LORNA HARPER’S FAREWELL
The 11.30 a.m. Mass on Sunday 18th
January will be a thanksgiving Mass
where we will say farewell to Lorna and
give thanks for all that she has done for
the parish over the last 23 years as the
parish secretary. There will be a
reception in the Hall following Mass.
Everyone is welcome.
Lorna’s last working day will be Friday
16th January.

died in Yorkshire and Ellen Gormley, wife of Bernie, who died on
Tuesday.
May they all rest in the peace of Christ and may those who
grieve their loss be comforted by the Lord.
COFFEE after the 9.30 a.m. Mass today will be hosted by the Communion
Group. Why not pop along and join us for a cuppa? (Please note that there will
be no coffee morning next week).

for the Brentwood Catholic Children’s Society: £943.33.
WE WELCOME INTO OUR PARISH COMMUNITY Poppy and Joshua McCann
and Violet Blue Jacqueline Beacon who will be baptised this weekend. Please
remember Poppy, Joshua and Violet and their families especially in your prayers.
SLEEPY BISCUITS: Thank you to everyone who baked sleepy biscuits for
Christmas Eve. Fr Martin hears that every child slept right through the night and
that Father Christmas came to them all - the sleepy biscuits worked! It was
lovely to have Mums, Dads and children turn up at Clergy House with trays of
biscuits that they had baked; a real community event! The sleepy biscuits were
a hit! Thank you so much!
THE BRENTWOOD CATHEDRAL CHARITY 2015: Last year, Brentwood
Cathedral supported Little Haven's Children's Hospice and, through our social
events, raised over £4000 for the Hospice. It was a tremendous achievement.
Thank you to everyone who nominated a charity that we might support in
2015. After much thought, Fr Martin has chosen The Medaille Trust. Pope
Francis has denounced human trafficking as "an open wound on the body of
contemporary society, a scourge upon the body of Christ. It is a crime against
humanity." Working with the Medaille Trust, let us play our part in healing this
wound.
The Medaille Trust is a charity founded to help women, young men and
children who have been freed from human-trafficking. The work of the Medaille
Trust is the empowerment of women, young men and children, who have been
freed from the human-trafficking industry here in the UK, enabling them to
regain their dignity and self-worth. The Medaille Trust does this by providing
safe housing and offering opportunities for physical and psychological healing
and rehabilitation. We raise awareness of the plight of those who are enslaved
and exploited in the sex-trafficking industry in the UK and campaign on this

THE FLASH MOB returns to the 9.30 a.m. Mass next Sunday (18th). If
possible, come early for a rehearsal at 8.50 a.m. (if bringing an instrument) and
9.00 a.m. if singing. Please come along so we can make a joyful noise for God.
COVENANT RENEWAL SERVICE will be taking place in the Cathedral next
Sunday, 18th January at 4.15 p.m. Bishop Alan will preside at Choral Vespers
during which the Ecumenical Covenant with St Thomas’s Church will be
renewed. This will be a very special Service and everyone is warmly invited to
attend.
CAFOD CHALLENGE UPDATE: I would like, once again, to express my huge
thanks for the most extraordinary generosity of all our parishioners. I can report
that not only did we raise enough money for two CAFOD Healthcare Clinics, we
also raised enough to buy other essentials such as a Community Water Supply
and even a camel or two to give families a way to transport goods to local
markets in desert climates. WELL DONE – YOU ARE AMAZING!
WELCOME MASS AND MEAL FOR NEW PARISHIONERS
Are you new to the Cathedral parish? Have you or your family joined the
parish during the past twelve months? If so, a sincere and warm
welcome. We would like to invite you to a Mass beginning at 7.00 p.m.,
followed by a special meal, on Friday 6th February. If you would like to
come to this Welcome Mass and meal, then please write your name(s)
with an email/phone contact details on the sheet in the Cathedral narthex.
CAN YOU HELP WITH OUR WELCOME MEAL? We are looking for people to
help with food, set up, serve, wash up and tidy and, above all, to make our new
parishioners feel very welcome. If you can help in any way, please contact Ruth

