IMPORTANT MESSAGE REGARDING ATTENDANCE
Parental Link is TUSD’s newest automated message system which calls and emails parents when a
student has been marked absent but has not yet been excused from school during one or more of their
classes. Communications are sent out at approximately 10:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on school days.
If you receive an attendance call or email please call the UHS Attendance Office at 232-5902 to excuse
the absence.
• If you feel you received this call or email in error please contact the UHS Attendance Office to determine
which period your student was marked absent. In addition, please have your student contact their teacher
to clarify or correct the same.
Seniors
• November 22 is the deadline for ordering caps, gowns and graduation announcements from
rembrandtgrad.com. Your orders will be delivered on campus in late March/early April 2014. Class rings
and letter jackets and sweaters may also be custom ordered with 7-8 weeks delivery. Visit Rembrandt

Health Office
• With the cold and flu season approaching we are asking for your assistance to help prevent illness from
spreading. If your child is sick with fever of 100 degrees or above they must stay home and cannot return
until they are fever free for 24 hours, without benefit of fever reducing medication. We understand the
importance of attendance, however if your child is sick please keep them home until they are feeling

• Pima County Public Library online homework help Brainfuse can be found at

active Pima County Public Library card with a pin number.
• Support your school Library! The 1st Annual Readers’ Recycle Book Fair will be December 1-5, 2014
from 7:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. in the Library. Donations of gently used books and magazines are needed to
make our Fair a success. Donations may be dropped off between 7:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on Mondays,
Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and between 7:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. on Wednesdays.

• Do you need help with college application essays, AP papers, reading difficult text, preparing for
the SAT? If so, come see Mrs Minor in the College and Career Center on Mondays and Tuesdays
7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. or on Wednesdays 12:00-4:00 p.m. for assistance.
• Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is inviting students to participate in MIT INSPIRE, a new
national research competition in the arts, humanities and social studies, organized by MIT students
exclusively for high school students. You may participate by submitting entries and competing for awards.
The first deadline for abstract submissions is January 7, 2015 with the final round of competition being
held at MIT’s campus in Cambridge, MA April 4-7, 2015. Please go to getinspired.mit.edu for more

• The Bronfman Youth Fellowships in Israel (BYFI) is recruiting 26 individuals who will be entering their
12th grade of high school in the fall of 2015 for their 29th annual BYFI program. The program includes an
all-expense paid five-week trip to Israel and two seminars in New York City. No Jewish background is
required for eligibility. Application deadline is January 6, 2015. Please go to www.bronfman.org for more

• Tucson East Lodge #2532 Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks are sponsoring a Senior Student
of the Month contest. Winners will receive an award certificate and a $50 gift card. This contest is for an
outstanding Senior student each month, from October 2014 through March 2015. Entries are to be mailed
to the Elks Lodge no later than the 15th of each month. Additional contest information and nomination
forms are available in the UHS Counseling Office.
• Juniors interested in taking the AIMS to receive an ‘exceeds’ rating please see Mrs Morales in the
Counseling Department.

• All senior transcripts have been evaluated for graduation requirements. If a senior has not completed their
.5 Health or 1.0 PE credit and are not currently enrolled in the class, they will be removed from an elective
2nd semester and placed in the required course. Any online course for PE or Health MUST be completed
and recorded before Winter Break (December 19, 2014).
• Washington State University’s fall visitation events are in full swing. Please go to visit.wsu.edu to sign

• The Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship application is now available online. Each new JRF
Scholar receives $24,000 over four years to attend a four-year accredited college or university. Please go

• The annual NFIB Young Entrepreneur Award program is offering non-renewable scholarships to 2015
graduating high school seniors who own/operate an established business. Scholarships are valued
between $1,000 and $15,000 and are merit-based. Application deadline is December 18, 2014. Please

• The Linking Hispanic Heritage Through Archeology Program is now accepting applications for the
2015 spring program. They are looking for motivated students who are eager to learn about archeology
and southwestern culture, including Hispanic heritage. Students who are selected for the program will
participate in an archaeological dig (as part of the University of Arizona’s Spring Field School), analyze
artifacts and visit National Parks, museums and archaeological labs. Applications are due December 3,

• Boston University is offering merit-based scholarships. Their Trustee Scholarship is a full-tuition
scholarship which recognizes extraordinary academic performance and leadership ability. Students must
submit an essay and be nominated by their principal. Their Presidential Scholarship is a $20,000
renewable tuition scholarship that is awarded to students with exceptional academic achievements.
Students need only to apply for admission by the deadline to be considered. Application deadline is
December 1, 2014.

Baylor University is announcing their Invitation to Excellence. This is a special weekend program that
showcases exciting academic opportunities at Baylor University. Qualified Students can apply to attend
one of two events. Students receive a $2,000 scholarship for attending and can also apply for a full-tuition

Teen Lifeline is a 24-hour Peer Counseling Crisis line for adolescents. The Peer Counelors are prepared
to discuss issues ranging from relationships and family problems to suicide. The hotline is staffed 24
hours a day, 365 days a year, with Peer Counselors available from 3:00-9:00 p.m. daily. We encourage
teens to call Teen Lifeline to discuss problems before they reach the point of crisis. The crisis line number
for statewide calls is 800-248-TEEN (8336).
Want college and career information? Need scholarships? Need reminders to complete your AzCIS
portfolio? The UHS Student Support Services Department has created a Remind 101 account. You will
receive a text message from Remind 101 alerting you to great events, opportunitites, monthly scholarships

The HEFAR Group is a free resource to help you navigate the complex financial aid process. To access
their monthly Cash for College Newsletter please go to [email protected]. Like them on Facebook and you
could win a $1,000 scholarship. At the end of the year the HEFAR Group will have a random drawing that
includes the names of everyone who liked them that year.
Thanks to a grant from the National Science Foundation, St. Bonaventure University will invite 25
high school seniors to participate in Discovery Within Community, a unique four-year program
focused on five traditional STEM disciplines. Every student invited into the program will receive
scholarships between $3,500 - $6,500 annually for each of their four years at St. Bonaventure in a
STEM major. These dollars are in addition to any other Merit scholarship and financial aid the student
receives. Students will also receive special academic support services and have regular interaction

St. Bonaventure University’s merit-based scholarships are awarded on the basis of a three year
cumulative high school average (freshman through junior year) and SAT or ACT scores. Merit awards
include the St. Bonaventure Presidential Scholarship, Friars Scholarship, Provost Scholarship and St.
Bona Achievement Scholarship. Their also offer other financial awards including the Southern Tier
Scholarship, St. Bonaventure Buckeye Award, Geographic Diversity Award, Sibling Grant and

Attention All Juniors: It is time for Pre-Senior year checkups. Please schedule an appointment with Ms
Allen in the College and Career Center so that she can review the following:

3. Post-high school plans
4. Academic progress
5. Senior course selection
Meetings will be 10-15 minutes. The sign-up sheet will be placed on Ms Allen’s door. Checklist forms
may be obtained in the College and Career Center. You must have your sheet completed BEFORE your
meeting with Ms Allen. Failure to do so will result in a rescheduled appointment. Please come prepared!
This meeting is mandatory. All meetings need to happen no later than December 12.

• Any student who received a SunTran bus pass last school year is being asked to bring their current
Student ID Card to the Attendance Office (before or after school) to verify their eligibility for a new bus
pass. We’ve been informed that last year’s passes will no longer work.
• Neighborhoods South of Campus will have random stake outs after school by the Tucson Police
Department where they will be ticketing drivers for speeding through the neighborhoods. Please
remember that the speed limit is 25 m.p.h.
