New PAD treatment available at
Sacred Heart Hospital
S
acred Heart Hospital in Pensacola is now offering a
new treatment to re-open arteries in the legs that have
become narrowed or blocked due to peripheral artery
disease (PAD).
Sacred Heart became the first hospital in Northwest Florida
and only the second in Florida to use a new device, a drugcoated balloon catheter, to re-open clogged arteries and
keep them open. “This advance in technology increases the
likelihood that arteries blocked by PAD can be re-opened for
a longer period of time and we can prevent the most serious
complications of PAD,” says Dr. Rohit Amin, a Sacred Heart
specialist in interventional cardiology and peripheral vascular
disease and the first area physician to use the device. The most common symptom of PAD is leg pain when walking,
but the pain also may occur at night or even while resting. If
not treated, PAD can lead to severe blockages, lack of oxygen
to tissues, and painful sores and ulcers on the lower limbs. Left
untreated, the condition can lead to amputation of the toe,
foot and leg.
Treatments for PAD include vascular bypass surgery and
minimally invasive procedures in which a catheter is inserted
into the leg and blood flow is restored. The most common
procedure is angioplasty, where a tiny balloon is inserted
into a narrowed blood vessel and then inflated to push back
plaque and restore blood flow. Another technique is to
implant a tiny metal mesh tube or stent inside the narrowed
artery to prop open the artery. The metal mesh is left in the
artery and, in some cases, the artery can become clogged
again by a buildup of scar tissue around the stent. With the
new drug-coated balloon, the balloon applies the drug
paclitaxel to the artery wall.
“PAD is a painful, progressive disease. This new device is a
significant advance in our efforts to preserve limbs and allow
patients to walk without pain and, in some instances, avoid
having to use stents,” says Dr. Amin.
If you have symptoms of PAD, including painful leg cramping,
numbness or weakness in the legs, or burning or aching in the
toes or feet, see your primary care physician or cardiovascular
specialist.
For more information about the procedure performed
by Dr. Amin, call Sacred Heart Cardiovascular
Specialists, a department of Sacred Heart
Medical Group, at (850) 416-4970.
There are steps you can take
to reduce your risk for PAD.
See tips on page 2.
Reduce Your
Risk for PAD
You can reduce your risk for
Peripheral Artery Disease
(PAD). Following are some
tips from Dr. Rohit Amin, a
Sacred Heart specialist in
interventional cardiology
and peripheral vascular
disease:
Stop smoking. No ifs, ands
or butts. This is the No. 1 risk
factor for PAD and makes
you up to 25 times more
likely to develop the disease.
Take good care of your
diabetes. Type 2 diabetes
makes you up to four times
more likely to develop PAD.
Take care of your high blood
pressure. Get a check-up
at the doctor’s office. If you
have high blood pressure,
please follow your physician’s
recommendations. High
blood pressure can
eventually damage your
artery walls and can lead to
PAD.
Take care of high cholesterol.
The risk of PAD increases 5
to 10% with every 10 mg/dL
increase in total cholesterol
levels. High cholesterol is
caused by a combination
of genetics and unhealthy
lifestyle, but it can be
managed.
Age and ethnicity matters.
If you are 50 or older, you
should get your doctor’s
advice about a good diet,
exercise and daily routine.
African-Americans are at
highest risk for PAD.
Know your own history. If
someone in your family has
had PAD, there’s a greater
risk of it happening to you.
