San Antonio Prefreshman Engineering Program PREP 2015 - Year 1 Application Come to PREP and discover, learn, grow, make new friends, prepare for high school, experience college life, and explore possible careers. WHAT IS PREP? PREP is a mathematics-based, academic enrichment program. It emphasizes the development of abstract reasoning and problem solving skills. PREP helps students prepare for careers in the fields of mathematics, science, technology, and engineering. The pr ogram includes course work, team projects, class presentations, examinations, career awareness speakers, field trips, and special events. PREP is held over the course of four summers. Students can reapply each year. High school elective credit is awarded by school districts for the successful completion of PREP. This credit will affect a student’s grade point average. Year 1 curriculum includes: Logic and its Applications to Mathematics, Introduction to Engineering, Problem Solving, Career Awareness Seminars, Research and Study Time, Field Trips and Special Events. Who: 1600 middle school and high school students from the Greater San Antonio Area are expected to enroll. Members of minority groups and women are especially encouraged to apply. When: PREP Opening Day – Monday, June 15 § PREP Closing Ceremony – Thursday, July 30, 2015 Daily Monday through Thursday, hours vary by campus. An average day is from 6-7 hours, plus homework. A field trip is scheduled on a Friday during the session. Where: Anticipated Year 1 PREP sites are: The University of Texas at San Antonio (Main and Downtown Campuses), Palo Alto College, St. Philip’s College-MLK, Northwest Vista College, and Northeast Lakeview College. Cost: Most schools provide funding for their students to participate; please see your school counselor for details. If a school does not provide funding, the tuition is $300 per student due after student is accepted into the program. Acceptance notification is mailed after mid-March. The number of participants accepted depends upon contributed in-kind and financial support from public and private agencies. No tuition refunds are granted after Friday, June 12, 2015. A limited number of need based scholarships may be available for tuition. To be considered for this assistance, other documents may also be requested to determine eligibility, but does not guarantee assistance. Special Assistance: If funding becomes available, the following assistance will be offered: 1. Free lunch daily, if eligible for the Summer Food Service Program. 2. Transportation assistance, through passes for free or reduced bus fare. Requirements: Please make sure that you meet the requirements before submitting an application. Be sure you are willing to fully commit to the program and make sure you have permission from your parent or guardian. Before completing the application, research and discuss transportation arrangements with your parents. Submit your completed application on time. The completed application must be postmarked on or before February 10, 2015. Site assignments are decided on a "first-come, first-served" basis. Submit application early, if possible. Applications are considered complete only when report card, essay, and nomination forms are attached to application. Incomplete applications will NOT be processed and may be denied. I. APPLICATION When completing application, use black or blue ink. List the school district you live in under the “Current School Information,” even if you attend a private school or are home-schooled. Make sure your parents, or your guardian, signs in the designated areas. Your application is incomplete without their signature. II. ATTACHMENTS Submit the following with your application: A copy of your current report card; No hand-written, No web-based, and No progress reports are accepted. -Your official report card must include information on conduct. -Honors classes, Pre-AP, or advanced placement courses must be identified on your report card. -If you have lost your report card, ask your Guidance Counselor for a duplicate, on letterhead and signed by the Counselor or Principal. Conduct and honors or advanced placement courses must be listed. -You must include an official transcript from your school if you are not currently taking a math or science course. A well-written essay on “Why I want to attend PREP.” The completed Mathematics teacher nomination form. The completed Science, English or Counselor nomination form. “The first 10 accepted students from each JISD Middle School will receive a tuition scholarship that pays the full tuition fee of $300.” Once completed, keep a copy of the application packet for your records. Staple application packet, essay, nomination forms and your report card together and return to your campus by February 10, 2015. You can expect to hear from PREP after mid-March on the status of your acceptance.
