Oli widens rift among Madheshi leaders

among Madheshbased
parties since the departure
south Asian leaders after
18 th SAARC held in
Kathmandu.
The lead of Nepali politics
has shifted from UML boss
Oli so he has been engaged
in searching an end of
thread binding the current
political situation according
to his wishes especially after
the suggestion expressed by
Indian Prime Minister
Narendra Modi.
Indian Prime Minister Modi
drew the attention of Nepali
leaders about the Indian
concern attached to the
peace, stability and
prosperity of Nepal. While
Modi was saying in
constituent assembly during
his first Nepal visit that
suffering of Nepal would
cause India suffer. Then all
political leaders clapped for
the saying. The same thing
Modi repeated in the form
of consensus. Reality is that
without consensus no peace
will be in country. If Nepal
is in trouble, naturally India
will be in trouble.

Janadhikar Forum Nepal has sadi that Joint Democratic
Madheshi Front has been in hurry to join government.
Yadav threatened the leaders of Front not to make
Madheshi people a ladder of joining government issuing a
press release on Saturday. Yadav himself is member of
Front. As KP Oli offered Bijaykumar Gachhedar president
of Forum Democratic the post of defense ministry with
Deputy Prime Minister Yadav issued the release saying
that. He also mentioned in his release that his party was
broken only for money and posts of minister in past.
Leaders of Madheshi parties are in the game of grabbing
money and power selling the sacrifice and struggle of
Madheshi people.

Why Asma Jahangir is on ISI’s hit list?
Don’t choose government
Exercise of a new government has begun in
contemporary politics. Both big ruling parties of
Nepal want forming so-called national government
for their party’s interest. Prime Minister and
Congress Chairman Sushil Koirala has touched the
nerves of Madheshi leaders recently refreshed by
KP Sharma Oli, Chairman of CPN (UML). Both
Koirala and Oli want offering all what they have
except only the post of Prime Minister. Greedy
Madheshi leaders are highly disturbed what to do
what not to do. They declared that they would not
join the government before constitution announced
at the time of reviving the Joint Democratic
Madheshi Front. But after the constitution
announced there would be no value of Madheshi
leaders and they would not get what wanted. Some
leaders have agreed to join the government when
they call. But Upendra Yadav ,President of
Madheshi Janadhikar Forum Nepal and a member
of the Front, has opposed joining government.
Yadav said that some leaders had been bargaining
the sacrifice and struggle of Madheshi people.
People of Madheshi also don’t want Madheshi
parties joining the government. They want their
rights to secured first. Government’s agencies have
been strict to Madheshi activists. Recently Dr. CK
Raut was sent jail just saying that rights to
separation should be enshrined in the constitution.
So situation is against Madheshi people. It will be
better not to join the government.

