Meet THE CLASS OF 2015 THE BX FIELD LEADERSHIP EXCELLENCE SERIES The BX Field Leadership Excellence Series (BXFlex) is a five-month, eight-session program designed to transform top field force managers into high-impact leaders. This is the first year for the program, with a class of 26 field leaders from Exchange member firms. This is what participants are saying about BXFlex: Mark Rosselet, general foreman Mid-City Electric Co. Years in the industry: 36 Why he’s participating: With the ever changing roles that we have out in the field it’s always good to learn new ideas on how to handle different situations that might take place. Being able to better the communication gap between the work force and owners is key to a successful job. What he’s learned and will use in his career: We have been taught how to look at the different personalities on the job site – both co-workers and owners; and ways to better communicate via email. BX Members $105 $130 $155 Nonmembers $205 $230 $255 Contact Sanda Elkins (ext. 216) at the Exchange for more information. Conference Attendees to Receive an Economic Update at the OCC The 2015 Ohio Construction Conference will kick-off on Thursday, March 19 with a state of the industry economic update from presenting sponsor Dodge Data & Analytics. The opening session will feature the overall national economic influencers of construction as well as a review of Ohio specific construction from a selection of public and private structure types. Cliff Brewis, vice president of editorial operations for Dodge Data & Analytics will also share and review their forecast numbers for the state. The Ohio Construction Conference will be held at the Ohio Union on the OSU campus, 1739 N. High St., Columbus. The OCC serves the needs of the commercial construction industry as the premiere, collaborative educational conference in Ohio. Gathering construction stakeholders – owners, facility managers, design professionals, contractors and suppliers – the OCC encourages the exchange of information about regional and national initiatives, as well as best business practices. The cost to attend the Conference is $255 for the entire day’s programming, meals and refreshments. If you can’t commit the entire day, consider the half-day registration for $160 per person. Firms may also take advantage of a bulk discount for multiple registrations – 3 full-day registrations for $550! All registrations are non-refundable but may be transferred to another employee at the firm. For more information, contact Deb Murphy (ext. 215) at the Exchange or [email protected]. M eet the Presenter Cliff Brewis is responsible for the newsgathering and production operations at Dodge Data &Analytics (formerly McGraw Hill Construction/Dodge). In addition to operational responsibilities, Cliff is involved in customer support functions, marketing, and is a frequent speaker on the construction forecast. Cliff has been with Dodge for over 30 years in sales, planning and operations. He has worked in Detroit, Grand Rapids, Washington D.C. and San Francisco, and is a founding member of a joint AIA/AGC committee on Integrated Project Delivery in California. Cliff has a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Michigan, and an MBA from American University in Washington D.C. The 2015 Ohio Construction Conference is made possible through support of generous corporate sponsors: Welcome / Reception Sponsor Why he would recommend BXFlex: It is a great learning tool with excellent speakers and educators. It’s also great to be with others in the same role, talking about how they handle situations similar to what we would be facing. Mobile App Sponsor For more information about the BX Field Leadership Excellence Series contact Deb Murphy (ext. 215) at the Exchange or [email protected]. Field Leadership Sessions include: • • • • • • • • The Mindset Shift: From Managing Projects to Leading People Fundamentals of Effective Business Writing Understanding Your Style and the Styles of Your Team Speaking with Confidence and Clarity If You Can Manage Your Time, You Can Balance Your Life! Managing Conflict and Confrontation Your Impact on Project Risk Management Coaching and Motivating Your Team(s) for Performance Meet THE CLASS OF 2015 THE BX EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE The BX Executive Leadership Experience (BXLX) is a nine-month program in which a small group of professionals are educated and coached by nationally-recognized experts in construction leadership and business development. Presenters of the 11 sessions are experts from FMI and Advanced Performance Group of Denver, Reputation Management Associates, and a number of civic and industry leaders. This is the fourth year for the program, with a class of 20 executives from Exchange member firms. This is what participants are saying about the BXLX: Jeff Robinson, vice president of human resources BRICKMAN Years in the industry: 7 Why he’s participating: To continue learning about the industry and to gain additional leadership perspectives and experiences. Continuous learning is the best way to develop and grow. I am also interested in the networking opportunities and the ability to learn from others through this experience. The program he’s found most beneficial: So far, “Leading Yourself while