Mike When we think about all that Jesus has done for us, it’s appropriate that we show him that we are grateful. On this Feast of Christ the King we honor Jesus and recognize that he has dominion over all the earth. We will conclude our 11:30 AM Mass today with a Eucharistic procession around the church and into our chapel, and we invite you to come and spend some time in prayer and adoration in the presence of our Savior. Our annual Christmas Flower offering is being taken up today as a second collection. Our church always looks so beautiful for the great Feast of the Nativity of our Lord, and your generosity helps make this possible. At Christmas time we will include a list of all Christmas flower memorials in our bulletin. This weekend we are happy to welcome Jane Latini, representing Interfaith Caregivers, a very important ministry of visiting and assisting the homebound. Our own “Open Hearts, Willing Hands” group here at St. Mary’s does wonderful work here in our community. They are always happy to accept new volunteers to assist them in their work. This is the final weekend to place your order for the beautiful Christmas wreaths offered by our St. Vincent de Paul Society. This fundraiser helps our Vincentians provide assistance to local needy families. Order forms may be found by our church exits. Wreaths may be picked up after Masses on the weekend of December 6 – 7. Fr. Jay Bowden will be visiting our church this Monday to celebrate a Healing Mass at 7:30 PM. All are invited to come and experience the healing and comfort our loving Savior offers us. A period of fellowship in our school hall will follow the Mass. Our nation will celebrate Thanksgiving Day this Thursday, and there is no better way to observe this day than to come to Mass and thank God personally for His many blessings. We will celebrate Masses of Thanksgiving that day at 7:30 AM in our chapel and 9 AM in our church, and I hope many of you will come and offer God your thanks. There will be no evening Mass on Thanksgiving Day, and our parish office will be closed for the holiday on Thursday and Friday. I will also be participating along with several local clergy at the Bordentown Interfaith Thanksgiving Eve Service on Wednesday at 7:30 PM at the Trinity United Methodist Church on Farnsworth Avenue, and I’m hoping many of you will join us. Next weekend we will begin the Season of Advent and a new Church year. I was pleased to see so many families at our Advent Wreath workshop this past Friday, and I encourage everyone to have a wreath in your home and use it as a focal point for family prayer during this Mon. Parishioners are welcome! THE LORD’S FLOCK Sheep are high-maintenance animals. They are not very intelligent. Without guidance and care, especially in a climate like Israel’s, they would die quickly from predators, starvation, or just their own slowness. The Scriptural image of us as the Lord’s flock is not terribly flattering to us, since it is only the never-ending diligence of a watchful shepherd that allows the flock to survive. The feast of Christ the King was intended to call the world back to Christ as the sole power of the world, to bring back a flock that had been scattered by many negative forces of the growing industrial, scientific, and war-torn world of the early twentieth century. It is fitting that, as we celebrate Christ the King, we hear about Christ the Shepherd who cares for us and who, likewise, will be there at the end of time. Interestingly enough, as the Gospel illustrates, our own destiny is determined by the way START WITH GRATITUDE Gratitude is the inward feeling of kindness received. Thankfulness is the natural impulse to express that feeling. Thanksgiving is the following of that impulse. —Henry Van Dyke Page 4 November 23, 2014 Rosary and Altar Society News RESPECT LIFE “Each of Us is a Masterpiece of God’s Creation!” "Through Mary, the miserable obtain mercy, the graceless find grace, and sinners receive pardon." —Saint Augustine of Hippo (354–430 AD) LINENS Week of November 23 Week of November 30 Jodie Finn Claudia Houseworth UPCOMING EVENTS: >>WEEKDAY ROSARY–7AM & 8AM in the Chapel, before and after the 7:30AM Mass. >>ROSARY HOURS – EVERY TUESDAY from 2–3PM in the chapel; and EVERY WEDNESDAY at 3 PM for priests and religious. The pantry is also looking for Thursday evening volunteers to work every other Thursday. If we do not get volunteers to fill this position we will not be able to remain open Thursday evenings. Our food pantry hours are as follows: M-W-F 2-3:00 PM; Mass and Healing Service – November 24th Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord (James 5:14). Father Jay Bowden, a retired priest from the Diocese of Trenton, will be offering a Mass on Monday November 24th at 7:30 PM for healing. During the Mass, a collection will be taken for Father Jay and his ministry. Following the Mass will be individual prayer and Laying on of Hands for the sick. Father Jay is a well-known speaker and ministers in the Gift of Healing. Following the Mass and Laying on of Hands, a reception for Father will take place in the school cafeteria. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Coming to the end of the Church year, we can wonder how we got “extreme unction” out of “anointing of the sick.” “Extreme” comes from a Latin phrase, in extremis, which in English refers to the last struggle of a dying person. “Last rites” is a phrase in common usage, and refers to the fact that years ago everyone waited until the last crisis of illness to summon the priest. The goal of anointing had always been healing and forgiveness, but in time it began to be seen as a preparation for death. In a hard world, almost anything from a hangnail to a sneeze could be life-threatening, so perhaps the change was inevitable. The emphasis on the penitential aspects was heightened, even to the odd practice of Rome in the twelfth century, when the sick person was sprinkled with ashes mixed with holy water and given a hair shirt as a sign of penance. The reformers thankfully overlooked some of these oddities of history, and today the sacrament of the sick is much more generously applied to persons in a wide range of situations. Still, it is a sacrament of reconciliation, and for that reason is not celebrated for an infant or toddler, although there is a rite for a visit to a sick child not Thanksgiving Day Mass Schedule This Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, we are offering a Mass at 7:30 AM in our chapel and a special Mass of Thanksgiving at 9 AM in our church. Come and give thanks to God for all the blessings He has given us! There will be no evening Mass on Thursday, and our parish office will be Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Feast of Christ the King November 23, 2014 “I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink.” — Matthew 25:35 Readings for Sunday, November 30, 2014: Isaiah 63:16–17, 19; 64:2–7 In the first reading we hear the prophet Isaiah praying in petition for the Lord to reveal himself. This was probably towards the end of the Babylonian exile. Isaiah acknowledges Israel's sense of guilt and shame—their turning away from God that led to their captivity. Isaiah's closing words describe Israel's relationship with God. "yet, oh Lord, you are our father. We are the clay and you are the potter; we are all the work of your hands." Today we pray the same prayer: Father, you are the potter we are the clay, the work of your hands. Psalm 80:2-3, 15-16, 18-19 Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved. 1 Corinthians 1:3-9 Paul's letters usually open with the greeting and a Thanksgiving. [Let's try to address all with a greeting and thanksgiving]. Today's second reading is thanksgiving to the church in Corinth. God has graced the church in Corinth "not lacking in any spiritual gift as you await the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ." These words are for us today. In spite of the world, God will keep us firm to the end. "God is faithful, and by him, you were called to fellowship with his son Jesus Christ our Lord." Gospel — Mark 13:33–37 The Gospel is part of Jesus's end-time discourse to the apostles. Jesus forewarns the four apostles Peter, Andrew, James, and John to "Be watchful, be alert,"since no one knows when the time will come. Jesus gives an example of a wise traveler who carefully made arrangements for his house to be guarded; he left home with his servants in charge, each with his own work. "Watch", for you do not know when the lord of the house is returning. We are all called to be alert and watch for the coming of the Lord at the end of time. We have all been given a job by God and we must diligently believe and spread the Good News of Jesus Christ to our loved ones and all those whom God places in our path. We will all meet Jesus face-to-face at an unspecified time; it will be when we die or Community Thanksgiving Service The annual Bordentown Interfaith Thanksgiving Eve Service will be held this year on Wednesday, Nov. 26th at 7:30 PM at the Trinity United Methodist Church on Farnsworth Avenue. Clergy from several area churches including Fr. Mike will participate. The service includes hymns, prayers, Scripture readings and a homily. A voluntary offering will be taken up to support the Good Neighbor Guild, which provides emergency assistance to November 23, 2014 St. Andrew — Feast Day is November 30th Andrew was St. Peter’s brother, and was called with him. "As Jesus was walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is now called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen. He said to them, ‘Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.’ At once they left their nets and followed him" (Matthew 4:18-20). John the Evangelist presents Andrew as a disciple of John the Baptist. When Jesus walked by one day, John said, "Behold, the Lamb of God." Andrew and another disciple followed Jesus. "Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, ‘What are you looking for?’ They said to him, ‘Rabbi’ (which translated means Teacher), ‘where are you staying?’ He said to them, ‘Come, and you will see.’ So they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day" (John 1:38-39a). Little else is said about Andrew in the Gospels. Before the multiplication of the loaves, it was Andrew who spoke up about the boy who had the barley loaves and fishes (see John 6:8-9). When the Gentiles went to see Jesus, they came to Philip, but Philip then had recourse to Andrew (see John 12:20-22). Legend has it that Andrew preached the Good News in what is now modern Greece and Turkey and was crucified at Patras. Comment: As in the case of all the apostles except Peter and John, the Gospels give us little about the holiness of Andrew. He was an apostle. That is enough. He was called personally by Jesus to proclaim the Good News, to heal with Jesus' power and to share his life and death. Holiness today is no different. It is a gift that includes a call to be concerned Thanksgiving Day Holiday The rectory office will be closed on Nov. 27th and 28th for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Fr. Mike, Fr.
