The program includes the West Coast premieres of Gueto, choreographed by Vieira to music of Marcos Carvalho, and Búzios, choreographed by Guilherme Durarte to music of Leo Jesus. For over 30 years, New York City-based DanceBrazil has thrilled audiences across the United States and throughout the world with its dazzling artistry, which is inspired by the cultural tapestry of Brazil. Whether in the streets or on stage in the most prestigious theaters, the dancers of DanceBrazil never fail to enthrall audiences with the company’s unique fusion of Afro-Brazilian movement, contemporary dance and Capoeira, the traditional dance form that had its origins from African slaves from Angola and Mozambique and evolved in colonial Brazil. Afro-Brazilians represent the largest ethnic group in Brazil, approximately 49.6%, see DANCE Pg. 5 Los Angeles Clergy Unite to Prepare for Disasters The newly formed Los Angeles Interfaith Clergy Coalition (LAICC) kicked off 2015 with a meeting of Clergy and Faith leaders from many different religious denominations and traditions to help Houses of Worship throughout Los Angeles develop a unified system for working together and supporting each other during emergencies and disaster events. The goal of the LAICC is to encourage, educate, and empower Houses of Worship to be resilient in times of disaster for themselves and the communities they serve. The increase and frequency of natural and man-made disasters inspired these leaders to come together and focus on emergency preparedness planning for their Houses of Worship. At the January meeting the group elected their initial leadership and designated geographical areas for Advisors to cover throughout Los Angeles County. Rev. Dr. Juan Carlos Mendez, Bishop, Churches In Action, was elected as Presiding Chairman and Public Affairs Coordinator. Co-Chairs include; Dr. E. Wayne Gaddis, President of the California Missionary Baptist State Convention; Shaykh Qazi Asad, Muslim faith, Law Enforcement Coordinator; Rev. Janet Weiland, Church of Scientology, Meeting Coordinator; and Lady Alicia Hamilton, TRN: The Revelation Network, Technology and Communications Coordinator. see DISASTERS Pg. 5 Rev. They are messengers or certain kind of energy that is in you. They are serving you by telling you what is going on within you and in your life. They allow you to understand what you are experiencing. Your emotions are not good neither bad; they just are. They run through you, and once its message is understood, when you find out its purpose, you need to let them go. If you don’t let go your emotions, they can create problems by remaining in your system more than necessary and become toxic. To feel afraid in front of a big change in your life is perfectly normal. The fear allows you to think carefully about your next steps and to be precautious. But when the fear shows up any time change is happening in your life, then this emotion is not serving you anymore, it is working against you. It has become a way to react, a pattern. It is in that moment when you will need to challenge your fear. Ask the emotion: what are you trying to tell me? Why are you showing up in this exact moment? It is a good practice to check with yourself. To ask yourself: how do I feel? The same happens with pain. It is normal to feel it after a break up or after losing someone you love. It is part of the healing process. But if the pain stops you from being in a relationship again, and becomes an excuse to close your heart to love, then the pain is working Judith Costa against you. Your emotions are always connected to a thought. Observe the thoughts you are having and ask yourself: are they supporting a toxic emotion that I need to let go? If your answer is yes, allow yourself to choose different thoughts, those which bring joy, love and abundance. You cannot suppress or deny your emotions. Don’t consider them your enemies. It is normal to be angry, sad or afraid. Nothing will happen if you go to the root of an emotion and identify what has triggered it. Have the courage to question and reason why it has made itself present when it does. When you are too afraid to look inside of yourself to find out why an emotion is there, you try to ignore it. But the emotion will soon find another occasion to be present in your life, to ask you to pay attention to it. If you want to have a happy life, rely in the power of the emotions you have and, after acknowledge them, let them go. www.judithmcosta.com On Saturday, February 7th, 2015 the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) Athens Westmont Section will host its Annual Black History Program. “This year’s theme “An Adventure through Our History” will explore by eras the contributions made to our rich history. During this time there are many energy transitions occurring, and I can feel it strong in our home. We have a 17 year old dog, who is in a major transition. His name is Joey, and we brought him up here. He was up for adoption when he was one month old at a pet store, and I brought him home as a present to my husband and daughter, who was nine at the time. Joey was adorable – even though our first Christmas he peed and pooped under our Christmas tree. As the years went by we rebuilt and remodeled our home, and he was always by our side. He became best friends with my husband, an actor, and the two of them stayed up countless nights together, with his bed in “man’s world,” my husband’s office. He was the baby dog to another dog we had named Fred, and a cat named Puff. Then