There are two kinds of beach enthusiasts:
those who define a beach town by what it has, and
those who value a beach for what it doesn’t have.
Designated as one of ten National Seashores, Navarre Beach isn’t home to a mall. The only
strip you’ll see here is a miles-long ribbon of pristine
white sand with snorkel-clear waters on one side and
dune paths on the other.
Where do our brilliant white sands come
from? They’re replenished daily by the same rivers
that connect our beaches to centuries of history and
miles of adventure surrounding Milton, Florida.
Naval Live Oaks
Other Florida beaches may claim palm trees,
but we have a unique history with the shade of live oaks. The
Naval Live Oaks Area, just east of Gulf Breeze on Highway
98, is part of the National Parks System.
Because live oaks were valued for shipbuilding (both
the U.S.S. Constellation and the U.S.S. Constitution (“Old
Ironsides”) were built of live oaks), President John Quincy
Adams set this land aside in the 1828 to protect the nation’s
supply of this superior shipbuilding wood. Today, wood
from this park is still used to repair our nation’s historic
ships—and interpretive exhibits and trails cast historic
shade on beach vacations.

Historic Milton &
the Canoe Capital
of Florida
While most of Florida moves at a superhighway pace, Historic Milton is a town that takes
its time and encourages guests to do the same. There
is a historic downtown with bistro dining, a gothic
chapel so pristine it caught Frank Lloyd Wright’s eye,
and blocks of antique browsing.
But it’s just off the main streets where the
real exploration begins on miles of rivers, creeks,
trails and zip lines. Don’t let the name limit you: explore
by canoe, kayak, bike, horseback and on foot.
Beauty by the mile
The Canoe Capital of Florida is famous for a
network of pristine waterways like Coldwater Creek and
Blackwater River. We’re also a great place to explore on foot,

»Old Brick Road
We’ve preserved miles of the Old Spanish Trail, brick-paved in 1915
as part of a transcontinental trail.
»Florida National Scenic Trail
Hike and backpack through pitcher plant bogs, titi swamps and
pristine forests in the 206,000-acre Blackwater River State Forest.
»Blackwater Heritage State Trail
Following a historic rail route through Milton, this trail offers
approximately nine miles of scenery, crossing several creeks. The
paved trail is accompanied by a parallel unpaved equestrian trail.

Explore Old Florida
The Blackwater River is known for its kayaking, canoeing and swimming, but it is also a meandering timeline of northwest Florida’s history. Once a
major route for the shipbuilding and lumber industries
of early Florida, the banks of the Blackwater River saw
the founding of Milton in 1844.
Historic Milton is one of the oldest cities
in Florida, and the river’s influence can be seen in the
historic buildings here and in nearby Bagdad Village.
Arcadia Mill Archaeological Site contains the ruins of
an important 19th-century water-powered mill. Once a
hub of industry—at times a sawmill, lumber mill, pail
factory and cotton textile mill—it is now surrounded by
interpretive trails and listed on the National Register of
Historic Places.
Here, Old Florida isn’t a theme. It’s home,
and we’re willing to share.

Learning in 3-D
With attractions ranging from architecture
and archaeology to forestry and marine biology, it’s
possible to learn just as much from Florida’s Playground
than any classroom.
Within minutes of each other, visitors can
explore the Panhandle Butterfly House, the newly
renovated Gulf Breeze Zoo and the educational
landmark Navarre Beach Marine Science Station. Just
inland, the environmental education continues at
Blackwater River State Park and Forest and at Arcadia
Mill Archaeological Site in historic Milton.
For students at all grade levels, Florida’s
Playground has consulted with educational experts to
develop a curriculum helpful to homeschoolers as well

Fishing the
Playground
Rivers and bayous, Santa Rosa Sound and the Gulf of
Mexico. Our shoreline and riverbank-rich hometowns
make us a popular place for fish and guests to meet.
Fishing the pier - There was a time when a great
pier was the main attraction of a beach town—that time
still reigns at Navarre Beach, home to the longest pier
on the Gulf of Mexico.
At 1545 feet, the Navarre Beach Fishing Pier is a
quarter-mile adventure for enthusiasts of fishing, sightseeing and photography alike. Featuring an open-air
restaurant and bait-and-tackle shop, it’s a popular stop
for experienced and first-time anglers.
Kayak fishing - Kayak fishing is also ideal here,
with the Gulf of Mexico and hundreds of miles of
inshore options. Particularly popular are the protected
waters of Santa Rosa Sound.
Surfcasting - Proximity to Gulf Islands National
Seashore makes our beaches ideal for fishing, with
minimal crowds and disturbances but convenient
vehicle access.

in 2008. How can one small town dominate the world of golf