Now that it is widely known
that the notorious intelligence
agency, ISI, had put in place
a diabolical plan to kill highly
respected human rights
activist, Asma Jahangir, the
question that needs to be
asked is, but why?
This is far from a conspiracy
theory. The conspiracy to kill
Asma Jahangir was revealed
not by any journalist but a US
whistleblower who made
thousands of classified
documents relating to
electronic snooping carried
out by US intelligence
agencies. The highly
classified documents
showed Pakistan military
officials plotting the
assassination of Asma
Jahangir some time in May
2012 when she was on a visit
to India. The intelligence
brief said the plan “included
either tasking militants to kill
her in India or tasking
militants or criminals to kill
her in Pakistan”. Part of the
plan was to pin the blame on
Jahangir’s family members.
Two questions need to be
asked to understand how
grave this news is. First is
why would ISI or Pakistan
Army think of killing an
otherwise
harmless
chairperson of Human
Rights Commission of
Pakistan and a widely
respected lawyer. Second is
what does it tell you about
Pakistan.
ISI had quite a few reasons
to see Asma Jahangir
disappear from the face of
the earth. As the head of the
Human Rights Commission
of Pakistan (HRCP), Asma
Jahangir has been raking up
issues which deeply hurt
Pakistan Army’s image and
prestige, both within the
country and in the
international arena. Jahangir
for instance has been
relentlessly pursuing every
single case of disappearance
or killing in Balochistan for
years now, creating a
comprehensive database for
the Supreme Court to
adjudicate effectively.
Under her stewardship, the
commission has been
sending
teams
of
independent researchers to
Balochistan to investigate the
killings and human rights
violations by the armed
forces operating in the area.
The commission’s reports,
made public at regular
intervals, have been scathing
in its criticism, calling up on
the state, particularly military
leadership, to investigate
cases of wanton killings of
innocent Baloch people and
punish the guilty. She has
been equally strong in
condemning the attacks on
Shias and other minorities in
Pakistan, often by groups
which enjoy the patronage of
Pakistan Army.
But what has riled the
military leadership is her
continuous criticism of the
army and its notorious
intelligence services. She
has been openly challenging
the army in public debates
inside and outside television
channels. In December
2011, she breathed fire on the
military during a television
debate, calling the army
“duffers. They are politically
duffers. If you will follow
their policy, as you have (in
the past), the country will
never progress. I don’t care
what USA or anyone else
thinks. I only care that
people of our country should
save themselves from this
Army. Pakistan Army is
responsible for the present
situation.”
She didn’t stop there. She
accused the army of
spreading “ terrorism in
every nook and corner of the
country. The army supports
terrorism and encourages
it...I don’t allege all the army
men. I am not alleging
ordinary army jawans. But
the army generals, who play
golf all the time, gossip and
look for the best pieces of
land for themselves. The
army has made us (citizens)
slaves. …If you really need
some crown on your head
please go, fight a war and
show us that you can win a
war. You did the Kargil misadventure, you kill light
infantry soldiers…. You are
not able to fight, you cannot
run the country, and you
cannot make policy. You are
a Qabza Group. You are a
Qabza Group of this
country.``
Now, in Pakistan, ruled by
Pakistan Army since 1947,
directly or behind the scenes,
you can’t get away by
challenging the army so
openly and brazenly. Last
time, any one thought of
doing it met with a brutal
death: Syed Saleem Shahzad,
a journalist who thought he
could hoodwink the army,
was picked up near his home,
kept in confinement where
he was tortured to death and
his body dumped by the
roadside. Every one knew
who did the brutal act, many
dared to openly say it also
but no one was held
accountable. Shahzad had
dared to report about the
growing radicalism within the
armed forces after the
Mehran naval base attack in
May 2011. Shahzad was
otherwise a ‘good friend‘ of
the army, ably projecting
what the GHQ wanted to tell
the world. But when he
crossed the red line, he met
with his death in a brutal
manner. There were others
like Ghulam Husnain, a
respected journalist who
profiled notorious criminal
Dawood Ibrahim, a friend
and ally of ISI, stating that
he was openly living in
Clifton Avenue, Karachi.
Pakistan had all along denied
Dawood’s presence in the
country. Husnain, a few days
after the story appeared in a
English monthly Newsline,
disappeared; abducted by
ISI goons, kept in illegal
confinement for over a week
before he was released a
thoroughly shaken up man.
Till date, he has not said a
word what happened to him
during
the
illegal
confinement. There were
several others who met with
various kinds of punishment
for challenging the army.
The fact that the army had
planned the killing of Asma
Jahangir a few months after
she began challenging the
military shows how little
Pakistan has changed and
how ruthless the army has
become.

in 18th SAARC Summit
held in Kahtmandu. I
have taken his visit as a
positive sense in Nepali
politics and India Nepal
friendship. In the
sidelines of SAARC , in
the presence of Modi
some agreements have
signed with Nepal under
bilateral relationship. I
believe that these signed
agreements will be
fruitful for Nepal.
Q. Visit of Indian
Prime Minister has
been after 17 years in
Nepal seen twice one
after another. Why
would you think no
visit of Indian Prime
Minister in Neapl
happened in the time
span of 17 years.
- Nepal didn’t boycott
the visit of an Indian
Prime Minister to
Nepal. Visit of Indian
Prime Minister depends
on their personal wills
and situations. In some
extent there would have
some weakness ensuring
visit of Indian Prime
Minister to Nepal. But
recently Indian Prime
Minister Modiji has
shown his personal
effort to more friendly
relationship with Nepal.
The visit of Modiji has
added a new dimension
in the relation between
Nepal and India. I think
in past Nepal was facing
people’s war like
agitations, toppling of
monarchy, and critical
transitional period so
the visit was not
possible. Our country
was in sensitive
situation.
During
conflict such visits are
not taken positive rather
than in peaceful
situation.
Q.The scheduled
visits of Modi to
Janakpur, Lumbini
and Muktinath have
been cancelled at final
stage. How far this
will impact in the
relation between
Nepal and India?
- The visits of Modi of
Janakpur, Lumbini and
Muktinath
were
scheduled. I was also
engaged
in
the
preparation of Janakpur
visit. I was in Janakpur.
Preparation was going
rapidly. About the visit
of Modi people of
Nepal and India were
excited. People of
Janakpur were more
excited.
By the
headline’ Indian Prime
Minister is in marriage
party from Ayodhya to
Janakpur’ people of
Janakpur area were more
excited and happy.
Bibahpanchami is an
annual celebration of
marriage of Goddess
Sita and God Rama by
Hindus. Symbolically
people of Janakpur

