INTRODUCTION (About the Seminar) Water bodies are prime natural resources, fulfilling basic human needs and are precious national asset. Through ages these water bodies both natural & man-made have served as water storage reservoirs in the monsoon dependent areas where there exists a shorter period of rainfall. Our state is having a rich heritage of both natural and man-made water bodies as Deccan topography of the Hyderabad region facilitated the construction of lakes .The Kakatiya dynasty, Kutub Shahi kings and Asif Jahis built several tanks giving Hyderabad the title of city of lakes. These water bodies provide drinking water to millions and help in recharging the ground water levels of the region. But over last few decades’ chaotic urbanization, rampant construction, absence of effective administrative systems and lack of awareness among the community especially in urban landscapes has lead to encroachment on natural drainage channels jeopardizing the existence of these water bodies and has resulted in urban floods, water logging and water crisis. Indiscriminate disposal of sewage and toxic industrial effluents have further polluted and deteriorated the quality of water bodies. The fast drying up of water bodies is a great challenge, there is a need to preserve, restore, and revitalize these vanishing water bodies. It is equally important to create awareness among the public about their conservation and seed new ideas for enriching the water table which will serve as a source for healthier livelihood in present and for future generations. Keeping in view, the present scenario the seminar is organized with an aim of promoting awareness to sensitize on conservation and safeguarding of the water bodies , arriving at strategies with new approaches and to provide a forum for scientists, engineers, policymakers, NGO’s and public to come together to exchange views, ideas, suggestion and arrive at logical conclusions.
