EDNA LORRAINE
WOLFE GORDON
Edna
Lorraine
Wolfe
Gordon was born Feb. 18,
1929, in Williams, Ariz., and
passed away on Wednesday,
Jan. 21, 2015, in Hatch, N.M.
She was raised and attended
grade school in Grand
Canyon, Ariz. After grade
school, she attended school
in Prescott, Ariz. During
World War II, she worked as
a Harvey Girl to pay her own
way. After graduation, she
moved to Albuquerque, where
she attended cosmetology
school. It was there that she
met her best friend, who
would later become our aunt,
Faye Gordon. She moved to
Hot Springs, N.M., in 1947,
where she and Faye owned
and operated a beauty salon.
She met a handsome cowboy
at a dance at the Engle School
House and later married the
love of her life, Dick Gordon.
The couple made their home
on the family ranch in Caballo,

daughters, Charlotte, Alma
and Patty. The 1950s was a
time of historic drought in
New Mexico. Edna worked
tirelessly beside her husband
to keep a herd of cattle alive.
Things got so bad that to
survive they drove their entire
herd of cattle to the Oscoro
Mountains just to survive.
Edna rode on this trip many
dusty miles through the heat
of summer and a blizzard on
the way home. She was there
when the Gordons drove
the last cattle ever to cross
Elephant Butte Dam. Edna
later worked for the Sierra
County Assessor, and the
Sierra County Treasurer and
at Ekmar Abstract & Title
Co., until her retirement.
Edna was a talented artist,
loved to cook, and was one
of the founders of the Caballo
Church.
She is preceded in death by
her parents; husband, Dick
Gordon; and an infant son,
James William.
She leaves to mourn her three
daughters, Charlotte Hall
(Willard) of Las Palomas,
Alma Grantham of Caballo,
and Patty Trusty of Las
Cruces. She is also survived
by six grandchildren, and
four great-grandchildren.
Visitation for family and
friends was held on Sunday,
Jan. 25, 2015, at the Chapel
of Kirikos Family Funeral
Home.
Services for Edna were held
at 10 a.m., at the Caballo
Church on Monday, Jan. 26,
2015, followed by burial at
the Caballo Cemetery.

1948, to Lorren and Ruby
(Barr) Schrepel. He served
in the United States Army
for 23 years, eight years in
Vietnam.
He died on Saturday, Jan.
10, 2015, with his wife,
Carolyn, by his side. “He
said, ‘I love you,’ I said the
same to him and I would see
him on the other side and he
was on his way to meet God.
Safe journey, my husband,
my friend, my love.”
Survivors include his wife,
Carolyn L. Schrepel of
Truth or Consequences; son,
Heiko of Oakland, Calif.;
eight stepchildren; numerous
grandchildren and greatgrandchildren; many friends;
family from Colorado include
his sister, Vinta, brother,
Charles, and nieces and
nephews.
Cremation has taken place
and no services will be held.

Jackie Wilson passed in the
wee hours of Jan. 24, 2015.
She was born Aug. 10, 1928
to Raymond and Louise
Wilson.
She is survived by her
children, Georgette (John) of
Elephant Butte, Judy (Joel)
of Maine, Lyle of Utah, and
Richard (Tammi) of Alaska;
grandchildren,
Woody
(Lauri) of Las Lunas, Kim of
Albuquerque, Laura (Isaac)
of Albuquerque, Lee of
Alaska, and Rhonda.; and lots
of great, great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death
by her parents; a son and
great grandson, Julio, and
granddaughter, Bobbie Dee.
Mother achieved the rank of
Silver Life Master for bridge,
which she loved.
At her request, no services
are planned.

LLC owners are called
members. They can run the
business or hire managers to
run it. A member-managed
LLC resembles a partnership;
a manager-run LLC mimics
a corporation. Most states
require an LLC to have an
operating agreement that
states the organization’s
membership and management
structure. The LLC isn’t
required to issue membership
shares, hold meetings or
record decisions, but it is
advisable to do so to avoid
misunderstandings
and
conflicts.
Oversight is much stricter
for corporations; they must
register with the state,
adopt bylaws, issue shares
to equity holders/owners,
hold shareholder meetings
and file annual reports,
among other requirements.
Shareholders don’t manage
the corporation’s affairs or
bear personal responsibility
for the business’s obligations;
they vote for directors who
hire managers to fulfill these
tasks.
C corporations pay taxes on
the corporation’s earnings,
and
their
shareholders
are individually taxed on
dividends. If the business
qualifies, it can elect S
corporation status, avoiding
corporate taxes and passing
losses or gains directly to
shareholders. The rules for
organizing as an S corporation
are strict, however, and not all
businesses qualify.

The form a new business
should take isn’t always
obvious. Though many selfemployed
entrepreneurs
begin as sole proprietors,
an individual can structure
her business in many other
ways. The best structure is
the one that fits her business’s
strategy and size and offers
the greatest protection from
liability and taxes.
FLYING SOLO
A sole proprietorship, the
simplest business form, is
logical for many startups
or
solo
professionals,
such
as
consultants,
private
investigators
or
freelance writers. In a sole
proprietorship, the business is
not separate from the owner,
and his business income and
losses are included on his
personal tax returns.
A sole proprietor often
has little overhead, and
personal assets are used in the
business. He operates under
his own name or creates a
“doing business as” moniker.
Because the sole proprietor
is personally responsible for
all his business’s debts and
liabilities, he might want
to incorporate or become a
limited liability company to
protect his assets.
A sole proprietor rarely
has to do more than obtain
a business license and gross
receipts tax number, but his
business type might require
registration with licensing
authorities.
CHOOSING PARTNERS
Some solo entrepreneurs
evolve into partnerships,
LLCs or corporations to limit
liability, expand opportunities
or attract investors. It takes
at least two people to form
a partnership, and the
arrangement can be general
–with each partner’s actions
binding the entire group– or
limited, where the general
partner runs the business
and the limited partner
receives returns, but is silent
and powerless in business
matters.
All gains and losses go
directly to individual partners
in proportions agreed to in
the partnership agreement.
Partnerships can be simple
arrangements between two or
more people, or they can be
more formal combinations.