eleventh hour the visit
of Modi was cancelled
so people were
disappointed. Really
this has disturbed the
situation. But this will
not affect the relation
between Nepal and India.

doubts about the

But I had not to disclose

Kailali Mithu Swar inhabitant of Dhangarhi municipality -4 Omshantinagar

Sarlahi . 10 years old Niraj Moktan son of Krishna Bahadur Moktan

Madhesh based parties, Bijaykumar Gacchedar has been bargaining for
the bigger part of the government. And Gachhedar again wanted to break
Madheshi parties because Madheshi leaders had been greedy of the power
and money. Previously Gachhedar broke Madheshi Janadhikar Forum
Nepal. Sniffing the situation Yadav opposed the bargain of Gachhedar for
joining government before constitution. Oli has been using this opportunity
for widening rift among Madheshi leaders. Experts say if Madheshi leaders
remain united, the course of politics will be different but Madheshi leaders
have formed their parties not for Madheshi people so it can’t be said they
will not join the upcoming government.

PDA talks on Upper TrishuliI to be held today
RASUWA: The fourth round of
negotiations to sign the Project
Development Agreement (PDA) of
the Upper Trishuli-I Hydroelectric
Project is scheduled for Monday.
Nepal Water and Energy
Development
Company
(NWEDC), the developer of the
216 MW project stated that if the
PDA and Power Purchase
Agreement (PPA) are finalised,
they could immediately start
construction work.
“We are optimistic that this time we
can finalise the PDA as in the third
round of negotiations both parties
had agreed on most of the issues,”
said Baburam Bharadwaj, general
manager at NWEDC.
According to the company, they
have already completed track
opening, test tunnel excavation, land
acquisition, tree cutting permission
and construction of 4.5 km stretch
out of the 15 km access road. The
project has also got approval for
Environmental Impact Assessment
and to conduct the Cumulative
Impact Assessment study a
consultant has been appointed.

spokesperson of the Ministry of
Energy, said, “There are only a few
issues to agree on to have PDA pact
signed for Upper Trishuli-I project.
The developer has demanded for
payment guarantee by the
government. As there is no clear
policy, we have yet to agree.”
According to him, the PDA
document will be more or less like
the recently signed PDAs of Upper
Karnali and Arun III projects.
NWEDC obtained the survey
licence for the run-of-river type
Upper Trishuli-1 project in January
2006 and the company initiated the
process for PDA in March 2013.
The project will affect Haku,
Dhunche and Ramche VDCs of
Rasuwa. According to the
company, the estimated total
project
cost
would
be
approximately Rs 57.8 billion.
The project, designed under Q51,
will generate 306.7 Gwh during dry
season and 1,149.7 Gwh of energy
in wet season annually. It will have
three generation units of 72 MW
each. The energy generated by the
project will be evacuated via the
proposed substation of Nepal
Electricity Authority (NEA) at
Trishuli 3B project at Manakamana
VDC in Nuwakot.
As per the company, they have
proposed PPA at 6.9 cents per unit
with annual escalation rate of three
per cent for the first 10 years of
generation. However, NEA has yet
to decide on PPA in US dollar
terms.
Project officials said they would
allocate 10 per cent of the shares
in the project to locals from
affected areas. The project is being
promoted by KOSEP (50 per cent),
Daelim (15 per cent) and Kyeryong
(10 per cent) — companies of
South Korea; International Finance
Corporation (15 per cent), and
Bikesh Pradhanang (10 per cent)
— a Nepali promoter. IFC, ADB,
Proparco
(France),
DEG
(Germany),
FMO
(The
Netherlands) and Korean
Development Bank are the funding
agencies for the project.

