Dear Alumni and Friends of St. Mary’s:
Consider the experiences that shaped who we are today. For those of us who attended
this very special Catholic high school in downtown Lynn, there is probably nothing,
outside of our families, that has had more of an influence on us. St. Mary’s prepares
students for life. A St. Mary’s education instills values, encourages spiritual and
intellectual growth and fosters lifelong friendships.
Many feel a great debt to St. Mary’s. The demonstrated commitment of alumni and
friends is reflected in this 2008 Giving Report. This philanthropic support ensures a
bright future for our school.
Please feel welcome to visit St. Mary’s any time. You will see students thriving in a
Catholic, Christian environment that values inspiration, participation, respect and
diversity. These values form the foundation of academic achievement and human
development.
I’d like to share what has been happening at St. Mary’s in the past year.
1
“The success
St. Mary’s enjoys
today is the result of
your support, along with
thousands of alumni,
parents, grandparents,
faculty, staff, and friends,
who have made
St. Mary’s a priority. ”
• Our students are accepted to some of the finest colleges and universities in the country,
including: Harvard, Yale, Brown, Cornell, University of Pennsylvania, Boston College,
Notre Dame, Holy Cross, Boston University, Providence College, U.S. Air Force Academy,
and Bryn Mawr College.
• Caroline Carrns ’09 is the first Advanced Placement Scholar in St. Mary’s history,
demonstrating excellence in three AP subjects during her junior year. Caroline will attend
Yale in the fall.
• We are blessed with a talented faculty and staff who are deeply committed to academic
excellence and creating a learning environment that encourages students to achieve to their
highest potential.
• Our drama program continues to grow in talent and student participation. Last year’s
spring musical, “The Wizard of Oz,” broke attendance records, and the drama festival play,
“The Eleventh,” an interwoven collection of personal reflections from September 11, won
several awards at this year’s Massachusetts High School Drama Festival.
• St. Mary’s Campus Ministry has engaged our student body through its spiritual
development programs, such as PB&J (Prayer, Bible and Jesus), a lunchtime discussion
group that allows students to openly talk about their faith, and numerous opportunities
for Christian service, including serving food to Boston’s homeless and volunteering at My
Brother’s Table and Bridge House, Lynn organizations committed to alleviating hunger
and homelessness.
2
• Our athletic teams continue to excel. Since the beginning of the 2007-2008 school
year, our teams have won Catholic Central League championships in girls hockey,
softball and boys golf. Twelve of thirteen teams have qualified for MIAA postseason
play in 2008-2009. Five student-athletes have been recognized as All-Scholastics by the
Boston Globe and Boston Herald.
• In particular, our girls hockey team continues to excel both on the ice and in the
classroom. The Lady Spartans recently won their second consecutive Division I State
championship, and, as a team, have a collective grade average of 90.4.
The success St. Mary’s enjoys today is the result of your support, along with thousands
of alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff and friends who have made St. Mary’s
a priority. That support has never been more important, or more necessary, than it is
today. The challenges, as well as the opportunities, remain great. We are grateful for
your continued commitment to the pursuit of excellence in the classroom, on the field,
on the stage, and as human beings.
Please enjoy reading the 2008 Giving Report. Thank you for your continued, loyal
support of our beloved St. Mary’s.
Dr. Raymond A. Bastarache ’65
Head of School

From the pastor
Dear Alumni and Friends of St. Mary’s:
This Giving Report on all the support that St. Mary’s High School received in 2008 is a
tribute to the dedication and loyalty of so many graduates and friends of our beloved
school.
People often ask how it is possible to keep tuition so low in comparison to our peer
schools, yet still be able to send our graduates to the top-tier colleges in the nation.
The answer is simple: It is due to the generosity and thoughtfulness of all the people
who are reading this report and who understand how important it is to keep education
affordable in Lynn today. “Thank you” doesn’t seem to begin to express the gratitude
that we at St. Mary’s feel toward all of you.
It is no secret that running a junior/senior high school such as St. Mary’s is like running
a small college. This means that we need to have an Advancement Office and dedicated
professional staff who understand that the least important thing in fundraising is raising
money. The most important thing is telling the story. At St. Mary’s, we are blessed with
an Advancement Office staff of people who do an outstanding job of reaching out to
graduates with the compelling story of why supporting St. Mary’s is so important.
This year’s graduates will be going to some of our country’s finest colleges and
universities. High schools that have tuition costs two and three times more than St.
Mary’s can be envious of the successes our students are achieving. Our students are
getting some very generous financial packages to attend these premier colleges. This is
a reflection of their need, and underscores the importance of keeping tuition low at St.
Mary’s. Because of our generous supporters, we are able to give very deserving students
4
the kind of education that enables them to compete successfully with students with much
higher family incomes. What a great gift a St. Mary’s education is today!
As this Giving Report indicates, restricted gifts to our Annual Fund for 2008 were up
substantially. These gifts target special programs and allow donors to be quite specific as
to how their gifts are to be used. Many of these gifts have gone directly to help specific
students with some critically necessary financial aid. Unrestricted Annual Fund gifts were
also up and this money effectively helps us to make up the difference between what we
charge for tuition and what it costs us to educate a student. These funds are vital for our
survival today.
In 2008 we also received more than $100,000 as people continue to pay off their pledges
from the Ours Is To Build capital campaign. With the income from our golf tournaments
and a few endowed gifts, our total giving for 2008 was a little over $750,000. This is truly
an amazing number and a great harbinger of things to come.
Everyone who has helped to make this number possible deserves a great pat on the back
for a job well done. Thank you very much, and may 2009 bring us even greater success.
Rev. Monsignor Paul V. Garrity

