The volume of business at the DeRuyter Post Office for the
Christmas trade was the largest in its history. On Monday,

January 18th, 2015 is the GSC’S annual and general
membership meeting at 1:00 pm. The public is invited to come
and enjoy the expertise of our guest speaker; retired DEC Forest
Ranger, Gary N. Lee of Inlet, NY. He now spends his time as
a licensed guide doing fishing, hiking, and birding trips in the
Adirondacks. With his experience of the great out of doors he
shares this through lectures on a variety of nature topics. He has
traveled extensively and has identified and photographed most
plants, animals, birds, snakes and butterflies on his journeys. He
has worked on the NYS Bird Breeding Atlas from 1980-1985 and
2000-2005.He is well known for banding birds at Crown Point
Banding Station. He bands birds at his home and has banded Gulls,
Cormorants, Black Crowned Night Herons, and Cattle Egrets on
Four Brothers Islands in Lake Champlain.
Gary helped with the first banding of Common Loons in NYS
(1998) and is a Loon expert. He has worked as a field observer for
theAdirondack Cooperative Loon Program which is in partnership
of the Wildlife Conservation Society, the Natural History Museum
of theAdirondacks, NYS DEC, Biodiversity Research Institute and
the Audubon Society of NY, Inc.. These groups monitor previously
banded Loons as to where they are nesting and productivity. Each
year they band, take blood and feather samples from these birds
to be tested during winter for mercury and other contaminates. In
the summer of 2003-2005, satellite transmitters were put on a few
birds to track them in their wintering areas.
With participation in the DEC Live Otter Trapping Program in
1999-2000 he captured for release 16 live Otters from an area to
a new safe location. This astounding man has received numerous
conservation awards, served on many conservation boards, author
of outdoor columns and co-author of Adirondack Birding 60
Places to Bird in the Adirondacks. This is a program you will not
want to miss!!!

makes 6 servings Change
Servings
1 1/2 cups dry black-eyed
peas
1 pound ham hocks
1 onion, chopped
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
salt and pepper to taste
4 cups water
1 1/2 cups long-grain white rice
1 cup shredded smoked Cheddar cheese
Directions
1.In a large pan place the peas, ham hock, onion, red pepper,
salt and pepper. Cover with water and bring to a boil. Reduce
heat to medium-low and cook for 1 1/2 hours.
2.Remove ham hock and cut meat into pieces. Return meat
to pot. Stir in the rice, cover and cook until rice is tender, about
20 to 25 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Sprinkle
shredded cheese over top, if desired. Serve

New Non-invasive Method Can
Detect Alzheimer’s Disease Early

No methods currently exist for the early detection of
Alzheimer’s disease, which affects one out of nine people over
the age of 65. Now, an interdisciplinary team of Northwestern
University scientists and engineers has developed a noninvasive
MRI approach that can detect the disease in a living animal.
And it can do so at the earliest stages of the disease, well before
typical Alzheimer’s symptoms appear.
Led by neuroscientist William L. Klein and materials
scientist Vinayak P. Dravid, the research team developed an
MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) probe that pairs a magnetic
nanostructure (MNS) with an antibody that seeks out the
amyloid beta brain toxins responsible for onset of the disease.
The accumulated toxins, because of the associated magnetic
nanostructures, show up as dark areas in MRI scans of the brain.

This ability to detect the molecular toxins may one day enable
scientists to both spot trouble early and better design drugs or
therapies to combat and monitor the disease. And, while not
the focus of the study, early evidence suggests the MRI probe
improves memory, too, by binding to the toxins to render them
“handcuffed” to do further damage.
“We have a new brain imaging method that can detect the
toxin that leads to Alzheimer’s disease,” said Klein, who first
identified the amyloid beta oligomer in 1998. He is a professor
of neurobiology in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences.
“Using MRI, we can see the toxins attached to neurons in
the brain,” Klein said. “We expect to use this tool to detect this
disease early and to help identify drugs that can effectively
eliminate the toxin and improve health.”
With the successful demonstration of the MRI probe,
Northwestern researchers now have established the molecular
basis for the cause, detection by non-invasive MR imaging
and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Dravid introduced this
magnetic nanostructure MRI contrast enhancement approach for
Alzheimer’s following his earlier work utilizing MNS as smart
nanotechnology carriers for targeted cancer diagnostics and
therapy. (A MNS is typically 10 to 15 nanometers in diameter;
one nanometer is one billionth of a meter.)
Details of the new Alzheimer’s disease diagnostic are
published by the journal Nature Nanotechnology. Klein and
Dravid are co-corresponding authors.
The emotional and economic impacts of Alzheimer’s disease
are devastating. This year, the direct cost of the disease in
the United States is more than $200 billion, according to the
Alzheimer’s Association’s “2014 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts
and Figures.” By the year 2050, that cost is expected to be $1.1

