arrests 14 Fishermen
RAMESWARAM, Nov 23:
The Sri Lankan navy today arrested 14 Tamil Nadu fishermen
near Jaffna Peninsula, on
charges of poaching in Sri
Lankan waters.
Fisheries Department Assistant Directors Gopinath
and Sekar told PTI that the
fishermen
belonged
to
Rameswaram
and
Jagadapattinam in Pudukottai
district.
They said three boats of
the fishermen had also been
seized by the navy personnel.
The fishermen had been taken
to Karai Nagar in Jaffna, they
said.
The arrest comes days after five Indian fishermen on
death row in Sri Lanka were
released by the Sri Lankan
government.
They were arrested in Sri
Lankan waters in November
2011, on charges of drug
trafficking.
MPs want seat upgrade, extra baggage for
free, Air India says 'Sorry, not always'
NEW DELHI, Nov 23: Cashstrapped Air India has said it
can no longer afford to upgrade
seats of parliamentarians or
carry their extra baggage for
free any more - especially
when expensive seats are
booked by paying passengers.
Prime Minister Narendra
Modi has stopped first class
air travel for bureaucrats and
asking them to pay for their
spouses as part of its austerity measures.
But no such rule has yet
been put in place for parliamentarians and Air India, in
its communication to Parliament, noted that it gets a
large number of requests
from MPs which it can no
longer accommodate.
"Tickets are booked by

CBI chief
NEW DELHI, Nov 23: With
little over a week's time left for
CBI Director Ranjit Sinha to
demit office, the Centre has
started the process of selecting
a new chief of the investigating
agency.
The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT)
has sought the names of senior IPS officers fulfilling the
eligibility criteria to make a
panel for the selection committee to choose the CBI
director, official sources said.
The process for selection
of the next CBI chief has been
started by the DoPT, which
acts as nodal authority for
CBI, and the new appointment is likely to be made
before the present incumbent
tenure ends, the sources said.
According to the Lokpal
Act, the CBI chief has to be
appointed by the central government on the basis of
recommendation of the selection committee headed by the
PM, and comprising the
Leader of Opposition (LoP)
and the Chief Justice of India
or a Supreme Court judge
nominated by him as members.

KATHMANDU, Nov 23: An
Indian national, who was in the
most wanted list of Nepal Police, has been killed in an
encounter in southern Nepal,
police said. Sahasran Khan of
Maharajganj district, Uttar
Pradesh, was killed in an encounter between police and a
gang in Bishnupura village of
Rupandehi District yesterday,
Himalayan Times said.
Three of his gang members surrendered before the
police and a pistol was seized
from their possession.

in retaliation. Khan was involved in some murder and
robbery cases that had taken
place in the district.
"Khan was a most wanted
criminal for abducting and
murdering one Akash Gurung

Dhakal was quoted as saying
in the report.
Those who surrendered are
being interrogated as further
investigations are underway,

Smriti Irani turns down demands
to make Sanskrit compulsory
NEW DELHI, Nov 23:
Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Smriti
Irani today dismissed charges
that education is being
saffronised as she turned down
demands that Sanskrit be made
compulsory in the curriculum.
"Those who accuse me of
being a RSS mascot or RSS
representative possibly want
to deflect the attention from
the good work that we have
done... this agenda will be
flagged and I will be whipped
for as long as there is a need
to keep attention diverted
away from the good work. I
am ready for it. I have no
problem," she told PTI journalists in New Delhi.
Answering questions on
the controversial decision to

we are teaching Mandarin, we
teach German in the same
way. For the life in me, I
can't understand why people
don't understand what I am
saying," she said.
Irani had earlier strongly

23: India has asked the international community to educate the
future generations about slave
trade to ensure that horrors of
the past are not perpetuated
through racism and prejudice.
"The tragedy of transatlantic slave trade has been
undeniably one of the most
inhumane chapters in recorded human history,"
India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Asoke Mukerji said.
"This slave trade, which
happened over a 400-year
period, completely altered the
socio-economic fabric of African society, the effects of
which are still visible today.
The legacy continues in the
form of racism and prejudice
which are an affront to human dignity," he said at a UN
General Assembly session on
transatlantic slave trade on
Friday.
Mukerji said through education and remembrance the
international community must
build in future generations an
"understanding of the causes,
consequences and lessons of
slave trade so that the horrors
of the past are not perpetuated through racism and
prejudice."
He called for reaching a
broader audience by strengthening the involvement of
academics and institutions of
learning. He added that while
India had no role to play in
slave trade but it is willing to
jointly shoulder the responsibility that the international
community has for its remembrance and urged others to
