One self-evident aspect of this is the importance of raising people’s awareness of sustainability. As an entrepreneurial university, we expect our students to be inquisitive and innovative, to internalize knowledge and to be able to look beyond the confines of their discipline and of their country’s borders. The Twente Educational Model In 2013, the University of Twente launched the Twente Educational Model for undergraduate education, a radically new educational model to meet the needs of today’s students, who are accustomed to new, rapid methods of learning, interacting and cooperating. It offers a modular approach, stimulates students’ independent acquisition of knowledge and gives them more scope to pursue their interests. In this way, the Twente Educational Model places more emphasis on a profound and conceptual understanding of the heart of a discipline or domain, which is more important than a factual knowledge of every single aspect of a given domain. The continuous study workload and regular feedback require a high level of student engagement. Training in collaborative work and presentation skills takes place ‘on the fly’. Electrical Engineering students, for example, at the end of their first year take part in a competition: which group has built the best-performing broadcast antenna? For this, they are offered some modules on the mathematics and physics involved. It is up to them, however, to acquire the specific information they need to build the antenna, at a fixed and very low budget. UNIVERSITY OF TWENTE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE TWENTE In 2013, the University of Twente launched a truly unique university college: University College Twente (ATLAS, Academy of Technology and Liberal Arts & Sciences). It is the first university college of engineering sciences in The Netherlands. University College Twente is all about excellent education and international ambition. It is aiming at talented individuals who refuse to accept easy solutions to complex issues – ambitious students who want to broaden their skills so they can handle that level of complexity. In line with the Twente Educational Model, the programme of University College Twente is centered around problem solving. It is a fully English-taught BSc programme with a distinctive thematic approach and it is entirely at an Honours level. University College Twente graduates are admitted to prestigious national and international Master’s programmes. The PDENg trainee follows a two-year post-Master’s designer programme. PDEng trainees learn how to design high level, creative and innovative solutions for complex issues with a multidisciplinary character. Consisting of an educational component at the university and a period of practical design work in industry, the programme combines academic research in an industrial context with taught modules in a range of related subjects. It combines thorough training in medical skills with deep insight into technology, thus preparing students for a role in innovative patient care. Thanks to a recent change in Dutch law, Technical Medicine graduates are entitled to independently treat patients. It links experts in the fields of biomedical technology, nanotechnology and IT to their counterparts in the social sciences, public and business administration, as well as to industrial designers. Enabling such meetings to take place may help to speed up the process of finding solutions to social challenges. This also makes DesignLab a new type of discussion partner for the business sector. The DesignLab is an international workspace and meeting space where researchers, students, entrepreneurs, business developers, government bodies and artists can join forces to develop creative applications for new technologies. At the Lab, they are inspired to find unexpected, creative avenues of approach to solutions to social and economic challenges. New concepts and ideas are picked up and developed in a non-traditional fashion, after which prototypes can be immediately tested. The DesignLab brings international and regional parties together for interdisciplinary innovation projects. It also provides them with access to the pool of knowledge and talent that exists at, and around, the university. In addition, the DesignLab has an important ambition – to develop new disruptive technologies, with the latest scientific insights, to solve the social challenges of our time. 19 RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS UNIVERSITY OF TWENTE 20 RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS UNIVERSITY OF TWENTE MESA+ INSTITUTE FOR NANOTECHNOLOGY MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology is a world leading nanotechnology research institute. Around 525 researchers focus on new materials and nanostructures for a wide variety of ground-breaking applications: for example lab-on-a-chip systems, sensors and actuators, optics, solar cells, and quantum computing. With the MESA+ NanoLab facility sharing infrastructure, MESA+ has access to 1250 m2 of cleanroom space and state-of-the-art research equipment. The on-campus High Tech Factory offers nanotech R&D and production facilities to small and medium-sized companies. Nano pill Lab-on-a-chip systems are introducing major changes in chemical and medical diagnostics. At MESA+, systems like these have been developed for measuring lithium concentrations in the blood of patients suffering from bipolar disease. Another example is a chip that is used to determine male fertility, easily and comfortably. Future applications will include a ‘nano pill’ for the early detection of intestinal cancer, or even ‘organs-on-a-chip’, for medical research. For a full overview: www.utwente.nl/mesaplus 21 RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS IGS INSTITUTE FOR INNOVATION AND GOVERNANCE STUDIES IGS conducts multi-disciplinary research and offers postgraduate research training in the governance and management of technological and social innovation. The core research foci involve the co-ordination, steering and operation of institutions (and networks of institutions) in both public and private sectors, based on a multi-level, multi-actor perspective. IGS strives to combine scientific excellence with relevance for our stakeholders in the public and private sector. River care Dutch rivers will undergo major changes in the coming decades, in preparation for the anticipated effects of climate change. Soil, riverbanks and foreland will