“I’ve already been to high school, that’s like the biggest freak show of all.” This
year’s one act play, "Freak" by Angela Hill, focused on the social issue of bullying
and the extreme measures that some kids take to escape it all. It was a play that
hit home to both students and audience members, as many people have either
been bullied or have known someone who has made a drastic life-ending choice to
avoid being a victim.

Not every team can pull off a compelling dramatic
performance that brings audience members to
tears, but this cast and crew of 68 kids was able to
touch hearts every time they performed.
Imagine this….30 minutes, no visible scoreboard,
points that do not necessarily determine the
winner, no timeouts, no substitutions, floor
dimensions that vary, and all the while taking
on anywhere from 7 to 11 teams at one time-no
head-to-head competition. Welcome to one act play
competition. Our season began in the middle of
August on a gym floor in Malcolm and ended on December 11 on the
stage of the Johnny Carson Theatre in Norfolk. Of all the school sports
and activities, play production is by far the longest, and strangest, season.
The team practices for about four months, only to be able to compete two
or three times that season.
Our season consisted of not only the regular competitions of ECNC
and Districts, but we also stepped out of our comfort zone and decided
to compete at the Lincoln High One Act Festival on the day before
Thanksgiving break. Often times, we wonder how we would fare against
teams outside of our class size and conference, so we decided to take
a chance. We had no idea what to expect. What we did have was an
incredibly long day full of a lot of hard work. Among the 15 competitors
were schools ranging from Class A to Class D. When awards were finally
handed out (at 10:30 that night), we were definitely on the map. Will
Powers and Jacob Garrison received medals for being named to the 20
member Outstanding Festival Cast, Shi Hargens came home with an
Outstanding Actress trophy, our tech crew (behind the scenes people)
snagged one of the two Outstanding Tech trophies, and the entire cast
and crew was awarded one of the two Outstanding Dramas.

I cannot say enough about our tech, lights, set up, and make up team. These
are the kids that may never be seen on stage, yet the show could not take place
without them.
At ECNC we were runner-up to Louisville (Outstanding Performace awards
to Will Powers, Alyssa Hoeft, Shi Hargens, Lili Martinez, Michael Zavodny,
Tessa Dunse, Savannah Hargens, and Emma Schumacher) while at Districts
(Outstanding Performance awards to Will Powers, Michael Zavodny, Jacob
Garrison, Alyssa Hoeft, and Shi Hargens) we came out as champions, earning
us one of the 6 coveted spots in Norfolk and our third straight appearance
at State. What an honor it is to be able to compete against the best of the
best. When the day's performances had concluded, we tied for second place
in rankings, had scored more points, but were awarded third place by judges'
preference. The best and most impressive memory of that day for me will be the
standing ovation from a full house given to the team after their performance.
Although our team did not receive a trophy, we did not come home emptyhanded, as Shi Hargens brought home the gold medal for overall Outstanding
Actress!
The events of the season could never happen without the support of so many
people. Special thanks to my co-coach, Lori Haun, for keeping me organized,
handling all the emails/business details, and going along with my crazy ideas.
A shout out to my husband, Mike Maytum, for dealing with my crazy ideas
and schedule, building strange items (like a large silver cage), troubleshooting,
leading the tech crew, and driving the set to and from competitions. Scheduling,
shared space, and shared kids can get crazy, so thank you to the football, cross
country, volleyball, and basketball coaches for working with and around us.
Lastly, our sincere thanks to the administration, parents, and patrons of the
community. They say that if you build it, they will come. And you have. Never
once did we hesitate to come to you with a need. You trusted us with your
time, your money, and your kids. You trusted us to represent and to be a class
act, win or lose. What made us the Freaks? YOU made us the Freaks! You
helped and allowed us to stand out. You let us be the Freakiest of them all!

Student Council News
Malcolm Student Council sponsored two activities during the month of December;
which were the school banner contest and the ugly holiday sweater contest. The
National Guard will be printing a school banner based on the winning banner
design from the contest. Simeon Chase provided the winning design for the
banner. The banner will be hanging in the commons of the high school second
semester. (see picture below)
The ugly holiday sweater contest was held on Tuesday, December 16th. Students
in grades 7-12 were encourage to participate with their holiday spirit. The winners
were Mrs. Hughes, Averie Frye, Logan Thomas, Michael Zavodny, Logan Hurt, Casey
Engelbart, and Emma Schumacher (not pictured). (see picture below) Each of the
winners received a gift card to Subway.

Malcolm Action Coalition (MAC) Notes
NEXT MEETING – Wednesday, January 21st @ 5 pm in the High School Media Center.
DODGEBALL TOURNAMENT – Sunday, February 15th!! MAC is co-sponsoring with Student Council.
Registration will benefit the Malcolm Backpack Program. BE THERE!!
SAFE HOMES SCHOOL DIRECTORIES – These have been sent home. If you did not get one, there are
extras in the HS office.
PORTABLE BILLBOARD – MAC is purchasing one from the Hastings prevention group. Watch for this
at upcoming events in the new year.
LOVE AND LOGIC™ - Parenting the Love and Logic Way™ is a six session parenting program designed
by the Love and Logic Institute. Introduction will be Monday, January 19th from 6- 8 pm at Raymond
Central. There is a nominal fee. More information to come – stay tuned!

Six Malcolm Student Council members along with Mr. Tarr and Mrs. Watson volunteered at the
Center for People in Need in Lincoln on Sunday, December 14th. Those students were Emma
Schumacher, Emily Locke, Jaden Groff, Jacob Garrison, Sara Broad, Sydney Irons. District 6 Student
Council’s holiday service project was to volunteer time at the Center for People in Need during the
Toyland for Kids event. Students helped to re-stock items on tables such as toys, purses, and books.
According to the Center’s website, gifts were provided for over 8,000 children in Lancaster County.
Please donate to the Center for People in Need if you have the opportunity, as there is a significant
need for assistance in Lancaster County. Happy Holidays!!

NEXT MEETING – Wednesday, January 14th at 6:30 pm in the Administration Building.
MORE GATEWAY TO GLORY NEWS – The cheerleaders also received a $500 check for best
cheering from Westfield Gateway Mall – Congratulations to the Malcolm Cheerleaders!
SPORTSMANSHIP SUMMIT – Dale Sackett attended and reported. The students attending are
making a video to be shown at home games using the projector.
EQUIPMENT – Coaches are looking at a VertiMax machine. This machine can be used to improve
aspects of every high school sport at Malcolm. It will be at school until early January for students
and coaches to check out.
TRACK FAT PROJECT - Jack reported that there will be a meeting in January to try and recruit
sponsorship for the purchase of an FAT system for track meets.
PROJECTOR SPONSORS - Boosters are using these funds to grow the number and value of
scholarships given. If you know of a business who may be interested in advertising on the projector,
please let Dale Sackett (937-3776) or Kristie Locke (560-1822) know.
Please come to Booster meetings throughout the year. Your input is essential for events, scholarships
and other activities which Boosters participate in and/or coordinate. The funds raised go towards
improving the athletic environment & providing scholarships for our student athletes. Thanks!