Clarification about Bodhi tree in Lumbini
Kathmandu : Our attention has been
drawn to the news reports regarding
plantation of sacred sapling of Bodhi
tree brought from Bodh Gaya in the
premises of the Mayadevi temple
complex in Lumbini. The location of
plantation of the sacred sapling of
Bodhi tree had already been agreed by
the two sides and conveyed to the
Indian side through a formal note from
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal
on 13 November 2014. The solemn tree plantation ceremony on
Wednesday, 10 December, 2014 was attended by senior members of the

Smartphone maker Xiaomi
launches smart air purifier
Chinese smartphone brand Xiaomi launched a smart air purifier on
Tuesday as it tries to tap into the growing market created by the China’s
hazardous air quality. Aside from traditional functions, the new Xiaomi
product can be connected to a smartphone, allowing users to remotely
control the device and receive air quality readings. According to
information from Xiaomi’s website, the device can learn air conditions
in real time and tell users when to turn on the device. It can also warn
users when the filter needs to be replaced. Selling at 899 yuan (145.3
US dollars), it can provide 406 cubic meters of clean air per hour.
Xiaomi also said the device can clean 99.3 percent of air particles less
than 2.5 micrometers (PM 2.5), the main contributor of China’s air
pollution and which are believed to pose great health risks to humans.
Worsening air quality in recent years has spurred the rise of air purifier
sales in Chinese cities, but some consumers complain effectiveness differs
between brands.

Nepali Tara 3 select Top 10 finalists
KATHMANDU: The temperature inside the Studio
4, Bhaisepati on December 3 was up not due to the
sun’s power but due to the tension the top 20
finalists of Nepali Tara 3 were feeling. It was the
day for them to either be selected to the Top 10 or
continue their journey, or to be out. The event
started with the signature song Gaaudaichhaun
Haami composed by singer/arranger Rajan Ishaan
where the 20 contestants divided into two groups
performed. Sung in a lok bhaka (folksy beat)
with a modern touch, the song was able to
reflect the aims of the contestants ‘to shine in
the musical sky’. And as the hosts of the show
Dharmendra Sewan and Santosh Lama started
calling the Top 20 contestants on stage, their
tension was visible on their faces, though
some managed to hide it. Akash Shrestha and
Dilip Lama were such contestants.
Among the 20 contestants Jaljala Pariyar,
Pratap Lama, Pratap Das, Vishal Atreya,
Sushma Bishwarkarma, Sudesh Subedi,
Swechchha Thakuri, Binod Rai, Suresh Lama
and Debesh Rai were selected as the Top 10
finalists. Those who didn’t make it through, sang
a last song at the event and ended their journey in
the singing competition.
Among those who gave their last performance
were Dilip Lama, Aarju Adhikari, Menuka Gahatraj,
Pragya Shree, Akash Shrestha, Gagan Phuyal,
Bikram Kalikote, Shristi Sunar, Mechu Dhimal and
Prakash Shrestha.
Shree, who wasn’t selected, didn’t feel that it was
the end. “This is not the end and I think I will be
selected in the next season of Nepali Tara. And for
that I must work hard from today,” she shared.

Nepali Tara 3 is telecast every Saturday on
Nepal Television at 8:00 pm, and its repeat
telecast is broadcast on Monday on Image
Channel at 9:00pm and on Nepal 1 at 9:00 pm

