Jerry Hoffman Published monthly by Za-Ga-Zig Shrine Center 1100 Shriners Parkway Altoona, Iowa 5009-2117 Members please send change of address to the Shrine Temple as soon as you know your new domicile. It’s November and I’m sure you are ready for it. You just can’t beat the fall weather in Iowa and I love college football season. I truly hope you are all excited for a great Fall Ceremonial planned for the 15th of this month. We are going to honor Past Potentate Robert “Bob” Parker. I’m sure it’s going to be a wonderful day at the Temple. Get your petitions turned in right away and let’s have a great time. Membership is so important to the success of our Temple and our mission as Shriners. We must always be looking for that good Mason we can make a great Shriner. Do the right thing Nobles and help build the fraternity we all enjoy. With the Holiday season heading our way things will continue as busy as before but with a little more spirit. I sure hope your fall and winter schedules workout as planned and everyone enjoys a super end of the year. My plans are made, I hope yours are too. During the month of November at the Temple you can catch these great events, I hope to see many of you this year attend the Service on the 9th we have for the Brothers we’ve lost to the black camel during the last 12 months. All past widows are welcome and encouraged as well to attend. Please come out and show your support for the fallen Nobles. Our regular monthly Nobles meeting set for the 13th, during that meeting after dinner we will accept and receive any Unit and Club donations to the different fund accounts we support. It should be a fun night and I hope you all plan to attend. Dinner will be at 6 p.m. and the meeting will get started at 7p.m. Nobles I want to draw special attention to the scheduled “Ladies Night” on the 21st. It’s going to be the finest dinner we’ve had at the Temple all year. It’s going to have all the extra’s every Lady would enjoy. Nobles it’s going to be the special night where we say, “Thank You, Shrine Ladies” for all your energy, efforts and talents during this calendar year. Don’t miss this event. It promises to be the best it can be. That evening Nobles, leave your fez at home but we ask that you wear a dinner jacket. You must RSVP the Shrine Office, the cost will be $20 for the Nobles dinner ticket, the Ladies attend for free.... See details in this issue. Let me drop back into October for just a minute and thank the several people who made the events a blast. Everyone that help with the Halloween Party on the 31st, Thank You! Your efforts to make that a great event didn’t go un-noticed. Super Job! The Circus Kick Off on the 7th was another success and it only shows our biggest event is in good hands. We have a committee well on their way to make the 2015 event another great one. But with that event, we need every Noble to step up and do their part. If you can work a show, do that. If you can sell an ad and or an extra block of tickets, super do that as well. But most of all when your tickets come in the mail, BUY THEM! We make it a requirement with the Tin Lizzies and other Unit and Clubs do too. Every Noble should be paying for their tickets. Nobles the Raffle ticket deadline is fast approaching and we need as many tickets sold as possible. We only printed 1000 tickets, so the odds are very favorable for the winner. It should be an easy sale. Again if you don’t buy one for yourself, sell one to a friend. If everyone does their part Za-Ga-Zig wins! You don’t have to be present to win and we will extend the marketing of the campaign to the fullest. But if we leave tickets unsold, we have not done all we can for the Temple. Nobles, have wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday spending time with the ones you love. May God bless you all, Fraternally yours, Postmaster: Send Form 3579 to: 1100 Shriners Parkway Altoona, Iowa 50009-2117 Opinions expressed in articles are not necessarily those of the Editor, office staff and/or Publisher. Both son-in-laws, Jody and Kevin, are members of Za-Ga-Zig Shrine. Both Bob and Mary’s family have a rich history within the Masonic Fraternity. Bob’s father, Harold, was a member of the Flying Fez Unit, his mother was a Past Queen of the Daughters of the Nile. Mary Mae’s father was a member of the Nomad Unit and founder of the Calliope Unit, while her mother is a past Worthy Matron. Mary Mae was a member of the Rainbow Girls and later went on to serve as Worthy Matron in 1983. Bob’s Masonic journey goes way back and starts with his time in the DeMolay. Bob was raised in May of 1958 at Gnemith Lodge #577 in West Des Moines and received his 50 year certificate in 2008 from the Grand Lodge of Iowa. I’m very pleased to have Past Potentate Robert “Bob” Parker as the 2014 Fall Ceremonial Honoree. I can’t think of a more deserving Noble. Bob’s history with our fraternity goes back a long way and as some of you get to know Bob this month you will understand why I feel the way I do. Let me start with the early years, Bob Parker was born in 1933 and raised in West Des Moines. He graduated from Valley High School Class of 1952, went on to Drake University where he was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. In 1956 Bob joined the Army and served in the 82nd Air-born Division and made many jumps. When that call to duty was over he found his way back to Wes Des Moines and went into business for himself owning and operating one single service station. That single service station grew and turned into Parker Oil Company, one of the largest in this area. Bob stayed busy while working his career serving on many different boards and civic organizations. Bob was President of the Jaycee in 1964, Chamber of Commerce in West Des Moines in 1965. Bob received the Junior Chamber “Distinguished Service Award” and was appointed by the mayor of West Des Moines to serve on the Civil Service Committee in 1969. Bob continues to serve on the executive board of Iowa Business Growth. With all that you might wonder how Bob made time for his family and his Masonic journey, but he did. Bob and Mary Mae have been married for 55 years and have two daughters, Bobette and Courtney, four grandchildren He joined the Des Moines Consistory in 1958, and crossed the hot sands of Za-GaZig in November of 1958. Bob was a member of the