Spring's in full swing at last - excuse enough to open with this photo taken in
Hyde Park last month. While these daffodils were fluttering and dancing in the
breeze, brightly clad Londoners of all ages were out jogging, getting into
shape for the summer.
Although this is our last Bulletin for a few months, there are still some activities
to look forward to before the summer break. The lecture on Chatsworth (21
April) may well whet appetites to visit that stately home in Derbyshire as soon
as possible, and The History of the Tulip (in Dutch, 13 May) will be a colourful
treat - not only for gardeners! Last but not least, the huifkar excursion on 13
June should be a delightful way to round off the GNE Season.

Pre-lecture supper at the Bieb, Hengelo
At the Library's 'Beurscafé', a light supper is served between 5.30 and 6.30 p.m. Reservation is required. Please call the catering
manager Nico Stroess (tel. 074-2560599, except on Mondays, when the Library is closed) preferably a week in advance, and also
tell him if you're a vegetarian or a 'vlees-verlater'. We are asked to be at our tables by 5.30. Those wishing to come early for a (predinner) drink are welcome from about 5 p.m.

There's an excellent 24 hour multi-storey car park right behind our venue, on the B.P. Hofstedestraat (the street off the Beursstraat,
between the Bibliotheek and the Rabotheater / Dragonder Restaurant). Just a few meters into the Hofstedestraat, you'll see the
entrance to the Parking Hengelo Centre garage.

LOOKING AHEAD
Carla Teune to replace Peter Goddard, May lecture
Due to unforeseen circumstances, Peter Goddard has cancelled his lecture tour in May; we hope he'll be
able to tell us about Sissinghurst Garden another time. In the meantime, we're fortunate to have found an
excellent replacement, Carla Teune, former Curator or 'Hortulana' of the Hortus Botanicus in Leiden. During
our excursion there in 2004, Mevr Teune presented an excellent lecture on Dr von Siebold, a pioneering
collector of exotic plants. We look forward to welcoming her to Hengelo on 13 May, when she'll speak about
the amazing tulip (see below).

(The History of the Tulip)
Talk by Carla Teune on Wednesday, 13 May
The tulip has a truly fascinating history. As one of most famous icons of the Netherlands, this popular plant
has a very important place in Dutch culture. Carla Teune's talk will be presented in Dutch, so the introduction
below (from Wikipedia) is given in Dutch.
Tulp (Tulipa) is een geslacht van eenzaadlobbige planten uit
de Leliefamilie (Liliaceae). Van origine komt de bloem uit
Turkije. Ze werd later ook in Turkije zelf waargenomen, waar
het een populaire voorjaarsbloeier werd, voor hen het
symbool van leven en vruchtbaarheid. In 1562 kwam de tulp
via Antwerpen als eerste Europa binnen. Rond 1593
verschenen de eerste exemplaren in Nederland. De eerste
gedocumenteerde exemplaren werden door Carolus Clusius
geplant in de door hem vanaf 1593 geleide Hortus botanicus
Leiden. De bostulp (Tulipa sylvestris) is de enige soort die in
Nederland in het wild voorkomt en is ingeburgerd vanaf de
19e eeuw.
CARLA TEUNE
After finishing Montessori Lyceum in Amsterdam I was educated at 'Huis te Lande', horticultural training
school. From there I went to work for 18 months in the famous 'Arboretum at Kalmthout' where Madame de
Belder gave me a broad finishing touch in horticulture and where I was allowed to read all the precious
books in their extensive library.
In 1967 I came to Leiden where I started as a 'botanical secretary' and here I still am, now as a retired oddjobs volunteer. The biggest step in my Hortus career was when I became the curator in 1984 and I enjoyed
that job fully!
Hobbies have much to do with plants: walking in the mountains and woodlands of Kashmir, China, Japan.
U.S.A. photographing plants (and of course people, temples, gardens too) and to see Tulips in the wild in
Kazachstan or wild heathers and suikerbossies in South Africa.
End of Season Event, Saturday 13 June
For our End of Season Event this year, we'll be staying in
Twente, starting and ending in Zenderen. We'll be taking a
leisurely afternoon trip by huifkar. What a lovely, lazy way to
enjoy our unspoilt local countryside! Whatever the weather, we'll
be dry and in good company.
PROGRAMME
We'll meet at 12 o'clock at Party Centrum Lutke Hulscher in
Zenderen, where a traditional farmers' lunch will be served.
Then we'll depart in two huifkarren, each with an accordionist
on board. We'll travel through the countryside of Zenderen
and Hertme, stopping at Hertme's open-air theatre and again
at a charming historic farmhouse (1849). As we travel along
the lanes and through the woods, we'll hear something of the
local history as well as many legends. Who knows, perhaps we'll even spot one or two of Twente's notorious
Witte Wieven! We'll stop on the way for 'kuiernat' or orange juice and near the end of the journey an old hag
will be waiting to serve her special witches' brew (disguised as soup).
We should be back at about 4.00 p.m., when you may like to have a drink at the Party Centrum (price not
included). Another optional extra is a group supper, if there's enough interest (see the reservation form).

