The Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany
Just prior to his ascension into heaven, the very last words Jesus says to his apostles are
about mission: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and
you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the
earth.” When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took
him out of their sight. (Acts 1:8)
To be a witness to Jesus is to love others and serve others as he did. Jesus specifies that this
service is to take place in Jerusalem (locally), in Judea (surrounding areas), in Samaria
(places we’d rather not go) and to the ends of the earth (worldwide). Over the next few
months, there are many opportunities to serve others domestically and abroad. Here are a
few highlights:

Our mission will be to provide a Bible school/summer camp for the girls at Our Little
Roses Home for Girls. This is a great trip for teenagers and parents to do together. The

This will be our third summer of partnering with project:HOMES and other local agencies
to immerse ourselves in service right here in our own community. This will be a fun week

We will return to Barnes Mountain, Kentucky, to serve at St. Timothy’s Episcopal
Outreach Center. Our team will live and work in the community, helping residents with
home repairs and improvements and harvesting healthy foods from sustainable gardens

ANNUAL PARISH MEETING – FEBRUARY 15
The Annual Parish Meeting will be held next Sunday, February 15 at 10:15 a.m. in
the Sanctuary. We will review the activities of the parish over the past year and elect
new members to the vestry. Regularly scheduled Youth and Adult Study Hour classes
and activities will be suspended for the morning so that you may have an opportunity
to attend and participate.
CARITAS RALLY FOR CHILDREN
During the Annual Meeting on February 15, all Sunday school children are invited to
CARITAS Rally in Valentine Hall. We will decorate cards and tablecloths for
CARITAS guests, watch a video about homelessness, and learn ways we can serve
others.
MARDI GRAS FOR MISSIONS – FEBRUARY 17
The best party of the season is right around the corner! Our annual Mardi Gras for
Missions is Tuesday, February 17 in the Michaux House. All fun begins at 6:00 p.m.
with fabulous food and music in the basement where you can view silent auction
items. Then we’ll move upstairs for a live auction in Valentine Hall. Tickets are $30 in

Supper Club is an informal potluck dinner for 8-10 adults, and an opportunity for

WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT ST. JAMES’S
Join us Wednesday nights for dinner and Christian study or choir rehearsal. Evening
Prayer is at 5:30 p.m. in the chapel. Fellowship also begins at 5:30 p.m. in Valentine
Hall, followed by supper at 6:00 p.m. This week Pilgrim’s Path, Christian Journey,
and West Gallery Choir rehearsal begin at 7:00 p.m. In Christian Journey, Mark
Cooper will continue his report on the recent Episcopal conference on world-wide
economic disparity and how the church can relate to that.

SUNDAY SCHOOL IN LENT
Legos are going to be incorporated into upcoming Sunday school lessons. We are
accepting donations of Lego bricks, mini-figures, and baseplates. Workshop leaders
are needed for 2nd-5th grades for The Lord’s Supper lesson February 22, March 1, 15
and 22. The workshops will be Art, Cooking, Legos, and Service. Please contact Becky

NO FRILLS LENTEN BIBLE STUDY
A lectionary-based Bible study will take place on Monday mornings in Lent in the
Fagan Parlor in the Michaux House. The group will meet at 7:00 a.m. beginning

YOUTH SUMMER MISSION TRIPS
The Junior High Youth Mini-Mission Trip to Exmore, VA, will be July 10-12 for
current 5th-7th graders. The Senior High Youth Mission Trip to Blackfeet Nation
Reservation, Montana will be July 11-18 for current 8 th-12th graders. Scholarships

GROUP SIT
Gena Adams-Riley, meditation teacher in Richmond, offers an ongoing Group Sit to
St. James’s on the second Friday morning of the month (February 13) in room 306 of
the Michaux House. Beginning and long-time sitters are welcome. Following the sit,
Gena will give a talk on Meditation Basics, Vulnerability, Ego, Grief, and
Mindfulness. A meditation group for children 2nd-5th grades is offered on the third

God knows my name is an anthem that I composed in the summer of 2001 for St.
James’s Vacation Bible School. The anthem is brought to mind by a verse from
today’s psalm: “He counts the number of the stars and calls them all by their names.”
Jesu, who ought to be praised is an anthem that I composed based on the Irish tune
Gartan, from the Petrie Collection of Irish Melodies (1902). The text is from Carmina
Gadelica, a collection of verse compiled by Alexander Carmichael (1832-1912). The
poem emphasizes the presence of God in all of, recognizing that everything good
comes from God, to be enjoyed for itself and as a reflection of its creator.
The Children’s Choir has adopted “Care of the Earth” as the
2014-15 theme. The choir mantra is “What needs to be done to
better care for the earth? What can I do to better care for the
earth?” Inspired by the Pastoral Message on Climate Change
issued by Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, we have
adopted “For the beauty of the earth” as our hymn. Working in
tandem with St. James’s recently-formed Stewards of the Earth Committee (Britt
Van Deusen and Monica Lewis, co-chairs), the Children’s Choir is learning about
the environment and working to do its part to better care for God’s creation. Last fall
the World Wildlife Fund reported that between 1970 and 2010 populations of
mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish around the globe dropped 52 percent.
God’s creation appears to be in serious peril. The crosses with GREEN ribbons worn
by the Children’s Choir are symbols of a commitment to be part of the solution.
Go worship at Emmanuel’s feet is an American folk hymn from The American Vocalist,
published by the Rev. D. H. Lawrence in Boston in 1849. In response to the growing
popularity of hymn singing during the early nineteenth century, numerous hymnals
like The American Vocalist appeared across the eastern United States. Most were
oblong-shaped volumes of shape note music with instructions in the rudiments of
music at the beginning. The words of “Go worship at Emmanuel’s feet” draw on the
Biblical images of Jesus as a fountain, a sun, a tree, a rose, a star, the way, the door,
and the rock. The faith and optimism of the text in matched by music that is
reminiscent of the melodies of the composer Stephen Foster.
11:15 A.M. SERVICE
Easter Chorale is by the 20-century American composer Samuel Barber (1910-81).
While the title of the anthem refers to Easter, the text by pack Browning is filled with
images of light – a central theme of Epiphany. The anthem was composed for the
dedication of the Bell tower of Washington National Cathedral in 1964.
The first canticle is a setting of the Te Deum by 20th-century English composer
Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958). Vaughan Williams He made a major
contribution to the church’s hymnody. He was the editor of The English Hymnal
(1906) and composer and arranger of numerous hymns, thirty-three of which
appear in The Hymnal 1982.
O God, thou art my God is by the English composer Henry Purcell (1659-95).
Purcell was the most important English composer of the Baroque period and one the
greatest of all English composers. He was organist of Westminster Abbey and at the
Chapel Royal, where he served under Charles II, James II, and William III.
NEXT SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 15 AT 11:15 A.M.: CHORAL EUCHARIST
Next Sunday, February 15, at 11:15 a.m. the musical portions of the Eucharist
(Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei) will be sung by the choir. We will sing the
Communion Service in F by Herbert Sumsion (1899-1995). Sumsion was organist at
Gloucester Cathedral, where St. James’s Choir was in residence in 2003.
