Stir until rice is toasted and lightly browned, then return veggies and chicken to pan. 5.Lower heat to medium and add white wine. Cook until wine is almost evaporated, stirring frequently. 6.1/2-2/3 cup at a time, add chicken stock, stirring frequently and replenishing liquids once mixture is dry enough that spoon leaves a track through the rice. 7.When chicken stock is completely absorbed, taste rice and see if it’s tender enough. Risotto should be thick, but still able to spread out a little. [You want it to be al dente, but if it’s too crunchy, add 1 cup water (a bit at a time). Adding too much will make your risotto gummy.] 8.Serve hot and garnish with Parmesan cheese. Recipe adapted from Sweet C’s Designs Joy Comes From Being In Christ It’s natural for people to be happy when things go well. But the Christian’s joy doesn’t come from earthly circumstances, it comes from being “in Christ” (Rom 15:17). Christians think more of their Lord than their difficulties; more of their spiritual riches in Christ than their poverty on earth; more of the glorious future when their Lord should come again than of their unhappy past. Ask for Jim Apply Owahgena Pizza 118 Albany St., Cazenovia, NY James T Johnson A young man went to seek an important position at a large printing company. He passed the initial interview and was going to meet the director for the final interview. The director saw his resume, it was excellent. And asked, ‘ - Have you received a scholarship for school?’ The boy replied, “ No ‘. -’ It was your father who paid for your studies? ‘ -’ Yes.’- He replied. -’ Where does your father work? ‘ -’ My father is a Blacksmith’ The Director asked the young to show him his hands. The young man showed a pair of hands soft and perfect. -’ Have you ever helped your parents at their job? ‘ -’ Never, my parents always wanted me to study and read more books. Besides, he can do the job better than me. The director said: -’ I have got a request: When you go home today, go and wash the hands of your father and then come see me tomorrow morning.’ The young man felt his chance to get the job was high. When he returned to his house he asked his father if he would allow him to wash their hands. His father felt strange, happy, but with mixed feelings and showed their hands to his son. The young washed his hands, little by little. It was the first time that he noticed his father’s hands were wrinkled and they had so many scars. Some bruises were so painful that his skin shuddered when he touched them. This was the first time that the young man recognized what it meant for this pair of hands to work every day to be able to pay for his study. The bruises on the hands were the price that he payed for their education, his school activities and his future. After cleaning his father’s hands the young man stood in silence and began to tidy and clean up the workshop. That night, father and son talked for a long time. The Director noticed the tears in the eyes of the young when He asked him: -’ Can you tell me what you did and what you learned yesterday at your house?’ The boy replied: -’ I washed my father’s hands and when I finished I stayed and cleaned his workshop ‘ -’ Now I know what it is to appreciate and recognize that without my parents , I would not be who I am today . By helping my father I now realize how difficult and hard it is to do something on my own. I have come to appreciate the importance and the value in helping the family. The director said, “This is what I look for in my people. I want to hire someone who can appreciate the help of others , a person who knows the hardship of others to do things, and a person who does not put money as his only goal in life”. ‘ You are hired ‘. A child that has been coddled, Protected and usually given him what he wants, develops a mentality of “ I have the right ‘ and will always put himself first, ignoring the efforts of their parents. If we are this type of protective parent are we really showing love or are we destroying our children? You can give your child a big house , good food , computer classes , watch on a big screen TV . But when you’re washing the floor or painting a wall , please let him experience that too. After eating have them wash the dishes with their brothers and sisters. It is not because you have no money to hire someone to do this it’s because you want to love them the right way . No matter how rich you are, you want them to understand. One day your hair will have gray hair, like the father of this young man. The most important thing is that your child learns to appreciate the effort and to experience the difficulties and learn the ability to work with others to get things done. “ FULLY