THOUGHTS . . . from Deacon Fran Our reading today brings us an interesting contrast, “Suffering to Healing.” In the reading from Job we see suffering, futility and frustration that we as humans feel when we have sickness and/or worry in our lives. In contrast, our Gospel shows us how we are relieved of this suffering when we allow JESUS into our lives. Jesus is the Divine Physician whether it is physical, mental or spiritual sickness He is still healing today. God uses healing to tell all of us that “HE IS FOR REAL.” Come to Him and receive His healing gift then share this with all so they too will believe. ********************************* Altar Servers for Next Week 5:30 PM 7:30 AM 9:30 AM 11:30 AM 6:00 PM Saturday, February 14 Matt Barbera, Sophia Maniscalco Sunday, February 15 Jack Strohm, Kyle McCullough Andrew Santoleri, Julian Strickland Dawson Sakowski, Casey Close Cassie Marchese, Michael Marchese ********************************* Prayer to St. Michael – St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in this day of battle. From there you will be directed to a page that says: Click here to sign for Saint Thomas the Apostle Parish Giving. You will be guided on how to sign up. ********************************* St. James High School Alumni Association will be hosting an informational scholarship workshop for 8th grade & high school student parents on Wed., Feb. 18th at 7pm at the Alumni Headquarters, the “Doghouse” 1499 E. 9th St., Eddystone, PA. The agenda will address scholarship eligibility requirements & the program application & selection process. Questions may be directed to [email protected] or 610-8762006 prior to the Workshop. Thank you to all our members who are currently using Electronic Giving. Your support is greatly appreciated. ********************************* There will be a Music Wedding Workshop on Wednesday, February 11 at 7pm in the Church for brides & grooms getting married at St. Thomas in 2015. This is an opportunity to hear many wedding selections from our talented St. Thomas singers. Everyone from the wedding party is welcome to attend. Questions? Contact Maria McAnulty 610-636-4557 or [email protected]. ********************************* It’s a Gala year! The St. Thomas Gala Dinner Dance & Auction will be Saturday, March 7th from 6pm to 12 at the Concordville Inn. Enjoy an evening with good friends, delicious food & lots of dancing. Bid on a variety of auction items to support our parish. Tickets will be $100/each & include hors d’oeuvres, a 4-course meal & 6 hour open bar. Contact [email protected] for additional information. Meager Meals This Lenten program brings together three to five individuals, couples or families to share a meal approximately once a week during Lent. Each time a different family hosts the meal and selects the menu. The “catch” is that the cost of the meal cannot exceed $2/person… mirroring the financial plight of the poor in their daily struggles. Are you up to this challenge? In the spirit of “giving up” something for Lent, each guest is asked to pay the host for their meal (a donation of $5/adult, $2/child, maximum of $15/family is requested). This money supports the ongoing work of the Caring & Sharing Ministry. So, get a group of friends or neighbors together to participate! Or call us and we will match you up with a group that is forming. This is a fun and interesting way to meet other parishioners while reflecting on the meaning of Lent. For more information, contact Sue Carroll 610-4166849 or Maria Gbur 484-832-6149. ********************************* This year Man Up Philly will be holding the 7th annual Men’s Spirituality Conference in Philadelphia. All men of the Archdiocese are encouraged to participate in the inspiring time of faith and sharing. Experience the area’s largest Men’s Spirituality conference first-hand and join others who are ready to Man-Up, by living their true calling. When: Saturday, March 7, 2015 Where: St. Joseph’s University Hagan Arena Registration: Order tickets online at www.ManUpPhilly.com/Registration For more information or to request financial support visit www.ManUpPhilly.com 2 97. St. Thomas the Apostle Our first three chapters reviewed basic Christian faith. We saw how confidence in Jesus opens the door to faith, enabling us to know God and what God has done in history. God creates male and female in His image, and makes a covenant with Israel and the Church. God is faithful to His promises, even when we sin. Because God loved us in this way, we spend our lives trying to return our love to God and share it with our neighbor. In this month’s chapter and in the chapters to come, we will study the implications of these doctrines for marriage and the family. When husband and wife promise to love each other as God loves us all, they make a commitment to love not only romantically, but also with mercy and forgiveness. Our culture sometimes teaches us to think of marriage as a negotiable contract between two individuals who happen to feel sexual chemistry. This view of love s a recipe for instability, since it is still premised on individualism and the waxing and waning of romantic feelings. The church’s