Indian film ‘Jal’ in running
for two Oscars
Girish Malik’s National Award winning film ‘Jal’ has found a
place in the Oscar contenders of 2014 in two categories — Best
Picture and Best Original Score.
The film, which has the backdrop of water scarcity and tells the
story of Bakka, a person gifted with a special ability to find
water in the desert, features in the
reminder list of productions eligible
for the 87th Academy Awards.
This apart, the film’s screenplay has
also been invited to the Oscar Library
for their permanent core collection.
“’Jal’ is in the race as one of the Oscar contenders in two most
prestigious categories – Best Picture and Best Original Score
alongside path-breaking films like ‘Interstellar’, ‘Exodus’, ‘300
Rise of Empire’ and other Hollywood biggies,” Puneet Singh,
director of One World Films Pvt Ltd, the film’s production banner,
told IANS. The film features Purab Kohli, Kirti Kulhari and
Tannishtha Chatterjee in prominent roles. Malik, who stepped
behind the camera for the first time with the film, says that it is
wonderful to get noticed on such a huge platform.
“’Jal’ has been shortlisted as one of the Oscar contenders in
the mainstream Best Picture category and not the Best Foreign
Language film category, which means it will be competing with
the Hollywood biggies to find a space for itself and hopefully
get noticed on this stupendous platform. “It was a tremendous
struggle to make this film and I am happy and thankful that it’s
being noticed on the biggest platform for cinema,” he said. The
music and background score for the film has been composed
by Sonu Nigam and Bickram Ghosh. The other Indian film
nominated for the Best Original score is ‘Kochadaiiyaan’, which
has compositions by A.R. Rahman. The double Oscar winner is
also nominated for two more of his Hollywood projects —
‘Million Dollar Arm’ and ‘The Hundred-Foot Journey’. The final
nomination list will be announced Jan 15, 2015, while the
presentation ceremony will be held Feb 22, 2015 at the Dolby
Theatre in Hollywood.

China economic growth may slow to 7.1
percent in 2015: central bank report
(Reuters) - China’s economic growth could slow to 7.1 percent in 2015
from an expected 7.4 percent this year, held back by a sagging property
sector, the central bank said in research report seen by Reuters on Sunday.
Stronger global demand
could boost exports, but
not by enough to
counteract the impact
from
weakening
property investment,
according to the report
published on the central
bank’s
website,
www.pbc.gov.cn.
China’s exports are
likely to grow 6.9
percent in 2015,
quickening from this
year’s 6.1 percent rise, while import growth is seen accelerating to 5.1
percent in 2015 from this year’s 1.9 percent, it said.
The report warned that the Federal Reserve’s expected move to raise
interest rates sometime next year could hit emerging-market economies.
Fixed-asset investment growth may slow to 12.8 percent in 2015 from
this year’s 15.5 percent, while retail sales growth may quicken to 12.2
percent from 12 percent, it said.
Consumer inflation may hold largely steady in 2015, at 2.2 percent, it
said.China’s economic growth weakened to 7.3 percent in the third quarter,
and November’s soft factory and investment figures suggest full-year
growth will miss Beijing’s 7.5 percent target and mark the weakest
expansion in 24 years.
Economists who advise the government have recommended that China
lower its growth target to around 7 percent in 2015. China’s employment
situation is likely to hold up well next year due to faster expansion of the
services sector, despite slower economic growth, said the report.
Drug addiction leads to darkness,
destruction, devastation - Narendra modi
Voicing concern over the “devastating” drug addiction menace, Prime
Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said society as well as the government
will have to work together
to fight this problem and
that a helpline would be set
up soon to assist those
seeking solutions.
In his third ‘Mann Ki Baat’
programme on radio, he
said the menace is a
“national pain” but instead
of the youth mired in the
problem, drugs should be
shunned. He said drug
addiction is “a malaise filled

ensure that the country is rid of this problem and added that he will try to

where everything is devastated. Drugs are such a devastation,” Modi
said in his broadcast to the nation. At the same time, he said, “drug addiction

said the family, friends, society, government and the law will have to work
together to fight it as working in pieces will not help.
He said he had asked his officials to set up a toll-free helpline soon to
assist those seeking answers to the problem. The Prime Minister also
suggested launching a special drive on social media against the menace.