INSURED MDM Landscaping RESIDENTIAL COMMERCIAL Edging Landscaping Mulching Lawn Mowing [email protected] C: 315-560-0947 Spring/Fall Cleanup Patios H: 315-662-3013 Driveway Retaining Walls New Lawn installation Thank you for considering us Repair/Installation for your landscaping needs. Earth Day Textile Recycling Event Earth Day is Wednesday April 22. The Madison County Landfill will host a county-wide textile recycling event to celebrate. Textiles will be collected at ten sites throughout the county making it easy for residents to recycle their textiles. Any textile item, even if it’s worn, torn or stained can be recycled as long as it is clean or dry. “There is a misconception that textiles must be in wearable condition to be donated,” said Mary Bartlett, Recycling Coordinator at the Madison County Landfill. “Actually, textiles can be recycled even if they are not in condition for resale.” However, rugs, carpeting and bed pillows will not be accepted. Textiles will be collected at the following sites and times on Wednesday April 22: Brookfield: 1 pm – 3 pm Brookfield Historical Society, 10556 Main Street Tim Janczuk, Owner The Earlville Galleries are now accepting proposals for solo artist exhibitions for the 2016 season. The Earlville Galleries annually present 14 solo exhibitions of regional and national contemporary visual artists in all media. High quality work by professional and emerging artists who live part-time or full-time in the Central New York region is given priority, but artists from other areas of New York and other states are also considered. The deadline for submissions is Friday, May 1, 2015. Digital submissions are preferred, but slides are also accepted. All media and styles are considered, as are installations and proposals by curators. Email submissions are not accepted. Detailed submission guidelines and instructions can be found under the Artists & Musicians tab on the EOH website at earlvilleoperahouse.com. (direct link: http://bit.ly/1MkDk4P ) A professional panel juries all submissions, and for each exhibit the Earlville Galleries provide publicity, invitations to the show and reception, a printed list of the work on exhibit, an artist’s statement or resume, and insurance of the artwork while on exhibit. Artwork can be for sale or not, and EOH collects commission and sales tax on all sales. The Earlville Galleries are an integral part of the multi-arts programming at the Earlville Opera House and are funded, in part, by the New York State Council on the Arts. Gallery hours are 10-5 Tues-Fri and 12-3 on Saturdays. The Galleries are also open during all performances in the historic theater. Gallery diagrams are available upon request. PHONE/FAX (315) 852-6254 BOWDEN PLUMBING & HEATING 27 Years Experience SERVING CAZENOVIA AREA -8- Hi, Neighbor Pennysaver, Cazenovia, NY, March 30, 2015 PO Box 51, DeRuyter, NY 13052 From the Street to the Gallery: The Art of Tony Thompson Tony Thompson is an emerging artist with a unique vision, an unusual history, and a back-story that would have derailed most young artists. Now residing in Utica, Tony Thompson was born in Lynchburg, VA, and raised in Syracuse. The classroom in his early years was a source of anxiety, and to escape this discomfort, he began to draw. Drawing became a way to express thoughts and feelings that could not find their way into words. On his way to school every day, he passed graffiti and artwork created by the Syracuse street artists scene. Its influence eventually found its way into his drawings. Today his work usually involves combinations of screenprinting, spray paint, and paint marker. The early influences and themes of his work can be seen in his surreal urban imagery, which often contains spray paint cans and caps as a totem of respect for his background in graffiti – a reminder of the path less chosen that worked for him. Relatively new to the gallery scene, Thompson is a young man on the cutting edge of artistic expression, someone very aware of his journey and its context, whose art pays homage to that path and others still traveling it. The Earlville Galleries are pleased to show the exciting work of Tony Thompson in the Arts Café Gallery from March 21 – May 9. Titled “Cloud Physics,” the exhibit chronicles his fascination with and depiction of clouds over the years, from his street art days to the present. “As a symbol, I have always used the cloud as content or a tool, but never as a focal point. This show focuses on the symbol of the cloud.” Admission is free. The Opera House is wheelchair-accessible with a ramp and a lift. Israel: The Enemy Of My Enemy Is My Friend March 6, 2015: As Egypt prepares to face the growing ISIL threat in Libya