BROOKLYN (13), HALEY (10) AND SYDNEY
(8) JONES of Crosby competed for the
Brainerd Elites Gymnastics team at the
Hollywood Stars Invitational in Brainerd. All
three compete on vault, uneven bars, balance
beam and floor. Brooklyn and Haley competed
on Team 1 in the Gold Division and the team
took first place. Sydney competes on team
three in the Silver Division and they placed second. Brooklyn also took first place in the allaround as an individual and Sydney was second in the all-around. Parents of the trio are
Bryan and Krista Jones.

against Joey Schmitz at 132 pounds in the
Ogilvie Tournament Saturday. Champagne won
the match and placed second individually to
help the Rangers to a sixth place team finish.
Portable tree stands
to be removed
Crow Wing County Land
Services is reminding hunters
that all portable tree stands and
all free standing stands must be
removed from county managed
public lands by Jan. 1.
The Crow Wing County
Hunting Stand Ordinance states
that portable tree stands must be
removed no later than one day
following the close of
Minnesota’s big game hunting
season, which ends on Dec. 31.
Permanent hunting stands are
prohibited by the ordinance.
Portable tree stands or
portable free standing stands
not removed from county managed public lands are considered abandoned personal property and will be removed pursuant to MN Statute 345.15 and
the Crow Wing County
Hunting Stand Ordinance.

lands. The purpose of the ordinance is to minimize damage to
trees, promote both public safety and equitable public use of

luncheon Jan. 17
The Merrifield Marathons
Snowmobile Club is having the
9th Annual Open House and
Free Trail Side Luncheon at the
Merrifield Marathon’s Center
on Saturday Jan. 17 from 11
a.m. to 3 p.m. The free trailside
luncheon will include brats, hot
dogs, beans, chips, cider and
hot chocolate.
The clubhouse, groomer
and trail drag will be on display.
See the equipment necessary to
make our trails great. Members
will be available to answer
questions and offer trail maps
and trail tips on finding the best
trails for your interest. The club
has weekly rides open to anyone and find out when the next
ride will take place.
The Marathon’s Center is
located on the Paul Bunyan
Trail in Merrifield or west side
of Highway 3 just one half mile
south of the Super America station.
Come by snowmobile or
auto and get acquainted, look
around, enjoy the outdoor fire
and a free trailside luncheon.

The Rangers scored 27 first

Sisler won the tournament
with C-I taking second place.

Winter fitness tip
Shovel to Slim: Shoveling
snow is a surefire way to work
up a sweat and burn off excess
calories. However, if you have
a history of heart problems,
high cholesterol, or are a smoker, proceed with caution, as
snow shoveling may cause a
quick increase in heart rate and
blood pressure. Push the snow
as you shovel, instead of lifting
it out of the way, to ease pressure on your back. If you must
lift, be sure to lift from your
legs and not your back, and
pick up small shovels of snow
at a time. Also take frequent
breaks to allow your heart rate
to level. Keeping these tips in
mind will help ensure an effective and safe workout.

The Rangers fell to Pierz
last Tuesday, 47-29. Maddie
Kovatovich, Heather Jordan
and Katjana Tauzell each tallied six points to lead the
Rangers.

Pierz Tournament last Monday
and Tuesday.
The Rangers opened with a
48-11 loss to Sauk Centre. Tori
DeCent scored six points to
lead the Rangers.
The Rangers fell to Pierz in
the second round last Tuesday,
59-12. Mariah Bodle and
DeCent each scored four
points in the loss.
The Lightning, 4-12 overall,
hosted Moose Lake yesterday
(Tuesday) and will play at
Eveleth-Gilbert
Thursday.
Tuesday, Hutchinson visits the
Lightning.

The Rangers opened with a
7-3 win over St. Paul Blades
Thursday. Brittney Knox tallied two goals and two assists
while Sam Gutzman added
two goals. Mariah Reed,
Isabella Abear and Chloe
Deutsch added the other
Lightning goals. Madison
Galligan tallied 13 saves in the
win.
Friday, the Lightning
defeated Marshall, 5-2 to
advance to the championship
game. Hannah Zimmerman
and Abear each had two goals
to lead the Lightning. Ashley
Kosloski tallied the other goal.
Galligan had 18 saves in the
win.
The Lightning fell to Cap
City, 5-2 in the title game.
Gutzman and Zimmerman tallied the goals for the Lightning
and Galligan had 27 saves in
the loss.
A FRED (Fathers Reading
Every Day) Event: Run and
Read will be held Monday, Jan.
19 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the
Cuyuna Range Elementary
School (CRES) main gym.
The evening will consist of
free play in the gym followed by
group games, book reading and a
featured story. Each family will
take home a copy of the featured
book for the evening. This fun
evening is intended for biological fathers, step-dads, grandpas,
uncles, family friends, mentors
or any other man involved in the
life of a kindergarten through
second grade child.
This FRED event is free, but
pre-registration is required.
Registration deadline is Jan. 13.
This FRED Program is
sponsored by the Crosby-Ironton
Community
Education
Department.

$2 for students, $5 for adults/seniors per event. (Students in grades
7-12 with a C-I student ID card no
admission fee is required).
Annual passes are available.
Prices are: Individual pass, $90;
Family pass, $175; Student pass,
$20; and Senior Citizen pass, $50.
Note: new this year, there will
not be a charge for musical concerts.