trillion as baby boomers age. And these figures do not account
for the lost time of caregivers.
This new MRI probe technology is detecting something
different from conventional technology: toxic amyloid beta
oligomers instead of plaques, which occur at a stage of
Alzheimer’s when therapeutic intervention would be very
late. Amyloid beta oligomers now are widely believed to be
the culprit in the onset of Alzheimer’s disease and subsequent
memory loss.
In a diseased brain, the mobile amyloid beta oligomers attack
the synapses of neurons, destroying memory and ultimately
resulting in neuron death. As time progresses, the amyloid
beta builds up and starts to stick together, forming the amyloid
plaques that current probes target. Oligomers may appear more
than a decade before plaques are detected.
“Non-invasive imaging by MRI of amyloid beta oligomers is
a giant step forward towards diagnosis of this debilitating disease
in its earliest form,” said Dravid, the Abraham Harris Professor
of Materials Science and Engineering at the McCormick School
of Engineering and Applied Science.
There is a major need for what the Northwestern research team
is doing -- identifying and detecting the correct biomarker for
new drug discovery. Despite extraordinary efforts, no effective
drugs exist yet for Alzheimer’s disease.
“This MRI method could be used to determine how well a
new drug is working,” Dravid said. “If a drug is effective, you
would expect the amyloid beta signal to go down.”
The nontoxic MRI probe was delivered intranasally to mouse
models with Alzheimer’s disease and control animals without
the disease. In animals with Alzheimer’s, the toxins’ presence
can be seen clearly in the hippocampus in MRI scans of the
brain. No dark areas, however, were seen in the hippocampus
of the control group.
The ability to detect amyloid beta oligomers, Klein said,
is important for two reasons: amyloid beta oligomers are the
toxins that damage neurons, and the oligomers are the first
sign of trouble in the disease process, appearing before any
other pathology.

Klein, Dravid and their colleagues also observed that the
behavior of animals with Alzheimer’s improved even after
receiving a single dose of the MRI probe.
“While preliminary, the data suggests the probe could be
used not only as a diagnostic tool but also as a therapeutic,” said
Kirsten L. Viola, a co-first author of the study and a research
manager in Klein’s laboratory.
Along with the studies in live animals, the research team
also studied human brain tissue from Northwestern’s Cognitive
Neurology and Alzheimer’s Disease Center. The samples were
from individuals who died from Alzheimer’s and those who
did not have the disease. After introducing the MRI probe,
the researchers saw large dark areas in the Alzheimer brains,
indicating the presence of amyloid beta oligomers.
The title of the paper is “Towards non-invasive diagnostic
imaging of early-stage Alzheimer’s disease.”

Link Between Pacific Winds,
Global Climate

New research indicates that shifts in Pacific trade winds
played a key role in twentieth century climate variation, a sign
that they may again be influencing global temperatures.
The study, led by scientists at the National Center for
Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the University of Arizona
(UA), uses a novel method of analyzing chemical changes in
coral to show that weak tropical Pacific trade winds coincided
with globally warming temperatures early in the twentieth
century. When the natural pattern shifted and winds began to
strengthen after 1940, the warming slowed.
The finding gives support to the theory that strong Pacific
trade winds are currently helping to prevent global temperatures
from climbing, even as society continues to emit carbon dioxide
and other greenhouse gases. When the winds weaken as part
of a natural cycle, warming will likely resume once again, the
authors say.

“Strong winds in the tropical Pacific are playing a role in the
slowdown of warming over the past 15 years,” said lead author
Diane Thompson, a postdoctoral scientist at NCAR. “When the
winds inevitably change to a weaker state, warming will start
to accelerate again.”
“Mother Nature is always going to inject little ups and downs
along our path to a warmer world,” said University of Arizona
professor Julia Cole, a co-author. “We’re trying to understand
how those natural variations work so that scientists can do a
better job of predicting the actual course of climate change
into the future.”
The study is being published this week in Nature Geoscience.
It was funded by the National Science Foundation, NCAR’s
sponsor, as well as by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration, University of Arizona, Philanthropic Education
Organization, U.K. Natural Environment Research Council,
and U.S. Department of Energy.
Where is the heat going?
Despite increases in greenhouse gases, global surface
temperatures have not risen significantly since 2001. This
pause in global warming, often called the hiatus, has become
the focus of research by climate scientists who are trying to
track the missing heat.
By using climate models and observations, scientists are
finding evidence that the heat is going into the subsurface ocean,
perhaps as a result of changes in atmospheric circulation. A study

winds along the equator in the Pacific Ocean that are driving
heat into the ocean while bringing cooler water to the surface.
This is leaving less heat in the air, thereby temporarily offsetting
warming from increasing greenhouse gases.
The study by Thompson and her colleagues indicates that
this process has happened before, and in the opposite direction:
weaker winds allowed warming to accelerate.
The research team focused on the early twentieth century -- a
time when a third of the century’s global warming took place,
even though major accumulations of greenhouse gases were
not yet occurring. Some previous research suggested that rising
sea-surface temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean were to blame.
That warming did not begin until the mid-1920s, however, when
the global atmospheric warming was already well underway.
As it turned out, the researchers had access to an important
piece of evidence. Sitting in a UA lab was an old core drawn
from a coral skeleton near a western tropical Pacific island. It
had been chemically analyzed in the 1990s and then largely
forgotten.
Thompson, while working on her doctoral dissertation,
realized that the core could reveal tropical Pacific wind patterns
during the period from 1894 to 1982 when it had grown just
outside of the island’s lagoon.
The reason has to do with the effects of wind on water
chemistry. When strong bursts of wind came in from the west,
they stirred up manganese in the sediment at the bottom of
the lagoon. The local corals took up the manganese in their
skeletons as they grew. Such wind bursts from the west occur
more commonly when the trade winds, which normally blow
from the east, are weak.