Hazen Facing Five More Criminal Charges

Frederick Wilson is seeking
singers for a premier
performance of two of his
original compositions, one a
requiem for those who died
on 9/11/2001 and the other
“A Testament of Hope” in
memory of Dr. Martin Luther
King.
Rehearsals and performance
will be at the Elephant
Butte RV Resort Event
Center. Rehearsals begin
7-9 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 3.
The performance will be on
Sunday, April 12, at 3 p.m.
Mr.
Wilson
composed
several other major pieces
for orchestra and chorus, and
served as guest conductor for
the Anchorage Symphony
Orchestra & Chorus and
members of the Detroit
Symphony in the performance
of his original composition,
“Mass in f Minor in Memory
of Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr.” He also served as
principal trombonist with the
Youngstown Philharmonic
Orchestra.

Local Woman Assaulted Transport
Officers After Attacking City Police

As reported in last week’s
edition of The Herald, 20year-old Trinity Hazen of
Truth or Consequences was
already having a bad day
when her actions of tearing
up a home led to her arrest
Saturday, Jan. 17. Things
only got worse when Ms.
Hazen decided to attack
Truth or Consequences Police
Detective [TCPD] Officer
Yoser Bojorquez and Sgt.
Erica Baker. That incident
led to Hazen facing three
criminal counts, including
felony charges.
Things only continued to
get worse, however, as the
evening wore on.
A
criminal
complaint
filed by TCPD Detective
George Lee in Sierra County
Magistrate Court on Monday,
Jan. 26, details the events that
led to five additional criminal
charges being filed against
her.
Once Ms. Hazen was
booked into the Sierra County
Detention Center [SCDC],
TRINITY HAZEN
she was set to be transferred
to the Luna County Detention
Center in Deming, with
SCDC
officers Thomas
Schalkofski and Victor Rees
scheduled to transfer her out
of county.
At approximately 7:30 p.m.,
Saturday, while en route to
Deming in the jail’s transport
van, Ms. Hazen spat on
officers Rees and Schalkofski
through
the
vehicle’s
expanded metal barrier.

reports of the incident,

What is it with potluck
suppers and chicken? I love
the dish, and enjoy going
to potlucks because I know
that I will be treated to a
fine supper and I can eat all
the chicken my tummy can
hold. However, I know one
preacher who would have
trouble with potlucks. I am
sure he would resent all those
he had to go because of the
chicken that would be placed
in front of him.
My preacher friend is Peter
of the Bible. You see, Jesus
predicted that Peter would
deny Him three times. In fact,
the Scripture states that Peter
would deny Jesus three times
before the cock crowed twice.
While the Bible does not state
it, the sound of the crowing,
the look at a chicken, both
reminded Peter of what
happened. Now, if you read
the Bible, Peter’s sin was
forgiven, but that does not
erase the taste, the smell, the
vision of chickens and sin.
That is a problem today. We
suffer through chickenitis.
Officer Rees pulled over to
the side of Interstate 25 near
Milepost 65, and both officers
attempted to place a spit hood
on the inmate, identified as
Ms. Hazen, after she began
spitting on both officers
beginning near Milepost 67.
However, Hazen refused to
comply with the officers’
orders, and pulled the hood
off of her head and attempted
to kick the officers.
The officers decided to
place Ms. Hazen’s handcuffs
behind her to prevent her
from removing the spit
hood, but the woman made
several attempts to bite the
officers while they attempted
to remove and replace the
handcuffs. Once re-cuffed,
Hazen managed to slip one
hand out of the restraints, and
had to be cuffed again.
In addition to her previous
charges, Hazen has been
charged with two counts of
fourth-degree felony counts
of battery upon a peace
officer, two criminal counts
of assault upon a peace
officer, and a single criminal
count of resisting, evading or
obstructing an officer.

Friend, I tell you, you cannot
fight this by yourself. When
you do, you fall deeper and
deeper into the abyss of guilt.
It gnaws into your psyche
till it controls you. Don’t
believe me? What things are
you doing that are destroying
you? Alcohol? Drugs? Acting
out? You know what it is. It is
that self-destruct button that
is tearing you apart.
First thing is to realize it is
there.
Second, turn your life to the
only one who can help you
fight this battle. Jesus.
Third, contact me or a pastor
who is a member of the Sierra
County Ministerial Alliance.
Allow these people to help
you overcome the pain of
sin.

Sin forgiven has a tendency to
raise its ugly head. Reminders
of what we have done can and
often plague us.
Those
who
have
a
relationship with Jesus know
that not only is sin forgiven,
but it is also forgotten. That
is, sin, placed at the foot of
the Cross will be forgiven all
the time. Not only forgiven,
but also forgotten.
We have a God that
understands sin, though
having not sinned himself. He
felt the pang of sin, I am sure,
when Peter ran from Him. He
feels the sin we commit. Still,
He is anxious to forgive us.
At the end of sin, He is there
telling us to release the sin
upon Him. He can carry the
burden, the memories of it.
I feel hurt when I think of
the person who does not have
that advocate. You know who
you are. You know that one
sin you did, that comes back
to haunt your memories. That
sin may have done grievous
harm to another. It maybe
