February 2015
VETERANS HELPING VETERANS
Commanders Message
Auxiliary President
Well here we are, already in the
second month of the New Year.
February promises to be fairly
busy starting with the Super Bowl
Chili cook-off on February 1st.
February is now here and before
you know it will be time for nominations of the new Board at the
April and May meetings and the
elections will happen at the May
meeting. Please check the Auxiliary #35 current By-laws for the specifics. It was adopted on May 6,
2014 and there were some changes
in areas. If you don’t have a copy,
please let the 1st Vice/Membership
Chairman, Mary Hafner, know and
she will get you a copy.
February 8th will the Quarterly
District meeting that will be held
at Post 231 in Fountain. That
same weekend starting on the 13th
some of us will be in Orlando for
the SEC.
The Golf Scholarship Committee
will be meeting soon; date TBD
but check the web page for further info. We need committee
members so if you are interested
please attend the meeting or contact me for information. This
year’s tournament should prove
again to be an outstanding success. The tournament will be on
Saturday May 9th at Blackstone
Golf Course. Check the calendar
for other events happening at the
Post and come on out and have a
good time.
Yours in Service
Craig
The Auxiliary is looking for some
members to help call bingo at the
post on the 4th Wednesday of each
month. You will having training on
how it is done and it is a great way
to help the Auxiliary out. It starts at
6:00pm and it usually takes about a
half hour to set up before it starts.
If interested, please contact me or
any other board member.
The Annual Soup and Salad Dinner
was a success. Many thanks goes to
the members who made all the wonderful soups, salads, breads and
desserts. It was great to see all the
people who came and enjoyed the
dinner.
Tickets are now on sale at the post
for the February 21st Mardi Gras
and Steak Night. The price is only
$12.00 per person and it covers
your meal and all the enjoyment
that will be going on during the
evening. There will be wonderful
entertainment starting at 8:00 pm by
the name of Paradise Bayou. The
bartenders have the tickets. Hurry
up and purchase by the 19th of Feb-
ISSUE 2
ruary because we need a count for
purchase of the steaks. There will
also be a 50/50 and a Mardi Gras
themed basket which will be raffled
off that night. Instead of a King and
Queen being named that night there
will be a prize for the best costume.
The proceeds will go toward the
Auxiliary #35 Scholarship that we
do every year. Come out and have a
great time and help such a worthy
cause!
In March the “Sheriff” will be back
in town! Pam Sparks will be the
Sheriff and the jail will be out back.
For only $5 a person you can pay to
have your favorite person put in jail
for a short time. It was done last
year and everyone truly enjoyed it.
This great time will be on two Saturdays during this month. The 21st and
28th. It will be an evening of good
time from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm.
Come out and enjoy the fun! The
proceeds will go to “Paws for the
Cause”.
Just a reminder that our next meeting
is Tuesday, February 3rd at 6:30 pm
at the post. Hope you see you at the
meeting!
Yours in Service,
Anna Skelton

Your trustees are still
busy. Bad news: Our distributors have been slowly raising
prices for the past 8
months. Good news: we’ve
found a way to keep from raising prices. Bad news: Butt bingo is no longer being held to
compensate.
We are now having a 9-ball
tourney the 4th Saturday each
month and thank you Chris
Everman for conducting this,
first one went very well. Once
again please try to watch our
language and cooperate with the
bartenders, they have a real
tough job as it is. Thanks to all
for a great start for 2015, watch
the calendar.

Programs
2014 was a good year for our Programs reporting, but I know we
can do better. I know that we get
busy and forget about it, but the
Post needs those reports! At the
General Membership meeting in
January, I asked everyone to turn
in a report on their Angel Tree
donations and other community
service they had done - and received over $6000 just from those
members present!
Think you don’t do anything that
would be reportable as a program? Think again. Have you
helped a neighbor with lawn
work? Did you take a bag of
clothing up to Goodwill? How
about dropping off some dog food
at the local shelter? Did you look
after someone’s pets while they
were on vacation? Visited an elderly person to check on them?
Gone on a benefit poker run?
Have you done anything, for anyone, without being paid to do it?
If so, you’ve got something that’s
reportable.
There are some misconceptions
about programs. The Post
doesn’t get any money from the
reports turned in. Instead, the
benefit is that our community service allows us to remain a nonprofit organization. Our reported
programs need to match or exceed the amount that the canteen
takes in – if not, we risk losing
out non-profit status.
There are many ways to report
your programs. You can do it
yourself by going online to the
AMVETS National web site. Select the Programs dropdown,
click on “Programs Reporting”,
then scroll down to the blue
“Report Your Programs”. You’ll
use your membership number and
set your own password. Once
you’ve done that select “Add
New Program Data” and put in
your information on the spreadsheet. If you’re not sure what category your report goes in, just
select “Other”. You’ll need a
brief description of what you did,
how many people did it, how
many hours it took, how many
miles you drove, the amount it
cost you and any cash you donated. Then select “Preview Data”
to make sure you don’t need to
make any changes, then “Submit
Data”.

To AMVETS Post #35
I would like to thank my brothers
and sisters for their prompt and deliberate actions on 11 January. The
way everyone pitched in to help me
was unforgettable. Again, thanks
and I am proud to be a part of this
family.
Sincerely,
Earl VanValkenburg
If you don’t want to do the report
on line, just fill out a report form
(located in the Post) and leave it
with the bartender and I’ll take
care of the rest. Or you can just
drop me an e-mail with your information and I’ll do the rest.
Bottom line, I know that everyone
is doing so much for others. By
reporting this information you’ll
be able to help the Post. Think
about it – what did you do this
week?

Our Crestview Dart League team out of Amvets post 35 presented Commander
Craig Sarrasin with a first place trophy for the Second Division. Our own Ken
“Sparky” Sparks brought darts into our post with the Crestview Dart League
about 15 years ago. And it continues today. In remembrance of Sparky the team
has officially changed their name from “The Crew” to “Sparky’s Crew”. And the
1st Place Medal they earned will be hanging over “Sparky’s” picture between the
two dart boards. Congratulations to “Sparky’s Crew” on their first place win.