alternative account of love enables us to transcend the culture of individualism and become who we were created to be. Founded on Christ, sustained in the sacraments, Catholic marriage builds humility and selfsacrifice into the dynamic between male and female. As this month’s chapter explains in more detail, sacramental marriage creates intimate communion even in times of suffering and hardship. “Love is our mission,” as our catechism’s title declares, because Christ’s love frees us from false, shrunken accounts of love and makes us fully alive. BIBLE STUDY NEWS! To help you grow this Lenten season, we offer a new study “The Prophets: Messengers of God’s Mercy.” The 10-week program begins the week of Feb. 16th & offered Monday evenings 7-9pm & Wednesday mornings 9-11am in the Parish Center. Contact: Carol Szkudlapski 610-459-8040 or [email protected]. ********************************* Registration for the World Meeting of Families September 22-25, 2015 is now open! The Respect Life Committee want to thank all those who joined us on the bus to Washington, DC for the March for Life. We also want to thank all those who could not be with us but who prayed with us in spirit. Please continue to pray for an end to the culture of death & that all will soon realize that Life is a Precious Gift from God. To register for the World Meeting, or to learn more visit WorldMeeting2015.org and go to the “Register” page. 97. St. Thomas the Apostle ********************************* 3 Monday, February 9 Chaplet of Divine Mercy – 7:45 a.m. (C) Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament – 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (Chapel) Home & School – 6:30 p.m. (SH) Rosary & Chaplet of Divine Mercy – 7:00 p.m. (Chapel) From Father Francis… We hear this Sunday of Jesus healing the fever of Simon’s mother-in-law. What happened afterwards is interesting. The Scripture says she “waited on them,” she served them. Once “whole” she saw her job was to be of service to the Master. This serves as a great meditation for us. How do we serve Him or how often do we serve Him. His Mission is to make us whole. We help Him do that by giving of our time in service to our family, our Parish and wherever the need arises to “wait on them.” do we and how often do we? Tuesday, February 10 Chaplet of Divine Mercy – 7:45 a.m. (C) Wednesday, February 11 Chaplet of Divine Mercy – 7:45 a.m. (C) Bible Study – 7:00 p.m. (PC) Thursday, February 12 Chaplet of Divine Mercy – 7:45 a.m. (C) Bible Study – 9:00 a.m. (PC) Knights of Columbus – 7:30 p.m. (SH) Mass in the Old Church – The Sunday Mass in the 1852 Church will begin at 9:15am. The popularity of this Mass has exceeded the capacity of the building. Hence, when the Church is filled we will direct the overflow to attend the 9:30am Mass in the Main Church. Know that I am grateful for your interest in attending this Mass. Friday, February 13 Chaplet of Divine Mercy – 7:45 a.m. (C) S.A.C.R.E.D. For more information, pick up a flyer in the narthex. Change in Mass Times – Beginning on Saturday, March 7th the Vigil Mass will be at 5:00p.m. instead of 5:30p.m. the Sunday evening Mass beginning on March 8th will be at 5:00p.m. rather than 6:00p.m. A number of senior citizens have asked for the change citing driving in the later hours of the day. Please be advised of this change. Confession time on Saturday will be from 4:00p.m. until 4:45p.m. Lent’s a Comin’ – Ash Wednesday is February 18th. It’s not too early to be thinking about what I should be doing for Lent or what needs to change in my life to be closer to the Lord. The Church suggests the three time honored disciplines to help us with Lent. Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. Don’t wait until Lent begins to start figuring out what I should be doing. Start now! All statements must be picked up at the Rectory so include your phone number so we can contact you when statements are ready for pickup. If you want your statement mailed, you must enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope. Are You a Mandated Reporter? As part of our Catholic commitment to safe environments, the Archdiocese recently updated its policies and training curriculum for mandated reporters of child abuse and neglect. These new policies reflect the Church’s commitment to always do more, as well as new Pennsylvania laws that went into effect as of December 31, 2014. If you have direct contact with children, you may be a mandated reporter. Carol Cannon is our Safe Environment Coordinator and will be working with our parish in the coming weeks to educate mandated reporters about their responsibilities and how to properly report child abuse to ChildLine, PA’s 24-hour child abuse reporting hotline. In the meantime, Carol can be reached at 610-459-2224 with any questions. Information is also available at www.childyouthrpotection.org. As we continue to do all we can to keep our children safe, also know that the Office for Child and Youth Protection provides services, resources and support toward healing for victims and survivors of child sexual abuse and their families. Victim services can be reached at 1-888 -800-8780 or [email protected].
