Nine-year-old Xiaolin strikes the right note...
A NINe-YeAR-olD pianist has
won this year’s annual BSMe Young
Musicians of the Gulf competition –
for the second time in a row.
Xiaolin Zhang from the Horizon
School of Dubai beat five musicians
in last night’s final. British Ambassador Iain Lindsay presented the trophy to him.
US Ambassador William Roebuck presented runner-up, Hai Wei
li from the British School of Kuwait, with his trophy.
The 16th annual competition was
hosted by St Christopher’s School
and the final was held at the Sofitel
Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea and
Spa.
The finalists were pianists Hei
Wei li and Xiaolin Zhang, along
with singers Zahid Siddiqui and
Alaw Henderson, St Christopher’s
School student and tabla player Sriram Venkatesh and cellist Joonwoo
Jeong.
Three music experts from the UK
were flown in to judge the competition. They were conductor and examiner Richard Dickins, conductor
Christopher Adey and flautist and
teacher Atarah Ben-Tobin.
The competition, which has
grown into a premier music event
for young people in the region, was
launched by St Christopher’s School
in 1998.
More than 100 students from
10 schools in Kuwait, Abu Dhabi,
Dubai, Sharjah, Doha and Bahrain
took part in this year’s contest.

Bus crash victim buried