Home is hell for 2 million Pak Ahmadis-1
More than two million Ahmadis
consider Pakistan as their home.
Pakistan, both the state and its
people, consider Ahmadis as kafirs
and treat them worse than other
minorities like Hindus and
Christians. Ahmadis are prosecuted
with state sanction, cannot aspire to
any political or government position
or leadership, cannot hope to
become rich and have always to live
in fear.
There is much to fear for Ahmadis
in Pakistan. Although Pakistan is
home to the largest concentration of
Ahmadis in the world, it has officially
declared them to non-Muslims, a
worse label than a minority Hindu
or Christian. The Pakistan
parliament, way back in 1974, had
made a law forbidding the Ahmadis
to follow Islamic pratices and
festivals as other Sunni and Shias
are permitted. Ahmadis cannot go
to non-ahmadi mosques, nor offer
prayer in public, cannot greet
anyone in the traditional Islamic way,
cannot quote from Quran, preach or
produce any material in any form
about their beliefs or any other
belief. If a Ahmadi were to caught
saying Assalmu alaikum, which
means peace be upon you, he could
be sentenced to three years of
imprisonment. All Pakistanis, filling
up official forms, have to state in
writing that they consider the
founder of Ahmadi sect, Mirza
Ghulam Ahmad as an impostor and
all Ahmadis to be non-Muslims.
Needless to say, they have no place
in the normal state activities like
elections. In 1985, the radical military
dictator Zia-ul Haq had banned
Ahmadis and other minorities from
voting, created a separate
electorate and imposed a condition
to participate in the elections—all of
them will have to declare that they
were non-muslims. In any case,
they could only vote for 5 per cent
seats reserved in National Assembly
for minorities.
The fact that Ahmadis stayed away
from the 2013 elections show how
deeply entrenched is this hatred
against a co-religionist in Pakistan.
Otherwise a liberal, at least he
projects himself to be such, Imran
Khan went out of his way to declare
that he would uphold all laws against
Ahmadis and would never seek the
support of Ahmadis for his political
party. In April this year, a bipartisan
group of US Congressmen wrote to
Secretary of State John Kerry that
the US must not accept the results
of the May elections if Ahmadis
were not given a fair place in the
electoral system. In a letter
endorsed by 33 Congressmen,
Republican Congressmen Frank
Wolf wrot : “I am deeply troubled
that Pakistans electoral system
discriminates on the basis of religion,
rendering the premise of free and
fair elections a sham…this
pernicious regime of discrimination
is relatively easy to change.”
The level of discrimination and social
ostracisation so pernicious that
ordinary Ahmadis cannot send their
children to good schools, nor can they
run small businesses or aspire for
public positions. Private schools
refuse Ahmadi children admission.
Ahmadis find it difficult to rent or
buy houses in non-Ahmadi localities.
They are not welcome in shopping
complexes or other public places if
their identity was found out. A recent
case of a Ahmadi businessman in
Gujranwala, a predominantly Sunni
town, is a telling illustration of how
discriminatory life is in Pakistan for
Ahmadis who consider the country
their home. A self-made man, Imran
Ahmad had been running a
woodwork shop in Gujranwala for
some years. He was a Ahmadi but
no one in the neighbourhood knew
about it. Nor did his worker and
customers. Then one day he met
with an accident and neighbours
came to his house to commiserate.
There they spotted portraits of
Ahmadi sect’s founder and related
literature and left home immediately.
Since then, his neighbours kept away
from him; his employees quit, and
shopkeepers refused to sell him
groceries.
Discrimination is not the only thing
which the Ahmadis have to face.
Ahmadi
businessmen
and
professionals face death threats and
often get killed. Asian Human Rights
Commission, in a September 2013
report, highlighted the continuing
killing of Ahmadis in Karachi. The
report cited three incidents—the
September 4 killing of a Ahmadi in
Orangi town in Karachi; the murder
of a Ahmadi homeopathic doctor in
Landhi, Karachi and the targeted
killing of Zahoor Ahmad Kayani on
August 21 this year. The report said:
“ These are the latest tragic
incidents which have become the
fate of Ahmadis in Pakistan.“
September also witnessed a series
of conferences organised by various
Sunni groups calling upon the state
to punish Ahmadis. The conferences
were organised to mark the 39 th
anniversary of the passage of
Second Amendment to Pakistan
Constitution which declared all
Ahmadis as non-Muslims. Speakers
after Speakers at these well attended
conferences called Ahmadis as
enemies of Pakistan, stooges of the
West and called upon the people to
hunt them down. The speakers
called for political and economic
boycott of the community and sought
a ban on their recruitment to
government and military.
One speaker, Pir Muhibullah Noori,
caretaker of Baseerpur, said
Ahmadis should be thrown out of
Pakistan. He said if Pakistani people
truly loved Prophet Muhammad, they