From the Director of
Institutional Advancement
With yet another exceptional year of support behind us, I would like to extend my
personal thanks to the many alumni, parents, and friends who have made it possible.
Your generosity clearly expresses your confidence in St. Mary’s today and your hopes
for the future. The continuing heartfelt pride and passion of the St. Mary’s community
is truly inspiring.
I also want to acknowledge Head of School Dr. Ray Bastarache ’65 and Principal Carl
DiMaiti, as well as our dedicated faculty and staff for their ongoing efforts to ensure
that St. Mary’s remains a school of choice on the North Shore. There is a very positive
buzz about St. Mary’s that is heard in conversations throughout the area.
In particular, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the members of the
St. Mary’s Board of Trustees, especially Chair Tony DiCroce ’67, Vice Chair Joan
Luise Hill ’71, Institutional Advancement Committee Co-Chairs Walter Gallo ’54 and
Jim Greeley ’67, as well as 2015 Vision Strategic Plan Co-Chair Jack King ’66. Without
the vision, leadership, and commitment provided by these key individuals, we could
not have attained many of the remarkable achievements noted in this Giving Report.
Most of all, I would like to thank the nearly 2,000 alumni, parents (both past and
present), friends and business people, whose thoughtful generosity continues to make
such a difference to our students – the young men and women who benefit so
significantly from that financial and volunteer support.

You will see in this report how the Annual Fund continues to grow significantly.
Through your support, you are helping to offset the school’s significant operational
costs, as well as creating and building scholarship funds and much needed tuition
assistance for many deserving students. You also provide the teaching materials,
equipment and technology that our faculty and staff need to continue to offer the
quality of education for which St. Mary’s has become renowned.
We are also grateful to those graduates and friends who have initiated endowed
scholarship funds. These endowed funds, often named in honor of family members, teachers, coaches or friends will exist in perpetuity with the earnings from
the funds benefiting untold students, who might otherwise not be able to afford to
attend or achieve a St. Mary’s education.
I would also like to recognize the generous annual support of the members of our
Richard Cardinal Cushing Society whose 2008 membership in this leadership
giving group is listed in this report. Their thoughtful generosity and caring
philanthropic leadership is vital to our success. In that same vein, we continue
to be touched by many forward-thinking alumni and friends who remember St.
Mary’s, as well as their families, in their long-range plans through wills, charitable
trusts, insurance plans, or other estate planning tools. They are recognized through
membership in our Monsignor John Dillon Day Heritage Society.
On behalf of all of our students, who benefit most directly from your support, I
am pleased to extend our sincere appreciation for your commitment and friendship
to St. Mary’s.
Sincerely,
Michael T. MacNeil
Director of Institutional Advancement

Giving to St. Mary’s
When you make a gift to the St. Mary’s, you have flexibility in determining how the funds will be used,
as well as many options for making your gift.
Unrestricted gifts are among the most valuable to St. Mary’s because they allow the school to allocate
funds wherever the need is greatest, and to take advantage of unique opportunities as they arise. Your
unrestricted contribution may be used to support costs associated with financial aid, innovations in
teaching, teaching tools and equipment, facilities, and much more.
Directed gifts allow you to designate your gift to a specific program, or a priority area at St. Mary’s.
When you make a directed gift to St. Mary’s, you enjoy the satisfaction of knowing you are supporting
a program that is personally meaningful to you. You also have the option of designating your gift for
current use or for endowment.
Types of gifts
Outright Gifts
When you make an outright gift to St. Mary’s, your contribution can be put to work immediately —
either providing funding for current programs or creating a reliable source of future income by
expanding the school’s endowment. An outright gift may be composed of almost any asset of value:
Cash gifts — the simplest and easiest gifts you can make — can be made through credit/
debit card transactions, outright cash, or personal checks, cashier’s checks, or money
orders made payable to St. Mary’s High School. You can make your gift online with Visa, MasterCard, or American Express by visiting our website, www.smhlynn.org.
Gifts of appreciated securities, stocks, and bonds also provide considerable tax advantages when transferred to St. Mary’s before they are sold. If you have held your securities for more than one year, you may find that your gift will provide a two-fold tax benefit, creating an income-tax deduction, as well as helping avoid capital gains taxes that might have been due on their sale.
Gifts of real estate — including personal residences, second homes, income property, and vacant land — offer a wide variety of tax and other benefits.
Gifts of personal property — including rare books, works of art, valuable collectibles, and tangible items of demonstrable value — in some cases may enable you to make a
significant gift to support St. Mary’s with outstanding tax benefits to you.
Planned Gifts
To learn about deferred or planned gifts, including bequests, life-income plans, and other options for
your estate — and for information about increasing your income, earning valuable income-tax
deductions, and reducing your estate taxes — please contact Michael MacNeil, Director of Institutional
Advancement, at 781-599-0696.
Matching-Gift Programs
An easy way to double or even triple your donation to St. Mary’s is to find out if your company has a
matching-gift program. Such programs typically match all or a percentage of employee contributions
to charitable organizations, making the employer a partner in employees’ personal philanthropy. Simply
obtain a matching-gift form from your employer’s personnel office, fill it out, and provide it to
St. Mary’s with your contribution.
Gift Pledges
St. Mary’s welcomes your gift through a pledge — a formal statement of intention to make a gift to the
school. With a pledge, you may complete your gift by making regular payments over time.