he was the companion dog to our other adopted dog, JD. He then became the older dog to baby dog Shiro – he still is, and now he is the older dog to our youngest dog, Kuro. So Joey played a significant part in our life here in Mar Vista. But now, he is an aged dog. He cannot see well anymore, nor can he hear well, and he has trouble walking. My husband is now his caregiver. Every morning my husband wakes up, and cleans Joey’s bowel movement and pee in “man’s world,” and gives Joey a massage and welcomes him for another day. He then hand feeds Joey and moves Joey outside to a special pillow he has set up for him so Joey can en- My husband works with our pets in Happy 2015 to you all, Janet Mitsui Brown, www.thejoyoffengshui.com CCN LET US SAVE YOU TIME & MONEY WARDER McKENZIE REACH 75+ MILLION READERS WITH ONE ORDER, ONE BILL! Diverse Cast For “At The Top Of The Pyramid” Brings Slice Of Teen Life To The Big Screen By Shirley Hawkins Dr. Marcia Ann Mims Coppertino of Coppertino and Associates Consulting Group in Beverly Hills has a vision: to open a hospital for sick children. But not just any hospital: Dr. Coppertino’s mission is to establish the Mercy Mission Bear Hospital and Adoption Agency whose goal is to offer world class pediatric medical care and teddy bears to ill youth. The hospital, which distributed 25,000 bears to sick children in 2014, is currently launching a fundraising campaign to build the hospital. “Children in hospice centers truly appreciate a loving teddy bear to hold and to comfort them at night. Our goal is to provide medical attention, love and comfort to sick children.” Dr. Coppertino recently shared her plan to erect the Mercy Mission Bear Hospital during a New Year’s Brunch at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills. “We have been fundraising for the past two years,” said Dr. Coppertino, who added that the hospital welcomes donations. She expressed her excitement over the three-story, state-of-the-art hospital slated to be erected in 2015. Aware that teddy bears regularly provide comfort to ill and sick children, Dr. Coppertino said the hospital’s core mission will be to “adopt” and repair discarded and unwanted teddy bears that will be donated to sufferchildren ing from life threatening and terminally ill diseases. Hospital supporters will be able to adopt a refurbished teddy bear or to present donated new bears to lonely, sick and homeless children. Volunteers will also distribute teddy bears to seniors in hospitals and convalescent homes as well as on Skid Row to provide the sick and disenfranchised with comfort and cheer. Dr. Coppertino added, “Many of our teddy bears come from broken homes or are left abandoned or discarded by their previous owners. Other teddy bears are simply donated to us after experiencing neglect or abuse.” Dr. Coppertino said that “surgeons” will repair and refurbish abandoned teddy bears that need a new home. “We just received a teddy bear from Egypt,” said Dr. Coppertino. “When we receive these donated teddy bears, many times they have missing ears and limbs, battered noses, torn feet, damaged paws and missing body fur which will be repaired by skilled “surgical” hands,” she said. Invited guests were enthusiastic about the hospital and expressed their support. “Mercy Mission feels that no bear 3 www.calcrusnews.com Yale University in New Haven Connecticut it brought together some talented college players, legendary ones, and heroes of the present. Guests were treated to a gourmet brunch that featured sushi, oysters, crab, prime rib, fish, fresh fruit and delectable desserts. Graves Thicker Than Water: The Tankards is a fairly new family show that first aired in November 2013. Now, back for its second season, which began airing January of 2015 is again taking the world by storm. Millions of viewers have tuned in for both seasons and we can’t get enough. CCN got a chance to speak with Mr. and Mrs. Tankard and ask them a few questions that some could be wondering about being a Godly based family on TV. See conversation below: Good afternoon Mr. and Mrs. Tankard my name is Quanda R. Graves from California Crusaders Newspaper and I want to thank you for allowing the interview today. CCN: Mr. Tankard, with reality TV having such a negative connotation, why do it? Mr. Tankard: I’ve never allowed lemons to spoil everything. There are drunk drivers out there, but we all still drive. CCN: So true. What did you do to prepare for this journey? Mr. Tankard: We spoke to Bishop DANCE from Pg. 1 and are the largest Black population outside of Africa. DanceBrazil will premiere two pieces new to Los Angeles audiences: Gueto (“Ghetto”), a testimony to the abiding vitality and humanity that sustain the people living in the many marginalized, disenfranchised communities in Brazil and around the world, and Búzios, which explores the role that “jogo de búzios,” an enigmatic and mystical game of divination, plays in everyday life in Brazil. The company will round out its program with its 2013 dance Fé do Sertão. Sertão, a largely rural area of Northeastern Brazil is known for its extremely arid climate and brief growing season, which has also helped foster its strong faith and the closeknit communities that support one another through many lean months of the year. Viera’s piece honors that community with a dance that fetes the esteemed Festival of São João, which celebrates the end of the rainy season and the annual corn harvest. Artistic Director Jelon Vieira – one of the staunchest proponents of