Dear Wildcat Families:
I hope everyone had a happy and healthy holiday season! January and the return to school seem to
have ushered in the bitter cold; but before too long, I’ll be working on the summer newsletter! So let’s

“Preparing students with a
global perspective
through relationships,
rigor, and relevance.”

Speaking of climate, The Weather Channel came to Wheeling High School on January 5 to talk to our
students about how they utilize technology to bridge the gap between home and school when school

interested in how our students can continue engaging in instruction with their devices through the use
of the internet, educational apps, Facetime, and other interactive learning tools. Staff from the Weather
Channel interviewed two students in Mr. Uhrik’s Freshman English class. The highlights of the interview
were aired on January 6 at 6 am.
In January we welcomed the families of the graduating class of 2019. I want to extend a special thank
you to everyone who worked to make it a valuable and important evening, and kudos to the parents
who carved out time to attend. Information shared on Freshman Parent Night offers incoming freshmen
a comprehensive survey of required courses, an explanation on how they are placed in these courses,
and describes the pathways available to help freshmen choose electives. By this time, all incoming
freshmen should have met with counselors to develop a course plan for the 2015-2016 school year. All
current freshmen, sophomores, and juniors should have met with their counselors by now as well.
As customary during second semester there are important test dates scheduled for which I know you
want to be aware of. On March 3, our juniors will take the ACT, a curriculum and standards based
test, which assesses student readiness for college. Please look for additional information regarding the
ACT in this newsletter.
Principal
College Board Advanced Placement testing takes place on nationally set dates in May. Registration for
these very important, college-accredited tests is February 2 through March 2. After second semester has

the day. For additional information, please do not hesitate to contact our counselors or our assessment
center staff. If your children are taking an AP class, then they have the responsibility and opportunity to
also take the AP test in order to earn college credit.
Our Fine Arts theatre students are already practicing for the spring production of the musical, “The
Spelling Bee.” Please plan to attend one of the performances scheduled for Thursday, April 30,
Friday, May 1, or Saturday, May 2. Our students work very hard to bring all these performances to the
community, and they are thrilled and energized when performing to a full house!
The transition from winter to spring is such an amazing time of the year. I hope to see all of you at our
events throughout the second semester, sharing in the excitement of our students, their families, and our
staff!
With Warm regards,
Angela Sisi

Queridas Familias Wildcat:

Sleep is a natural part of everybody’s life, but many people know very little about how important it is,
and some even try to get by with little sleep. Sleep is something that our bodies need to do; it is not an
option. Even though the exact reasons for sleep remain a mystery, we do know that during sleep many
of the body’s major organ and regulatory systems continue to work actively. Some parts of the brain
actually increase their activity dramatically, and the body produces more of certain hormones.
Sleep, like good nutrition and exercise, is important for our minds and bodies to function normally. In
fact, sleep appears to be required for survival. Studies show that rats deprived of sleep die within two to
three weeks, a time frame similar to death due to starvation.
An internal biological clock regulates the time for sleep. It programs each person to feel sleepy during
the nighttime hours and to be active during the daylight hours. Light is the cue that synchronizes the
biological clock to the 24-hour cycle of day and night.
Sleepiness due to chronic lack of adequate sleep is a big problem in the United States and affects many
adolescents as well as adults. Adolescents need at least 9 hours of sleep each night to do their best.
Most adults need approximately 8 hours of sleep each night. Adolescents are still undergoing a growth
phase, both physically and emotionally, hence the increase time that students need to rest!
Problem sleepiness has serious consequences – it puts adolescents and adults at risk for drowsy driving.
It may increase the risk of accidents and injuries. In addition, lack of sleep can have a negative effect
on adolescent’s performance in school, in extra-curricular activities, and in social relationships.
As you can see, sleep is as important as good nutrition and exercise. Our teens need extra sleep in
order to grow, thrive, and learn!
If you have any questions, please call the School Nurse, Lori Leska, at 847-718-7075.

Wheeling is such an exciting and engaging environment; rich in inspiration and innovation; engineered
to nurture, develop and challenge students to excel. With rigorous coursework, real world problembased learning, meaningful experiences and specialized programs, we set out to increase our students’
potential for post-secondary achievements and life-long success using proven strategies. We believe

same commitment to student success.
PBIS is a prevention-oriented way for school personnel to organize evidence-based practices; improve
the implementation of those practices over time; and maximize academic and social behavior outcomes
for students. As a PBIS sponsored school, we are working to engage all students through traditional, as
well as non-traditional means to become active members of our positive school community, taking the
all-in approach towards setting ENGAGEMENT as a targeted priority.
One of our missions is to promote school pride by encouraging students to demonstrate three major
JOHYHJ[LYPZ[PJZVMHWVZP[P]LZ[\KLU[!HYLZWLJ[PUN[OLTZLS]LZHUKV[OLYZ"IILPUNYLZWVUZPISLHUK
[HRPUNV^ULYZOPWMVY[OLPYYVSLZPU[OLPYV^UZ\JJLZZ"HUKJILPUNOLSWM\S[V[OVZLPU[OLPYJVTT\UP[`
in need of assistance. These are the values that all Wheeling High School students are expected
to demonstrate school-wide, inside and outside of the classroom. They are essential to building
relationships, trust and integrated social and emotional experiences applicable in everyday life. PBIS
also emphasizes that staff not only teach and reward these behaviors but model them as well and
encourages us to practice what we preach.
According to PBIS, acknowledgement of positive behaviors may come through a recognition award or
a simple and sincere pat on the back. Schools have many safety guidelines on how to catch students
making poor choices and respond immediately to prevent repetitious mistakes. PBIS emphasizes
“CATCHING STUDENTS BEING GOOD” and responding immediately with ENCOURAGING
incentives to keep making those positive choices.
Our entire school faculty is buying-in to PBIS by nominating students for recognition when they are
“CAUGHT” doing something good, and we are calling it “PBIS EVERYDAY HERO RECOGNITIONS”.
The idea has been modeled after the EVERYDAY HERO NOMINATIONS PROGRAM adopted by
District 214 to recognize staff for their positive contributions. Since the beginning of this school year,
staff members have nominated a number of students for the Everyday Hero Recognition. This special
recognition presents us with a way to respond immediately with a small token of our appreciation to
students for the positive choices they make. Nominations for this recognition include students who
have found and returned lost wallets or electronic devices such as iPads; those who came to the aid or
defense of a weaker/struggling student; or those who have shown great progress in tough or potentially
defeating situations.
Although PBIS is in its infancy stages at Wheeling High School, it showcases our school pride and the
impact of the positive school spirit that helps make Wheeling such a wonderful place to learn, work and
play. Rock-on Wildcats and keep showing the world how things are done THE WILDCAT WAY!
Keep watching for greater things to happen at Wheeling High School!

Never underestimate the power of teens. As the holiday season approached closer and closer, teens throughout the district were busy
working on collecting nonperishable foods for their respective annual food drives to pass out to families in their communities. The
Hersey Huskies had an enormous overstock of items and were kind enough to contact WHS and share the wealth of food for our
families. Hats off to you Huskies. Your generosity will never be forgotten.
A huge thank you to all the students from throughout the district who went above and beyond to help their neighbors. You all are
everyday Heroes!!