TIP
A note for princesses (and princes) who may be sensitive to peas under mattresses: huifkar seating can't
compete with box-springs so it may be worthwhile bringing your own cushion!

Drawing the Baroque English Landscape – Kip, Knyff and English Gentlemen
Talk by Ray Biggs on Wednesday, 18 February
Mr Biggs started this talk with an introduction to the history of English country seats. These stately homes
displayed great wealth inside as well as outside. Their owners demonstrated that they had political power
and using symmetry and perspective, power over nature itself. Tree planting gave status, it also showed
support for the king because it enclosed the land.
The French landscape architect André le Nôtre (1613-1700) influenced English garden design. He fully
developed the type of spacious formal garden, characterized by extensive unbroken vistas. He designed the
gardens of Versailles. His principles dominated garden design in Europe until the rise of informal and
naturalistic gardens.
Lancelot 'Capability' Brown (1715-1783) designed more than a hundred landscaped parks. He rejected the
formal geometric style of gardening in favour of a more natural approach. The aristocracy were now seeking
the private and peaceful Arcadian world which he could create.
H. Winstanley (1644-1703) made a detailed set of engravings, which survive as an important record of
English manor house architecture. He also designed a set of playing cards which became very popular and
sold well in the coffee houses.
From 1680, two Dutchmen, Leonard Knyff and Johannes Kip, produced copperplate engravings. Their most
important works are views of country houses with formal gardens, published in the Brittannia Illustrata.
Johannes made the engravings of Leonard's drawings. These impressions are very accurate. As such they
are valuable social records of a great number of practical design details as well as of the fashion of the day.

Heart of the Sahara
Talk by John Pilkington on Wednesday, 11 March
In 2006 John spent three months in Mali for the latest of his
epic journeys. His destination was Taudenni, a remote and
primitive salt-mining settlement 450 miles to the north of
Timbuktu. Taudenni salt has been mined by hand for over a
thousand years. Centuries ago it was worth its weight in gold
and even now it's a valuable commodity in West Africa. Every
week from November to February, caravans of up to 50
camels still make the harsh, month-long round trip from
Timbuktu to collect this 'white gold' of the Sahara.
Some 80 guests fell silent in Hengelo's Central Library when
John addressed us with his usual enthusiasm. First, he set
the scene with a series of beautiful slides accompanied by the
music of Ali Farka Toure.
His journey started on the Niger where he took a river boat just below Bamako, chugging via Djenné and
Mopti to the ancient city of Timbuktu. There he was introduced to his guide, U-Batna, and Arabic-speaking
Moor, and three camels. There too, he was kitted out in full Arabic dress: the bou-bou (robe) and huli
(turban). Without these, he was told, he would scare the camels! His guide bought all the provisions for the
journey - mainly peanuts (LOTS of peanuts!), rice, dates, sugar and tea. Water was carried by the camels in
pouches. Some were made of leather (rather leaky), some from the inner tubes of tyres (more reliable).
Towards the end of the journey the camels also carried their own fodder - bails of tussock grass cut by John
and U-Batna who had to work ever harder to find this coarse vegetation as it became sparser and sparser.

After three weeks they arrived in Taudenni, a lunar landscape
where the summer temperature can reach 50 degrees
Celsius. Described by John as 'a posting from Hell',
Taudenni's community of 120 men had no houses, no fresh
water, no medicines, no electricity, no telephone - not even
any cooking fuel apart from camel dung. Nevertheless, they
were friendly and cheerful, John told us. The 'mines' may be
described as shallow pits in which they hacked out the salt in
slabs which weighed about 20 kilos each.
When the caravans arrive, each camel is loaded up with four
of these slabs and the return journey begins almost
immediately. Because of the harsh conditions, it's imperative
that they return as soon as possible.
In true Pilkington style, this lecture was a colourful personal insight into a fascinating country and its people.
From time to time we were delightfully sidetracked as John took us on various detours before reaching the
final destination! He closed his story with more Malian music, this time by one of his favourite musicians,
Salif Keïta.