it is withdrawing some special operations forces from Sinai. Israel fears this will reduce the pressure the Egyptians have exerted on Sinai based Islamic terrorists. Israel has been impressed with the Egyptian counter-terror campaign in Sinai, which has, for the moment, eliminated the threat of Islamic terrorist attacks on Israel from Sinai. Egypt recently reported that 172 Islamic terrorists had been killed in Sinai during February. Another 229 suspects were arrested and 85 Islamic terrorist locations were raided. All this activity was in reaction to January 29th when ISIL made four attacks in Sinai that left at 33 dead and 90 wounded. Most of the victims were soldiers and police. In part these attacks were to show that the Islamic terrorists were still present and dangerous. But not as dangerous as the used to be or could have been, The 18 month old Egyptian counter-terrorism campaign in Sinai has left over 1,500 Islamic terrorists dead and several thousand arrested. About 500 soldiers and police have died as well.. This has prevented these Islamic terrorist groups from taking their violence into the rest of Egypt and gradually diminished DeRuyter Farm & Garden Coop 315-852-3316 BIO LOGIC PRODUCTS ON SALE ed Select @ 30% OFF while supplies last Contact Us: FAX or Phone 315-655-9431, E-mail: [email protected] or Our Website www.hineighbor.net HAPPY APRIL FOOL’S DAY & OPENING DAY TROUT SEASON - MAR. 30 Alaska Purchased from the Russian Empire (1867), Pencil with Eraser Patented (1858) - MAR. 31 - First Map of the US Published (1784) NOW Taking Classified Ads ONLINE!!! www.hineighbor.net Have Your Ad Written & Your Credit or Debit Card READY!!! the terrorist violence in Sinai. The Islamic terrorists claim victory because some of them have survived all this mayhem and continue to kill. At the same time the Islamic terrorists in Sinai are not associated with the Moslem Brotherhood that dominates the rest of Egypt. Indeed the Sinai Islamic terrorists look down on the Moslem Brotherhood as a bunch of wimps. The Sinai groups are more into the old-school, hard-core al Qaeda/ISIL approach. The Sinai crowd wants open warfare with Egypt and Islamic religious dictatorship for Egypt and eventually the world. Israel does not believe Egypt will abandon Sinai but by taking the special operations troops out the counter-terror effort will be less effective and the less experienced troops and police left in Sinai will suffer heavier casualties. The Egyptians feel they have no choice because it ISIL wants to send Islamic terrorists into Egypt the thousand kilometer long Libyan border is easily crossed. Fortunately anyone sneaking across still has several hundred kilometers of desert to cross and that area has few roads. But it takes a lot of troops to lock all that down and for the moment the Libyan border has a higher priority than Sinai. Over 30,000 Egyptians have left Libya in the last two weeks to escape the growing Islamic terrorist violence. This flight was triggered by a February 15th ISIL video showing 20 Egyptian Christians (Copts) being beheaded on a Libyan beach. Many Egyptians still work in Libya doing jobs Libyans will not or cannot do and being paid for with oil income. Before the 2011 revolution about a million Egyptians worked in Libya. But the growing chaos in Libya has sharply cut oil production and many Egyptians are returning because they are losing their jobs or 65 YEARS AGO 65 years ago - From the DeRuyter Gleaner, Feb. 15, 1950 According to a notice received from the Post Office Dept. at Washington, D.C. Since mid-February Egypt has declared war on ISIL but has not carried out any more air strikes against ISIL targets in Libya since mid-February. It does appear that Egypt is preparing for another round of attacks. In Egypt (northern Sinai) over a hundred Copts (Christians) have fled the area after they received threats from Islamic terror groups. There are still about 200 Copts living in northern Sinai. With Hamas now outlawed in Egypt the security on the Gaza border has become even tighter. This includes increased efforts to find and destroy smuggling tunnels and halt any illegal border crossings. Egypt is still on bad terms with Qatar, whose monarch finances the al Jazeera satellite news network and supported the ousted Moslem Brotherhood government. Egypt also accuses Qatar of supporting Islamic terrorists in Libya and Hamas in Gaza. Now Qatar has recalled its ambassador from Egypt over the escalating dispute. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the UAE (United Arab Emirates) support the new military government in Egypt but want laws passed to help protect the billions of dollars in investment Gulf state investors are willing to make in Egypt. The Egyptian war against the Moslem Brotherhood has done a lot of damage to this nationwide organization. The Brotherhood owned a lot of businesses and social welfare organizations and these have largely been seized or shut down. Yet the Brotherhood continues to survive, mainly because the Brotherhood was intent on doing something about the corruption and government inefficiency. Unfortunately, the Brotherhood has an extremist wing that always demands extremist solutions and that always causes problems with the government and most Egyptians. On the Syrian border Israel is working more with Syrian rebels (except ISIL) to help stop Iran from establishing a presence in the area so they can launch attacks into Israel. Iran is also bringing in thousands of additional Iranian volunteers to join rebel militias in the fight against the rebels. Naturally the rebels oppose this Iranian effort and now see Israel as an ally. Israel has provided support for the rebels with the understanding that the rebels would not attack Israel and would help prevent anyone else from doing so. Thus Israel stays in contact with the Syrian rebels across its border, provides medical treatment (for over 2,000 rebels and civilians so far) and attacks Hezbollah and Syrian Army targets when there is any fire into Israel from the Syrian side. The rebels often provide Israel with data on where hidden Syrian Army or Hezbollah units are, providing Israeli warplanes and artillery with precise and conformed targets. While some of these “cooperative rebels” are Islamic radicals and will eventually turn on Israel if given a chance, for the moment the policy is “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.” The U.S. and Israel are divided by what the Israelis see as an American effort to reduce pressure on Iran over the Iranian nuclear program in return for more cooperation in defeating ISIL. The Arab countries openly back Israel in this dispute and fear America might leave them at the mercy of a nucleararmed Iran. March 5, 2015: The Palestinian government (PLO) in the West Bank has decided to stop security cooperation with Israel. This is in response to Israel withholding tax payments. That was in response to the PLO trying to join the ICC (International Criminal Court) so that it could better agitate for prosecuting Israel for war crimes (basically anything Israel does to defend itself against Palestinian terrorism). The withholding of $127 million a month makes it impossible to pay the many PLO civil servants. It’s these thousands of jobs that keeps the PLO in business because otherwise Palestinians regard the PLO leadership as corrupt and inefficient. These are seen regularly being test fired out into the Mediterranean. Even the aid groups there have seen all this diversion of resources and complained about it. Hamas ignores the complaints and continues preparing for another war despite the fact that these complaints mean a lot of groups who pledged rebuilding money are refusing to deliver until assured that the cash will be used for rebuilding. March 3, 2015: In Egypt (Cairo) three bombs went off. One of the explosions was outside a court building and that killed two people. The other explosions caused no casualties. There were a similar series of small bomb attacks on February 26 that left one person dead. All these bombs were crudely made and may have all come from one radical group that does not have access to powerful explosives or an expert bomb builder. An Egyptian court ordered members of Hamas arrested and Hamas assets seized. This comes a week after Egypt declared Hamas a terrorist organization. Hamas called on other Arab states to protest and attempt to reverse what Egypt was doing. For the moment that isn’t happening. Another court suspended the March 22 parliamentary elections until arguments over how election districts will be set up can be settled. Egypt has not had a functioning parliament since 2012 when a court shut it down after deciding that a third of the members were elected illegally. This gives the security forces wide and unhindered authority to declare a group “terrorists” and then easily arrest and keep in custody members of these groups. Many Egyptians fear these new powers will be abused and include anyone who opposes the government. Also worrying is the inability of the courts to convict any of the Mubarak era officials of corruption and to reverse convictions obtained before the military coup in 2012. Eighty years after the discovery of the neutron, a team of physicists from France, Germany, and Hungary headed by Zoltán Fodor, a researcher from Wuppertal, has finally calculated the tiny neutron-proton mass