Nomad Motor-Scooter Unit at Za-Ga-Zig Shrine. Bob was elected and served as Potentate of Za-Ga-Zig in 1975. In 1975 Za-Ga-Zig had 7200 members and 38 Units. Things were busy to say the least. Bob served on the building committee for what is now our Shrine Building. Bob is also a proud Past Director of ROJ, Court #46 here in Des Moines. A few special notes about 1975 that I’m sure Bob is proud to be a part of, Imperial Session was in Toronto, Canada that year and ALL the Units attended the event. Also in 1975 Bob had 3 Ceremonials and initiated 223 candidates. Jim Hunt, 2014 Potentate OFFICIAL NOTICE Za-Ga-Zig Shrine Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. News From The Nobelles By Beverly Beck The Nobelles met on October 4th at Fire Creek for lunch. Mary Lucy said grace before lunch. After lunch Connie Coy-Walker introduced Lois Owen to the group. Ms. Owen is a member of the Red Hat Ladies. She had a collection of Red Hats and told us all about them. They ranged in style from the large Edwardian hats to the small head band with a vail. Madalene Lane reminded everyone about the Ambassadors Spaghetti Dinner, the Ladies Auxiliary’s Chicken Noodle Dinner and the Ladies Fall Trip. In November on the 6th the Nobelles will meet at Mezzodi’s, 4519 Fleur Drive at 12:30 p.m. Our December (Christmas) luncheon will be December 4th at the Urbandale Country Club. The season is coming to a close, but we have not put the Limo away, yet. Let us know about any other parades including Holiday parades. We will make it happen if at all possible. Last month we were there as most of you in the Marshalltown parade. MAN, I don’t know how many people came out to see a parade, but there were a lot....at least 10,000!!! OF course, our ventures to recruit more members took us to several more stops along the way home. It is not just a parade day, it has become a day to let everyone know about Shriners. We want to send out a BIG Thank You to all who enjoyed our Annual All You Can Eat Spaghetti Dinner. We enjoy this event each year and hope you continue to stop by and support us as we do yours. Looking forward to this month and the Fall Ceremonial,. Halloween party for the kids and most important the Widow’s Luncheon on the 9th. News from the ball field, games are over for the year, we enjoyed not only playing in the coed City league, but more important, seeing all the fans from the Shrine there to support us. Without the fans and family there to show support, we would be very sad. Just as the MLB continues to strive, those fans pay for seats to support their favorite team. BUT, you can continue to watch us for the mere price of $ nothing. Each year we host 2 Omelet breakfasts to raise money for our team supplies of regulation balls, bats, entry fees, and uniforms. Thanks to everyone who came out and enjoyed our Omelets and all the trimmings. Our last event on the 12th of October was bigger than the last and it looks to grow each time. Our Chief cook, Tom Robbins, P.P. has again added more of the items to the need list as we seem to have run out of some side dishes. Don’t be disappointed if you came late and we were out of something. We will strive to make this the best we can. We did keep up with the eggs as fast as the chickens could lay them. If it wasn’t for the extra help that ‘just shows up’, we could not make this happen. Thanks to you all. As we did NOT make the October World Series, our meetings will go dark till March. We will continue to talk the game, keep our bats warm and swing to shape. Always looking for any interested member and his Lady to join in the fun we have each season. Just give one of our members a call and we will get you signed up now, or until deadline approaches. Spring training camp will be here before you know it. Our new president for 2015 is Mike Williams and his ability to play ball along with love of the Shrine will make him a great leader. So, if you wish to get on the list, call Mike Williams at 822-3042, Craig Vander Zyl at 577-1752 or the coach if need be, but remember the coach is the last one to be bothered and is a very busy man. Rick Corbin, 720-5640. From what I’ve heard everyone enjoyed the dinner. There are a lot of ladies I need to thank. They all came out ready to work and they all did a wonderful job. A very big Thank You goes out to Guy Freeman, Mike Des Planque and Tom Marlin. Theses guys worked in the kitchen, lifting heavy pans, doing dishes and just about everything we asked them to do, with very little complaining, HA! We had two guys that were not in the picture, but had a lot to do with us having supplies ready to go that night. Thank you Johnny Audette and Doug Miller. We gave them a list and our worries were over. But most of all a very big Thank You to the people who came out to our dinner. We can’t do anything without the people who support our dinners. With your support we are able to help the hospital supply our kids with the things they need. So again, Thank You Everyone!!! photos by the Public Relations Unit In Memorium Black Camel (with dates of initiation) Za-G a-Zig Shr ine T emple Za-Ga-Zig Shrine Temple Ladies Appreciation Night Ladies Auxilary and Ladies Group Awards/Donations to be presented at this time. They enjoyed three days of shows, sightseeing, travel and fun. The Tour Coordinators, President Jay Ochanpaugh and Christie, kept the miles from getting long with an entertaining patter of questions and answers. Among the Mobile Nobles were a number of wedding anniversary celebrants: Vic and Anita Van Horn, 61 years; Bob and Marilyn Kremers, 64 years; Cleon and Jean Babcock, 65 years; Mel and Ruth Shimp, 66 years; Roy and Dorothy Boyd, 68 years. The couple with the greatest number of years was Vernon and Dee Hintz, 70 years. Among the shows the group enjoyed were the Dixie Stampede and the Brett Family Show. After all that riding they enjoyed some free time for strolling along the four block long Branson Days Flea Market down by the lake front. From there they boarded the Princess Royal for a leisurely formal dinner and a seven mile cruise on the lake. They returned to Des Moines late Saturday evening – very pleased, very Tired, yet very ready to go again! NOBLES Don’t forget your Blue Lodge. Attend as often as you can. Remember, it’s where the journey began. Find a Good Mason, we can make a Great Shriner.
