MICHIGAN STATE MUZZLELOADING
ASSOCIATION
NEWS LETTER
NOV/DEC 2014
THE PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
With the up and coming Deer season coming
upon us we (Deer Hunters) are all looking for
new and sure fire ways to attract deer for
harvesting. While in my bus in the mornings,
doing my run, I am seeing a hell of a lot more
deer than I see in a full day of hunting. So, I
think the solution to seeing more deer in the
woods, would be to set up a blind disguised as
a school bus.
Turkey shoots around the State are in full
swing. Check the State shoot flyer for turkey
shoot doin’s in the state. I was at Columbiaville,
in October, to check out things and put the
word out concerning the State Shoot coming to
Columbiaville for the next three years. There
were a lot of shooters there and I believe we
will see some faces we haven’t seen at the
State Shoot before.
I will be putting together a flyer, for
distribution, announcing the state shoot in
2015. They will be available at the state
meeting held at Eaton Rapids in February. Do
not forget about our annual business meeting,
February 7, 2015. All MSMLA members are
welcome as well as all Michigan Black Powder
Clubs are allowed one voting member.
Flintlock shooters it is a very dangerous for
you and others around you if you are not
properly putting your priming horn or flask
away after you have primed your flintlock
pan. Many accidents and serious injuries have
happened because it was just laid down or not
put away with the spout up. We all know that
if a spark can get into the spout it will and a
spark in the priming horn has the potential of
a small bomb and cause serious injury. On
another safety note for flintlock shooters if
you are shooting bench or cross-sticks it is
mandatory that you put a flash shield up, on
the lock side of your gun, before you do any
shooting.
Offhand
shooters
have
a
responsibility to say “FLINT” prior to them
firing their flintlocks. This protects other
shooters from injury of burning powder from
the pan or shards from broken flints. I know
the above paragraph has been seen before,
but it is a big safety concern for percussion
shooters
A big “THANK YOU” to Russ and Marcie
Anderson, once again, for donating their
previous years of medals back to the
association for recycling. They have saved the
Association considerable amount of money.
Thanks Russ and Marcie.

hopefully correct this time.

NOMINATION BALLOT
SKUNK ODER RECIPE
I've given the skunk odor recipe to
people at shoots recently. So many
have dogs who've been
sprayed. Also, it works good for
other smells, on dogs or not. It's
cheap, easy and pooch is fresh
smelling when done. LOL
Each Year a Michigan resident that has
displayed the values that Roy Keeler Lived by
will be selected to enter into this Society.
Friendship, Sportsmanship, and
promoting the black powder shooting
sports in the state of Michigan are
primary factors in the selection.
I nominate,
to be considered for this prestigious
award.
SKUNK ODOR REMEDY
1 ounce hydrogen peroxide
1 qt. water
1/4 cup baking soda
1 T. liquid pet shampoo or soap
Mix thoroughly. Spray on pet,
avoiding the eyes, ears and
mouth. Wet a washcloth to apply to
face. Wait 5 minutes, then bathe in
warm water with pet shampoo.
Personally, I don't measure. I dump
in the ingredients, sponge on and
wash off. I use this recipe for other
things besides dogs, which we no
longer have.
Til next time, Marcie and Russ
Anderson
I have known this individual for
years. The main reason that I feel this person
should be considered is:

I cashed in all 14 preference points for this
year’s black bear drawing. My last hunt in
'99 was successful in the Gwinn game
management unit with my good friend
Doug Evert helping me retrieve the animal.
He now was going to be my guide on this
bear hunt in much the same area as back
in the 90's when I was guiding for bears. I
harvested a REAL NICE black bear on the
third evening from a tree stand using my
Kodiak .58 cal.double rifle at 30 yards. It
took quite some effort, but four old men
managed to get this large bear out of the
woods and back to our camp. The bear
was into 300 plus pounds live weight, and
about 275 lbs. field dressed.
The patch knife around my neck was made
by Ken Graves and won at the Linden
Firesticks Club fun shoot in June this year,
has a beautiful damascus blade, was used
to do the field dressing on my bear.

BRIDGEPORT GUN CLUB
I want to announce that Bridgeport Gun Club is
adding 6 more monthly novelty shoots to our
schedule. We will be shooting on the 3rd
Sunday of the month starting in January on the
18th. We will be shooting each month after
that thru September. We will shoot from
11am till 4pm. The course of fire will be 20
shots at mostly breakable targets. We will have
classes for rifle, trade gun, pistol, women’s and
kids. You can shoot more than 1 class so bring
extra guns and have more fun. Then in
February on the 15th we will have the Numb
Skull shoot. Come on out and join in on the
fun. We will look forward to seeing you on the
range.