Capoeira, a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics and music – founded DanceBrazil in 1977. Initially formed from grassroots workshops at the Clark Center for the Arts in New York City, Vieira and Loremil Machado were among the first artists to bring traditional AfroBrazilian dance to the United States. Alvin Ailey, who would join his board of directors in 1980, was the one who suggested the name and in its early days helped focus the objectives of the company. For 38 years, Vieira has led the com- TD Jakes and asked his thoughts. He explained that if you’re going to do it, make sure you that you show your family creed. Understand there will be challenges, don’t be afraid of those challenges. CCN: Wow, so you all went in prepared. Good job. Now, Mrs. Tankard, is this something you wanted to do? Was it easy for you? Mrs. Tankard: Well, it’s funny I always like to say I’m so real, so it was good, until those camera’s came in (laughter). It was not that easy, it took a minute to grow into the authenticity for filming. Knowing that you can’t just cut camera’s off when an issue arises. CCN: I can completely understand that. Now, you guys have a big family and you do so much, how do you handle it all? Mrs. Tankard: I try not to think about it, take it day-by-day, prayer and the grace of God. I ask God everyday for wisdom and strength for my family and me. CCN: Big prayer. Wow! Ok, so I understand you have created a church called Destiny Center Church and it is non-salaried. Why? That’s not what you hear pany in breathtaking performances for audiences in Europe, Asia and the United States, as well as in his home country of Brazil. In 2008, he was awarded one of 11 National Heritage Fellowships, the United States’ highest honor for those in the folk and traditional arts. The New York Times said, “the performers of DanceBrazil exist in a ravishing, hard-working paradise … what matters here above all is the gorgeously full physicality of movement, allied to music. The beauty and style of these dancers is already a treat to the senses. Legs maintain powerful extensions like searchlights. The pliancy of those torsos is often breathtaking — not just in the way backs tip so powerfully and freely this way and that, but also in the ways that shoulders or stomach muscles contract and pulsate rhythmically. The dancers glow enthusiastically as they let rip at highest energy.” DanceBrazil is also offering student masterclasses with a limited number of places held for the public. On February 5 at 6pm, an Afro-Brazilian Class (all ages welcome) is based on the traditional and contemporary dances developed in the northeastern state of Bahia. The movements are based on the gesture of the Orixás dance, the energetic Maculele and the beautiful samba de roda and other influences from the folkloric dances in the region of Bahia. The class will be accompanied by live drumming. On February 7 at 11 am, a Capoeira class (all ages welcome) will concentrate on the Afro-Brazilian art form which combines fight, dance, rhythm and movement. Capoeira was originally developed by Africans brought to Brazil as slaves in the 1500s. The most preachers do? Mr. & Mrs. Tankard: Well, we do hope to get there one day so the church can sustain itself. But it just so happens that we already had the money to do it. It started from just bible study in our home and then we just thought well, let’s just do this. Get a building, this is the name and continue doing what we’re already doing/living. CCN: interjects, what makes you want to give back like that? Mr. Tankard says, well in Matthew 6 verse 33 ‘But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteous; and all these things shall be added unto you. So, the higher you go in life, you must be a blessing to others. CCN: I think that’s amazing. I commend that. Goodness. Now, Mr. Tankard, basketball, pilot, music, pastor, mentor, Mrs. Tankard and this big family, where do you find the time. Mr. Tankard, says you’d be surprised what you can do if you wasn’t in your phone twenty times a day. *Funny, yet true. CCN: Mr. and Mrs. Tankard were very sweet, humble and a joy to speak with. A fun tidbit about them; Mr. Tankard loves deep-sea fishing and Mrs. Tankard is like us ladies, she is a spa and shopping woman. A day after winning the top honor at the Producer Guild Awards, the film won best ensemble at Sunday night’s 21 annual Screen Actors Guild – which are both seen as highly predictive of which films will triumph at the Oscars next month. Richard Linklater’s “Boyhood,” the acclaimed indie made with the unprecedented real-life time-elapse of 12 years, has long held as the awards seasons favorite. But “Birdman” fills the role of a classic Oscar winner, like “Shakespeare in Love,” as a celebration of showbiz. He accepted the best ensemble award with his co-stars including Emma Stone, Edward Norton and Zach Galifianakis. Yet Keaton also lost at the SAGs, held Sunday at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Instead, most outstanding actor went to “The Theory of Everything” star Eddie Redmayne, whose exceeding technical performance as Stephen Hawking has equally drawn raves. Looking down at his blue statuette — “this very wonderful skinny man,” he said — Redmayne dedicated the SAG Award to sufferers and victims of ALS. The other Oscar favorites — Julianne Moore, Patricia Arquette and J.K. Simmons — all cemented their front-runner status in a glamorous, self-congratulatory ceremony that can serve as a test-run for acceptance speeches.
