How to Teach Speaking: What is it that learners need to know, and what do they need to be able to do with that knowledge, in order to achieve spoken fluency? Through the
analysis of an example or two of learner language, I hope to show that the knowledge base for speech is relatively simple; the challenge is in activating it. In this session I'll
present a three-step model for developing the skill, while also attempting to show that the benefits that accrue extend beyond fluency itself.
