veterinary Officer and Director of
Animal Health and Animal Products Safety Division of Ministry of Agriculture,
Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) of Japan.
He served as OIE Delegate of Japan from 2004 to 2006.
After graduating the Tokyo University, he joined the Ministry and worked for more
than 30 years, engaging with various policy making and implementation, including
animal production and trade, international cooperation through FAO or JICA
(Japan International Cooperation Agency).
From 1st April 2013, Dr. Hirofumi Kugita has been appointed as the Regional
Representative for the OIE Regional Representation for Asia and the Pacific.
