A Reading from Genesis 1:1-5
In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a
formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept
over the face of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was
light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the
darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was
evening and there was morning, the first day.

Ascribe to the Lord, you powers of heaven:

A Reading from Acts 19:1-7
While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the inland regions and came to
Ephesus, where he found some disciples. He said to them, ‘Did you receive the Holy
Spirit when you became believers?’ They replied, ‘No, we have not even heard that
there is a Holy Spirit.’ Then he said, ‘Into what then were you baptized?’ They
answered, ‘Into John’s baptism.’ Paul said, ‘John baptized with the baptism of
repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is,
in Jesus.’ On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul
had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues
and prophesied— altogether there were about twelve of them.

Mark 1:4-11
GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST
John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for
the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the
people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river
Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather
belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, ‘The one who
is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie
the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with
the Holy Spirit.’ In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by
John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens
torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven,
‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.’

Church as we celebrate the new school and working year. The service will

SUN 8 FEB: Young Peoples Taize Prayer gathering in Brisbane
Together with the Bishop & The Glennie School, we are exploring taking a
group to the special gathering led by a Taize Brother. Let Jonathan or Penny
know if you or someone you know would like to be part of our group and great

SAT 14 MAR: ‘Exploring Our Hopes and Dreams’ Marriage and Family Forum
There has been much debate in recent years on the definition and meaning of
marriage and family. The Anglican Church SQ Synod has invited us to enter
into dialogue to explore the future of marriage and family life. Everyone is
welcome regardless of beliefs etc. 10.00am-12.30pm (9.30am refreshments)
at St Luke’s Anglican Church.

SAT 21 MAR: Quiet Day with Fr David King
Exact times TBC, but mark this in your diaries now!
Fr David King is a Roman Catholic priest currently ministering from Oxley in
Brisbane. He belongs to a particular Religious Order within the Church, which
is the Congregation of the Passion of Jesus Christ, commonly known as The
Passionists. They were founded to contemplate and preach the passion of
Jesus Christ as the most overwhelming sign of God’s love for us.
David has been ordained 25 years, starting ministry in a diverse and highly
multicultural parish in Sydney. After further study in Spiritual Direction in the
United States and Australia from 2001-2003 he has worked primarily in the
ministry of spiritual direction and retreats.
The Passionists were founded as a contemplative-apostolic Congregation or
“apostolic contemplatives” depending how you see the emphasis. Of key
interest to your participation on this quiet day, it is helpful to know Fr David
seeks to hold in balance these two virtues of ministry and contemplation in his
own life. At the same time he delights in offering what he can to open up the
wisdom of this way for all Christians. David hopes to affirm fellow travellers
on this journey amidst the demands of a modern world, which most describe
as "busy." He is deeply passionate about ministry in spirituality - assisting
others to explore and depth their relationship with God.

As we look to God to lead Mothers’ Union forward in his plans for our future,
so we pray also for increased membership growth in all parts of the world.
Loving Lord, we place our trust in you.
“Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help
you.” (Psalm 37.5)
We give thanks for the prison work undertaken by members in Mauritius and
for their care for the elderly. We praise God for the faithfulness of our
members in Seychelles.