NEWS AND NOTICES
Results of the BBC Awards 2009
The National Final of this year's BBC-GNE Young Writers and Public
Speaking Awards took place on Saturday 28 March in the Auditorium of
the University of Amsterdam. Aldith Hunkar presented the event and
the jury was chaired by HE Lyn Parker, the British Ambassador. The
GNE was well represented in the audience.
In the Public Speaking competition, the presentations of the eight
finalists were extremely impressive. Roos van Ees of the Montessori
Lyceum, The Hague, was the winner and Hannah Louise van Otterloo
of the Rijnlands Lyceum, Wassenaar was runner-up. The audience
award was also awarded to Roos van Ees. Both winners will take part
in the International Public Speaking Competition of the EnglishSpeaking Union in London from 18 to 22 May.
For the Young Writers Awards, eight essays were shortlisted. From
these, the jury selected Victor van Werkhooven, a student at the
Christelijk Gymnasium Utrecht as winner and David Vredevoogd of the
Cals College, Nieuwegein as runner-up. Both will follow a residential
summer course at one of the Arvon (the Foundation for Creative
Writing) centres in Great Britain. The audience award in this category
went to Maaike van der Plas of the Rijnlands Lyceum,

Our chairman Hans Kräwinkel has the mammoth task of organizing this annual event. As usual, he and his
band of GNE volunteers did a grand job! After the excitement of the Final, a large group of GNE friends
walked through the milling crowds of 'mellow' football supporters in kilts to the Utrechtsestraat where we
enjoyed an excellent supper at the restaurant, Het Fornuis.
Studium Generale, UT
The Dutch explained
Interactive lecture on Tuesday May 12th, 19.30 – 21.00 hrs. Vrijhof, Amphitheatre
The University of Twente is an international university with students from all over the world. One of the first
things they encounter when studying at the campus are the typical habits and customs of the Dutch. Why are
the Dutch so tidy? So punctual? Why do they seem so informal? Or is this merely appearance? Drs Gitta

Montanus will shed light on these questions and explain why the Dutch are as they are. This lecture is very
interesting for students from abroad, but will be surprising and informative for the Dutch as well.
The speaker is a cultural anthropologist who has travelled and studied all around the world. She visited
Cambodia, Vietnam, India, Israel, the United States and almost all European countries. The biggest culture
shock she experienced was in Great-Britain.
This lecture will be in English. Admittance free, no reservations.
Shakespeare Theater Diever: proposed excursion, 22 August
'Much Ado About Nothing' (Hoop Gedoe om Niks)
It's some years since we set out as a group to Diever but past
excursions have always been most pleasant. This (Dutch language)
open-air production of Shakespeare's romantic comedy sounds
particularly appealing so Hans Kräwinkel has offered to organise a
group trip to the only matinee performance on Saturday, 22 August. If
the group is large enough, it may be worth hiring a bus, otherwise, we'll
travel by car. The idea is to set off in the morning and bring a picnic
lunch. Anyone interested in going should contact Hans (tel

“Een feestelijk stuk, maar wel met een serieuze ondertoon”, zo typeert Jack Nieborg de
romantische komedie “Much Ado About Nothing".
“Het stuk komt op mij over als een in het wild om zich heen schietende Cupido” zegt
Nieborg. “Het is heel spannend om dan juist uit die ogenschijnlijke wirwar een soepel
lopende voorstelling te maken.”
In zijn vertaling en vervolgens in zijn regie zal die souplesse een grote rol spelen.
“Neem bijvoorbeeld het paar Benedick en Beatrice. Die zitten elkaar onafgebroken in
de haren, maar het publiek moet aanvoelen dat die stekeligheden meer spel dan
werkelijkheid zijn. Want op het eind krijgen ze elkaar, dus zó onaardig hadden ze het
blijkbaar niet bedoeld. Ze moeten ook niet als twee sjaggerijnige mopperkonten
overkomen; hun verbale schermutselingen moeten het publiek wel amuseren.”
Naast deze al wat gerijpte gelieven staat het andere paar: Claudio en Hero. Piepjong, en tot over hun oren verliefd. Ook daar valt
weer veel amusants aan te beleven, zelfs als door een vuil spelletje even de indruk wordt gewekt, dat Hero een relatie heeft met een
andere man. Claudio is zo van zijn stuk gebracht, dat hij de arme Hero verstoot. Schrik niet, ook dat komt weer op z’n pootjes
terecht.