Food Safety Modernization Act: Round 2
In September, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
released re-proposed sections of major new food safety
regulations that were originally proposed in January of 2013.
The rules are part of FDA’s implementation of the Food Safety
Modernization Act (FSMA), which was signed into law in
2011. The goal of FSMA is to focus food safety measures
on prevention, rather than emergency response. It does so by
updating and expanding rules that govern the growing and
handling of fresh produce and the processing of many types of
food. The FDA’s first draft of FSMA rules unfairly burdened
the local and regional food businesses and farmers that have
been the driving force behind the exponential growth of farmers
markets across the U.S.
This second round of proposed rules came in response to
the food and farming community’s active participation in the
FDA’s public comment period last fall. Despite improvements,
the updated set of rules continues to overburden and discourage
diversified, direct-marketing farmers and markets.

Chemical analysis of the yearly banded coral skeleton showed
a comparatively high occurrence of these spikes in manganese
to calcium from about 1910 to 1940--the same period when
Earth experienced significant warming. However, the number
of these events dropped between the 1940s and 1970s, when
temperatures leveled off.
Thompson and her co-authors compared the ratio to wind
observations since 1960, when observations became more
reliable, and verified that the high manganese-to-calcium
ratio correlated with weaker trade winds. They also combed
through more scattered records before 1960 and again found
a correlation of the chemical ratio to wind strength.
Thompson stressed that the winds are just one contributor
to changes in global climate. Another reason that temperatures
leveled off in mid-century likely has to do with increased
industrialization and emissions of particles that block sunlight
and exert a cooling influence. Later in the century, increased
emissions of greenhouse gases played a dominant role.
“This research shows that the influence of winds on climate is
not anything new. These mechanisms have been at work earlier,”
Thompson said. “We believe this is a significant contribution
to understanding the role of natural processes in modulating
global temperature change.”

An Introduction to High Tunnels
Monday, February 9, from 1-4 PM at Good Life Farm in
Interlaken. Topics to be covered include - types of tunnels &
construction, bed preparation, crops to grow, managing crops
in high tunnels, and pest management. Tour Good Life Farm
Tunnels. Instructors include: Judson Reid - CCE Vegetable Crop
Specialist (and high tunnel expert); farmers Melissa Madden and
Garrett Miller with Good Life Farm and Evangeline Sarat with
Sweetland Farm. Information on NRCS High Tunnel Grants
will be presented by a NRCS representative. Register for this
workshop via Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County. Call

The Northeastern IPM Center recently hosted a discussion on
the topic of pollinators in a live-streamed web event: “Integrated
Pest Management (IPM) and Pollinators: What is the appropriate
role for IPM on the issue of pollinators?” The Northeastern
IPM Center invited speakers from the USDA Agricultural
Research Service, the Natural Resources Defense Council,
USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture, and the US
Environmental Protection Agency. In the recording, panelists
provide an update on current issues surrounding pollinator
health. They share facts about pollinators and pollinator decline,
and give some thought to the role that the integrated pest
management community, as well as scientific experts, public
officials, and citizens, should take to address it. The event took
place November 12, 2014, as part of the Northeastern IPM
Center Advisory Council meeting in the Washington, D.C. area.

“Because there is a deadly desert all around that fairy country,
which no one is able to cross. You know that fact as well as I
do, your Majesty. Never mind the lost Belt. You have plenty
of power left, for you rule this underground kingdom like a
tyrant, and thousands of Nomes obey your commands. I advise
you to drink a glass of melted silver, to quiet your nerves, and
then go to bed.”
The King grabbed a big ruby and threw it at Kaliko’s head.
The Steward ducked to escape the heavy jewel, which crashed
against the door just over his left ear.
“Get out of my sight! Vanish! Go away--and send General
Blug here,” screamed the Nome King.
Kaliko hastily withdrew, and the Nome King stamped up
and down until the General of his armies appeared.
This Nome was known far and wide as a terrible fighter and
a cruel, desperate commander. He had fifty thousand Nome
soldiers, all well drilled, who feared nothing but their stern
master. Yet General Blug was a trifle uneasy when he arrived
and saw how angry the Nome King was.
“Ha! So you’re here!” cried the King.
“So I am,” said the General.
“March your army at once to the Land of Oz, capture and
destroy the Emerald City, and bring back to me my Magic
Belt!” roared the King.
“You’re crazy,” calmly remarked the General.