change as well. In the context of the Dutch national RiverCare programme, which is coordinated by IGS’ Water Engineering and Management group, all anticipated effects for the coming ten to fifty years will be thoroughly researched. This will include both physical and biological effects, as well as governance issues. The scientists of the University of Twente are cooperating with their counterparts at the universities of Utrecht, Nijmegen, Wageningen and Delft. Using ‘serious gaming’ within the UT Virtual Reality Lab, the effects are simulated in a virtual river. For a full overview: www.utwente.nl/igs UNIVERSITY OF TWENTE 22 RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS UNIVERSITY OF TWENTE 23 RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS MIRA INSTITUTE FOR BIOMEDICAL TECHNOLOGY AND TECHNICAL MEDICINE MIRA is inspired by the increasing role of technology in healthcare. Developing new technology for patients implies a synergetic combination of fundamental and applied research with clinical practice. Examples are rehabilitation research, technology for better diagnostics and care, controlled drug delivery and tissue engineering. MIRA cooperates closely with academic hospitals and spin-off companies. ExoSkeleton LOPES The LOPES robotic walking device (Lower extremity Powered ExoSkeleton), developed at the University of Twente, is specially designed for patients who have survived a stroke and, as a result, still have problems walking. The robot supports patient’s gait, automatically recognizing the level of support needed. During the training programme, the level of support will gradually diminish until the patient can walk entirely unaided once again. LOPES is already used by top rehabilitation centres in the Netherlands. The concept of measuring the patient’s brain signals and linking these to the instructions given to the robot is a promising new step in this field of research. CTIT is characterized by its ‘ICT Research in Context’ approach, in which research groups work together on contemporary technological, economic and social challenges. Multidisciplinary research is key, not only between technical disciplines such as computer science, electrical engineering and mathematics, but also between these disciplines and the behavioural and social sciences. Robot acquires social skills The next stage in robotics research involves their successful interaction with humans. They will acquire social skills for future applications, such as home care for the elderly. Can robots interpret human facial expressions or speech, for example, and respond to human needs? Several CTIT groups are working on robotics, both on the mechatronics involved and on interactions with human beings. One such project (which includes partners throughout Europe) involves the use of a social robot to guide visitors through museums or zoos. For a full overview: www.utwente.nl/ctit 27 RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS ITC FACULTY OF GEO-INFORMATION SCIENCE AND EARTH OBSERVATION ITC is recognized throughout the world for its achievements in teaching, research and capacity development in the field of geoinformation science and earth observation. The ITC Research Programme addresses problems related to the management of space and resources, as well as those related to the provision of relevant, timely, and reliable geospatial information, by conducting demand-driven research projects. Helping small farmers Remote sensing techniques, using satellites and drones, can help economies in the poorest areas in the world. Detailed information about cropland and soil, for example, can help farmers to improve their yields, and general quality of life. A project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and led by ITC’s Rolf de By, will investigate the full potential of these technologies. Over three decades, around 900 spin-off companies have been established, many of which are still active partners of the university. KENNISPARK TWENTE AS A KNOWLEDGE NETWORK AND INNOVATION CAMPUS Kennispark Twente was founded by the University of Twente, together with the province of Overijssel, the municipality of Enschede, the Twente region, and the Saxion University of Applied Sciences. Its purpose is to transform innovations into tangible economic activity and to boost innovative approaches and the knowledge infrastructure in the Twente region. Here, knowledge-driven companies can continue to develop their business, and prosper. Kennispark Twente gives both young and more seasoned entrepreneurs access to financing, talented staff, business development support programmes, new concepts and housing. Additionally, they can make use of the research facilities of the University of Twente. In this unique way, scientists and entrepreneurs have joined forces to bring about innovation. Even the physical surroundings are being altered to include both physical and virtual meeting places for scientists and entrepreneurs. We are a member of the 3TU Federation, a strategic partnership of the three leading universities of technology in the Netherlands (Delft University of Technology, Eindhoven University of Technology, and the University of Twente). The campus buildings are located on an impressive, verdant estate, in the municipality of Enschede. The scenery is diverse: meadows, water, landscaped gardens and extensive areas of woodland. Scattered around the campus are stateof-the-art research and educational facilities. But the campus is also a place to live, play sports and relax. In summer, the campus is a popular spot for walks and other forms of leisure. It offers a wide range of facilities, such as student and staff housing, sports halls and grounds, swimming pools, shops, meditation and prayer facilities, medical care, bars, restaurants and even an open air theatre. The campus is also a venue for events like “Create Tomorrow”, the world’s largest student think tank, and the “Batavierenrace”, the world’s largest student relay event. The campus is within cycling distance of the bustling centre of Enschede, which also offers many cultural attractions as well as places of worship. LIVING LAB Utilizing our campus as a “living lab” means that we use it as a test and demonstration facility for the latest technology originating from our university and beyond. Some examples of this are the development of a smart grid to monitor and regulate the supply of energy, and the development of a state-of-the-art water treatment system.
