Your thoughtfulness and generosity is overwhelming. I truly appreciated all the gifts and goodies that you kindly gave to me. Please know that I keep everyone in my prayers. It is my hope and prayer that everyone will have a blessed and healthy New Year. May God keep everyone in His care. This weekend, the Parish Council is trying something new. We are having a strata breakfast after the eight and ten o’clock Masses. All are welcome to come and share in this delicious breakfast. There will be French toast sticks for the children if they do not like the stratas. It is the hope of the Parish Council to bring the parish together and try to get to know the people you see at Mass, but never really have the opportunity to get to know. The breakfast is free, but there will be a free will donation basket there for anyone who would like to help feed the homeless or help with the organ restoration. I would really like to encourage everyone to please stop by, even if it is for just a few quick moments, and grab a glass of juice. I know that it is hard to believe, having just finished celebrating the holidays, that I am now going to start talking about Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras will be here before we know it. The date for this year’s Mardi Gras is February 14th. I know right, what a better way to spend Valentine’s Day with the person you love than at St. Thomas More’s Mardi Gras! Maybe you can even win your special someone a really nice prize. But if not, you will at least have fun and have a great dinner. I would like to let everyone know that tickets are going on sale this weekend after Masses and are available at the rectory and school office. The tickets are not expensive, but there is no skimping on the fun. Hope to see you there! Peace and Goodness, Fr. Bill TAX CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS If you would like a tax contribution statement for your 2014 donations, please contact the rectory at 216-7490414. Or send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the rectory to Lisa’s attention. January 11, 2015 SAINT OF THE WEEK St. John Neumann was born in what is now the Czech Republic. After studying in Prague, he came to New York at twenty-five and was ordained a priest. He did missionary work in New York until he was twenty-nine, when he joined the Redemptorists and became its first member to profess vows in the United States. He continued missionary work in Maryland, Virginia and Ohio, where he became popular with the Germans. At forty-one, as bishop of Philadelphia, he organized the parochial school system into a diocesan one, increasing the number of pupils almost twentyfold within a short time. Gifted with outstanding organizing ability, he drew into the city many teaching communities of sisters and the Christian Brothers. During his brief assignment as vice provincial for the Redemptorists, he placed them in the forefront of the parochial movement. Well-known for his holiness and learning, spiritual writing and preaching, on October 13, 1963, John Neumann became the first American bishop to be beatified. Canonized in 1977, he is buried in St. Peter the Apostle Church in Philadelphia. PARISH PRAYER O God, the Creator and giver of all things, bless this parish. Strengthen our faith; grant us the spirit of sacrifice and service so that, with Your grace, we may provide for the needs of our members, glorify You and sanctify ourselves. Through Christ Our Lord, Amen. PRAYER OF THE MONTH-JANUARY Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master; grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen. St. Thomas More Church DIVINE MERCY CHAPLET The Divine Mercy Chaplet is a powerful prayer that grants to us who pray it “unimaginable graces to those who trust in My mercy,” (Diary of St. Faustina, 687). In order to do so, we welcome you to join us for some home-cooking from the members of Parish Council for a strata breakfast. The PPC members would like to have an informal get-together to hear from the parish community about matters that are important to the parish. We look forward to seeing you. Bring your appetite! Donations graciously accepted to help feed the homeless and restore the church organ. ANNUAL MEMORIAL CANDLES In the month of November, we remembered our beloved dead. Why not remember them the whole year round? Memorial Candles are now available. The candles will have their names inscribed on them and will be lit the entire year. When the year is over, you may take the candle and place it in a special place in your home. The cost for a Memorial Candle is $200 for the year or $190 if you return your candle from November. You also have the option to have a candle displayed for six months (either January-June or JulyDecember) for $100. Forms are available at the rectory. PRE-PLAN FUNERAL INFORMATION If you are interested in planning your own funeral Mass, please contact the rectory. Lisa will contact one of the members of the Ministry of Consolation and they will contact you to set up a convenient time for you. Pre-Planning has many advantages. You are able to select your favorite readings and songs for your Mass. It also takes a lot of stress away from your loved ones. Please consider this option and call 216749-0414.