CHORAL VESPERS is celebrated in the Cathedral on Wednesdays at 6.30 p.m.
(during term time). Everyone most welcome.
250 CLUB RENEWAL - Renewals are due in January 2015. For those paying
by standing order either monthly or annually, no action is required. If you pay
in one annual instalment by cash, cheque or direct debit, this will be due by 31st
January please. If I already have your email address I will forward a renewal
form to you in this way. Alternatively, renewal/new forms are available in the
narthex, on the Parish website, by email or, if you are unable to collect one from
the church, please contact me and I will arrange to send one to you. New and
renewal forms along with payment can be returned to Clergy House for my
attention. Should you receive an email in error, please advise me so that I can
remove you from the mailing list. Also, please enquire if you are unsure how

Club, Children's Liturgy, Holy Communion) that involve children and/or
vulnerable adults then you must obtain a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service)

not have a Brentwood Diocese CRB or DBS form then please obtain an

SICK AND HOUSEBOUND PARISHIONERS: If you know anyone who is
unable to come to Mass but would still like to receive Holy Communion in their
home, please contact Clergy House so that we can put them on our list.
THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK is available to anyone who is gravely ill or
about to have an operation, so if you know someone who should receive this
important sacrament then please speak to a member of the clergy or ring the

VOCATIONS WEEKEND FOR YOUNG WOMEN (20s and 30s), 23rd - 25th
January in Liverpool. The theme will be ‘Discerning God's Call in my Life.’ The
weekend is organised by the Faithful Companions of Jesus (FCJ) Sisters. There
will be input from the Sisters on different aspects of vowed life, and time for
prayer, reflection and discussion with other young women who are also
considering a vocation to religious life. It's an opportunity to live community life

ESSEX RECUSANT SOCIETY: The next meeting (Brentwood Diocesan
Historical Society) will be held on Saturday 7th February at 2.30 p.m. at The
Grange. There will be a presentation at the meeting on "Mercy in World War
One". This is about the work of the Sisters of Mercy in the First World War. For

CAFOD is looking for volunteers who would like to take the CAFOD message
into Catholic schools in this area. You will help to inspire children and young
people in how they can act to make the world a fairer place in conjunction with
their faith. If you would like to find out more, join us on Saturday 24th January
for a day exploring all things CAFOD – from the vision, mission and values that
drive us, to where we work overseas and more! The ‘Understanding CAFOD’ Day
will be held at CAFOD’s head office at Romero House, SE1. Volunteers will be
accepted on successful completion of interview, training days and a DBS check.

BRENTWOOD CATHOLIC CHILDREN’S SOCIETY is holding its annual
Valentine’s Gala Dinner at Stockbrook Golf and Country Club, Billericay on Friday

HOLY CROSS PARISH
As the numbers of priests in active ministry decrease, so
the demands on the remaining priests increase and all
parish communities are affected. At the same time, the
size, age profile and shape of our parishes are changing.
Given these realities, we are having to find creative ways
to provide for the mission of the Church in rapidly
changing circumstances. This is both challenging and a
moment of graced renewal for the Church. Pretending that
these changes aren't happening or that they won't affect
us is no longer a tenable position to hold. Guided by the
Holy Spirit and trusting in God's will, all communities are
now having to manage these changes and plan for the
future. Holy Cross parish has experienced these changes
directly and especially in recent months when the Sunday
Mass has had to be cancelled on occasions.
These issues have already been discussed on the Holy
Cross Committee however; Fr Martin now wants to hear
your ideas and views about Holy Cross parish. How should
Holy Cross respond to the changing circumstances facing
the Church and society? How would you describe Holy
Cross parish? What kind of community do you envisage
Holy Cross becoming in the next five years? Do you think
there might need to be changes - if so, what might they
be? What would you concentrate on so that the parish
develops into a living, vibrant Eucharistic community? Do
you think the linking of Holy Cross with the Cathedral
parish has been a success? How do you think that the
communities who attend the Masses on a Saturday
evening and Sunday morning relate to each other? How
would you provide for the sacramental needs of the
community? How would you provide for the catechetical
needs of those who are preparing for baptism,
confirmation, First Holy Communion, marriage and
reception into the Church? How would the two priests who
serve the Cathedral and Holy Cross parish be best used?

or alternatively, make an appointment to see him by the
end of January.
