ANOINTING OF THE SICK
Please call the rectory at any time for the Sacrament of the
Sick. Also the Holy Eucharist will be brought to the sick and
shut-ins upon request to the Parish Office.
We celebrate a Communal Anointing of the Sick in June, near
the Feast of St. John the Baptist.
BAPTISMAL
The Sacrament of Baptism is administered on the fourth
Sunday of every month at 11:30 a.m. Parents are encouraged to
invite family members to the 10:30 Mass as the Sacrament of
Baptism takes place immediately following the Mass. Parents
and Godparents meet for an enrichment class prior to the
Baptism.
You will need to call the Parish Office to register for this class.
A Godparent must be a committed, practicing Catholic, and if
from another parish, must have a certificate of eligibility from
his/her pastor. This certificate should be brought to the
enrichment class. A Christian of other denominations may
serve as a Godparent along with a practicing Catholic.

This is an opportunity to become acquainted with
our faith community and to experience the joy of
being part of the Church. Only registered parishioners
in good standing can receive Certificates of Eligibility
to act as Godparent or Sponsor.

Couples planning marriage are expected to attend Pre-Cana
conferences and to meet with the parish priest several times.
Ordinarily the period of preparation requires a minimum of

sincere decision to follow Christ’s plan for our talents, and
be a light in the darkness.
The ratings prove that TV viewers like watching shows like
“The Voice” and “America’s Got Talent.” For me and
others “of a certain age” who can recall TV’s pioneer days,
there was once a weekly program that could count as great
grandfather to these modern offerings. It was known as
“Ted Mack’s Original Amateur Hour.” I smile as I recall
the avuncular host Ted Mack interviewing the guest talents
as if it were yesterday. One person came on the show and
announced to Mr. Mack that he played the handsaw.
“Really?” asked the host. Then we would all watch and
listen as the man used a violin bow to produce a pleasant if
not haunting sound from his saw. That early TV show not
only showcased people’s talents, but exemplifies the
innocence of a bygone era in entertainment that I wish we
could bring back.
Once upon a time, a little boy attended a church that had
beautiful stained glass windows. He was told that the
windows contained pictures of Saint Matthew, Saint Mark,
Saint Luke, Saint John, Saint Paul and others. One day
somebody asked the boy “What is a saint?” And he
answered so wisely and well: “A saint is a person whom the
light shines through.”
Returning to this matter of talent, we have to remember and
celebrate the fact that God in His love has given each and
every one of us an ability or aptitude that no one else has.
Jesus reminds us today that God expects us to use that
special something to benefit others. All of us are traveling
on this relatively little blue ball floating in the universe amid
the stars enroute to a heaven beyond our powers of
imagination. Each individual is charged with making the
journey better for the rest of us.
We know that some of us are able to do that for millions of
others through the so-called “magic” of our inventions.
Recall the many tributes given recently to Robin Williams
and Joan Rivers. Of course, we don’t have to reach millions.
We are successful in God’s eyes if we reach but one other.
Our belief in Jesus empowers us for this project. So we
need not fear or be daunted by the challenge of it.
However, there is a “downside” if you will to all this happy
talk of our individual gifts. It is captured in the sad phrase
“could have been.” We are not talking here about some
human prize lost. But just put your name in front of “could
have been” and the words “a saint” behind that verb and see
the potential for a bitter eternity.
Luckily for us all, that sentence does not have to describe
us. We are blest to have the time and place right here and
now to change “could have been” to “became” with a

Why did Jesus tell this story? Most
importantly it tells us something about how
God deals with us, his servants. ? The Lord entrusts the
subjects of his kingdom with gifts and graces and he gives his
subjects the freedom to use them as they think best. With each
gift and talent, God gives sufficient the means (grace and
wisdom) for using them in a fitting way. As the parable of the
talents shows, God abhors indifference and an attitude that
says it's not worth trying. God honors those who use their
talents and gifts for doing good. Those who are faithful with
even a little are entrusted with more! But those who neglect or
squander what God has entrusted to them will lose what they
have. There is an important lesson here for us. No one can
stand still for long in the Christian life. We either get more or
we lose what we have. We either advance towards God or we
slip back.

younger generation could benefit from? Can you teach about
the Great Books, Greek, computers, engineering, sciences or

Diabetes Month
Diabetes is the leading
cause of disability and
death in the United

cholesterol level checked; making healthy dietary choices; and
increasing overall physical activity.
Everyone should be tested for diabetes starting at age 45 or
sooner if you have a family history. The earlier diabetes is
detected and treated, the less risk of serious health problems.

project in the front of the church. This long term project is
a labor of love, accomplished by volunteers and fully
funded through donations from generous parishioners
and the Knights, along with profits from NGGC
fundraisers. Please consider supporting the continued
beautification of the church campus by making a purchase

Celebrate Christmas with the Seminarians
Christmas Open House and Concert
December 7, 2014
Tours begin at 1pm / Concert begins at 7pm
This year, Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary is combining
its annual Open House and Christmas
Concert events. Tours of the Seminary begin at 1 pm with
the last tour beginning at 3 pm.
Seminarians will guide visitors through the historic
buildings to view sacred art, common areas
and Christmas crèches on display in the Ryan Memorial
Library featuring dozens of Nativity
scenes from around the world. Refreshments are
provided after the tours.
The Christmas concert begins at 7 pm and will feature the
musicians and choir of Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.

parish will reflect on one chapter from this catechism.

November 2014: Chapter 1: Created For Joy
“Love is Our Mission” because love is our origin and destiny.
Created in the image of God, a human being is created for
communion, which means that loving God and neighbor is the
reason for our existence.
When we follow Jesus, body and soul, even when it hurts and
requires sacrifice, we are living lives of integrity for only in living
this way will our lives coincide with the reason for our
existence. This brings us great joy.
We sin and stumble, but the God we meet in Christ is faithful
even when we are not. God’s forgiveness is a gift that gives us
back to ourselves, enabling us to embrace our mission and
destiny anew. Catholic sacraments and moral teachings serve
this destiny. The sacraments are a genuine encounter with
Christ, while the moral teachings show what Christ-like love
looks like in particular situations. Catholic life summons us to
heroism and adventure even in ordinary daily life. The world is
charged with the beauty and grace of God, and neighbors who
need our love and kindness are all around us.
Did you know? The World Meeting of Families event was
established by Pope St. John Paul II in 1994. It is held every
three years in cities across the world. 2015 is the first time it
will be in the United States. Its goals are (1) to strengthen family
bonds and (2) to give witness to the fundamental role of the
family in society.