difference. The findings, which have been published in the current edition of Science, are considered a milestone by many physicists and confirm the theory of the strong interaction. As one of the most powerful computers in the world, JUQUEEN at Forschungszentrum Jülich was decisive for the simulation. The existence and stability of atoms relies heavily on the fact that neutrons are slightly more massive than protons. The experimentally determined masses differ by only around 0.14 percent. A slightly smaller or larger value of the mass •Roofing •Siding •Decks •Kitchens, Baths Windows & Doors Interior & Exterior Trim Work Pole Barn Structures •Additions Darren Perry - Fully Insured 315-720-9914 - SNOW PLOWING - difference would have led to a dramatically different universe, with too many neutrons, not enough hydrogen, or too few heavier elements. The tiny mass difference is the reason why free neutrons decay on average after around ten minutes, while protons -- the unchanging building blocks of matter -- remain stable for a practically unlimited period. In 1972, about 40 years after the discovery of the neutron by Chadwick in 1932, Harald Fritzsch (Germany), Murray GellMann (USA), and Heinrich Leutwyler (Switzerland) presented a consistent theory of particles and forces that form the neutron and the proton known as quantum chromodynamics. Today, we know that protons and neutrons are composed of “up quarks” and “down quarks.” The proton is made of one down and two up quarks, while the neutron is composed of one up and two down quarks. Simulations on supercomputers over the last few years confirmed that most of the mass of the proton and neutron results from the energy carried by their quark constituents in accordance with Einstein’s formula E=mc2. However, a small contribution from the electromagnetic field surrounding the electrically charged proton should make it about 0.1 percent more massive than the neutral neutron. The fact that the neutron mass is measured to be larger is evidently due to the different masses of the quarks, as Fodor and his team have now shown in extremely complex simulations. For the calculations, the team developed a new class of simulation techniques combining the laws of quantum chromodynamics with those of quantum electrodynamics in order to precisely determine the effects of electromagnetic interactions. By controlling all error sources, the scientists successfully demonstrated how finely tuned the forces of nature are. Professor Kurt Binder is Chairman of the Scientific Council of the John von Neumann Institute for Computing (NIC) and member of the German Gauss Centre for Supercomputing. Both organizations allocate computation time on JUQUEEN to users in a competitive process. “Only using world-class computers, such as those available to the science community at Forschungszentrum Jülich, was it possible to achieve this milestone in computer simulation,” says Binder. JUQUEEN was supported in the process by its “colleagues” operated by the French science organizations CNRS and GENCI as well as by the computing centres in Garching (LRZ) and Stuttgart (HLRS). The results of this work by Fodor’s team of physicists from Bergische Universität Wuppertal, Centre de Physique Théorique de Marseille, Eötvös University Budapest, and Forschungszentrum Jülich open the door to a new generation of simulations that will be used to determine the properties of quarks, gluons, and nuclear particles. According to Professor Kálmán Szabó from Forschungszentrum Jülich, “In future, we will be able to test the standard model of elementary particle physics with a tenfold increase in precision, which could possibly enable us to identify effects that would help us to uncover new physics beyond the standard model.” Story Source: The above story is based on materials provided by Forschungszentrum Juelich. The Edith in the passenger seat thought to herself “I must be losing it, I could have sworn we just went through a red light.” After a few more minutes they came to another intersection and the light was red again and again they went right though. This time Edith was almost sure that the light had been red but was really concerned that she was losing it. She was getting nervous and decided to pay very close attention to the road and the next intersection to see what was going on. At the next intersection, sure enough, the light was definitely red and they went right through and she turned to the Marie and said, “Marie! Then it would seem more natural to Uncle Henry and Aunt Em.” “No; they shall first see me in my Throne Room,” replied Ozma, decidedly; and when she spoke in that tone Dorothy knew it was not wise to oppose her, for Ozma was accustomed