Leading Others” and “Strategic Thinking” have been two of the most engaging sessions. I have continued to learn from Jim Krug and some of his leadership diagrams that explained the Crossroads of Leadership. As for Strategic Thinking, we always have to maintain mental fortitude and flexibility. If we don’t continuously learn or remain intellectually curious we will be passed by others and not be able to advance our industry. Why he would recommend BXLX: Of course! BXLX has afforded me the opportunity to continue my development and most of all learning. The opportunity to learn from others while building your relationship network is important as a leader in this industry and local community. Applications for the BXLX Class of 2016 will be available in April. For information on enrolling, contact Deb Murphy (ext. 215) at the Exchange or [email protected]. BX AMBASSADOR PROGRAM Opportunities to “Pay it Forward” The Builders Exchange of Central Ohio, one of the state’s oldest and largest commercial construction trade associations, plays a pivotal role in the local industry. Our membership is comprised of nearly 800 member firms and more than 1,700 members, representing the entire spectrum of the commercial construction industry. With hundreds of opportunities in education, services and networking, the biggest question new members have is “Where do I start?” To that end, the BX Ambassador Program was developed. During their first year of membership, each new member is paired with a long-time member of the Exchange. “This is a great way to help new members maximize their membership, and it also helps to facilitate new business relationships for both members,” said Michelle Kadisevskis, director of membership services at the Exchange. “As an ambassador, your job is to make four phone calls a year to an 2015-2016 BX SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Exchange Helps Students with Rising Cost of College The cost of a higher education keeps going up. In its 2014 Trends in College Pricing report, the College Board Advocacy and Policy Center revealed that students are paying an average of 2.9% more in tuition and fees at public four-year colleges this year than they paid last year, and 3.3% more at two-year institutions. The good news for students seeking construction-related degrees is that the Builders Exchange scholarship program has been investing in our industry’s future since 1959, and continues to help defray the rising cost of higher education. Last year, 49 students shared a record total of $60,000 in scholarship awards through the BX scholarship program. Individual awards were as much as $5,000. Students enrolled at a four-year college or in a two-year program are eligible, and high school seniors may also apply. Prior recipients of a BX scholarship are encouraged to re-apply for the coming school year. Applicants are evaluated on the following criteria: • • • • academic achievement community and school involvement financial need relationship of the student’s field of study to the construction industry • potential future impact of the student on the central Ohio construction community • quality of the application If you know someone seeking a construction-related degree - a relative, an employee or a friend - encourage them to apply for a BX scholarship. The deadline for applications is noon on Friday, Feb. 20. Forms can be downloaded from bx.org – click on Scholarships in the blue navigation bar. Scholarship winners will be announced in May. For more information on the BX scholarship program, contact Stacey Kruse (ext. 233) or Pam Austin (ext. 222) at the Exchange. assigned new member inviting them to an upcoming event,” Kadisevskis stated. “It’s an easy way to get involved in your association!” The BX reminds all volunteers when it’s time to make calls. Become a BX Ambassador, show a new member his or her BX benefits, and help them get to know others in the industry. Anyone interested in joining the program should contact Kadisevskis (ext.219) at the Exchange or [email protected]. Does Your Team Know How to Read Construction Drawings? A set of drawings holds an entire project together, serving as the universal language for a project site. Make sure your employees are speaking the same language by sending them to the upcoming Introduction to Construction Drawings course at the Exchange. Through lecture and hands-on work with commercial drawings, an architect and a contractor will provide your staff the fundamental knowledge of reading and understanding blueprints. This course will be offered Tuesday and Thursday, Feb. 10 and 12, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., and is ideal for new employees, office personnel and field employees, as well as anyone who is looking to refine their blueprint reading skills. Introduction to Construction Drawings is taught by Chris Bendinelli (Prime AE Group, Inc.) and Adam Drexel (Ruscilli Construction Co., Inc.). After completing this class, attendees will: • • • • have a basic knowledge of reading plans and specifications understand general terms in the design process know where to find information in a set of plans further understand how trades interrelate The cost for Introduction to Construction Drawings is $180 for employees of BX member firms and $280 for nonmembers.