to having her own way. So together they went to the Throne Room, an immense domed chamber in the center of the palace. Here stood the royal throne, made of solid gold and encrusted with enough precious stones to stock a dozen jewelry stores in our country. Ozma, who was wearing the Magic Belt, seated herself in the throne, and Dorothy sat at her feet. In the room were assembled many ladies and gentlemen of the court, clothed in rich apparel and wearing fine jewelry. Two immense animals squatted, one on each side of the throne--the Cowardly Lion and the Hungry Tiger. In a balcony high up in the dome an orchestra played -12- Hi, Neighbor Pennysaver, Cazenovia, NY, March 30, 2015 sweet music, and beneath the dome two electric fountains sent sprays of colored perfumed water shooting up nearly as high as the arched ceiling. “Are you ready, Dorothy?” asked the Ruler. “I am,” replied Dorothy; “but I don’t know whether Aunt Em and Uncle Henry are ready.” “That won’t matter,” declared Ozma. “The old life can have very little to interest them, and the sooner they begin the new life here the happier they will be. Here they come, my dear!” As she spoke, there before the throne appeared Uncle Henry and Aunt Em, who for a moment stood motionless, glaring with white and startled faces at the scene that confronted them. If the ladies and gentlemen present had not been so polite I am sure they would have laughed at the two strangers. Aunt Em had her calico dress skirt “tucked up,” and she wore a faded, blue-checked apron. Her hair was rather straggly and she had on a pair of Uncle Henry’s old slippers. In one hand she held a dish-towel and in the other a cracked earthenware plate, which she had been engaged in wiping when so suddenly Agricultural • Residential • Commercial • Industrial LIGHTNING PROTECTION SYSTEMS INSTALLED & REPAIRED Serving Central NY 30 Years - Service Provided Year Round Call or write WEBB PROFESSIONALS P.O. Uncle Henry, when the summons came, had been out in the barn “doin’ chores.” He wore a ragged and much soiled straw hat, a checked shirt without any collar and blue overalls tucked into the tops of his old cowhide boots. “By gum!” gasped Uncle Henry, looking around as if bewildered. “Well, I swan!” gurgled Aunt Em in a hoarse, frightened voice. Then her eyes fell upon Dorothy, and she said: “D-d-ddon’t that look like our little girl--our Dorothy, Henry?” “Hi, there--look out, Em!” exclaimed the old man, as Aunt Em advanced a step; “take care o’ the wild beastses, or you’re a goner!” But now Dorothy sprang forward and embraced and kissed her aunt and uncle affectionately, afterward taking their hands in her own. “Don’t be afraid,” she said to them. “You are now in the Land of Oz, where you are to live always, and be comfer’ble an’ happy. You’ll never have to worry over anything again, ‘cause there won’t be anything to worry about. And you owe it all to the kindness of my friend Princess Ozma.” Here she led them before the throne and continued: “Your Highness, this is Uncle Henry. And this is Aunt Em. ACROSS 1. Uncle Henry took off his straw hat and held it awkwardly in his hands. But the Ruler of Oz rose and came from her throne to greet her newly arrived guests, and she smiled as sweetly upon them as if they had been a king and queen. “You are very welcome here, where I have brought you for Princess Dorothy’s sake,” she said, graciously, “and I hope you will be quite happy in your new home.” Then she turned to her courtiers, who were silently and gravely regarding the scene, and added: “I present to my people our Princess Dorothy’s beloved Uncle Henry and Aunt Em, who will hereafter be subjects of our kingdom. It will please me to have you show them every kindness and honor in your power, and to join me in making them happy and contented.” MICHAEL P. I hope you will like them, and shall expect you to join me at luncheon.” So Dorothy led her relatives away, and as soon as they were out of the Throne Room and alone in the corridor, Aunt Em squeezed Dorothy’s hand and said: “Child, child! How in the world did we ever get here so quick? And is it all real? And are we to stay here, as she says? And what does it all mean, anyhow?” Dorothy laughed. “Why didn’t you tell us what you were goin’ to do?” inquired Uncle Henry, reproachfully. “If I’d known about it, I’d ‘a put on my Sunday clothes.” “I’ll ‘splain ever’thing as soon as we get to your rooms,” promised Dorothy. “You’re in great luck, Uncle Henry and Aunt Em; an’ so am I! And oh! I’m so happy to have got you here, at last!” As he walked by the little girl’s side, Uncle Henry stroked his whiskers thoughtfully. “’Pears to me, Dorothy, we won’t make bang-up fairies,” he remarked.
