Smooth Sailing At The US Sailing Center
A beautiful breezy evening was the perfect backdrop for the US
Sailing Center’s “All Hands on Deck” fundraiser held on the openair second floor of the sailing center in Jensen Beach. Sailors and
supporters gathered to bid on auction items, enjoy delicious food
and raise a glass in support of the highly successful high school
sailing program.
About 80 students from Jensen Beach High School, Martin
County High School, South Fork High School, Clark Center
for Advanced Learning, The Pine School and the Marine
Oceanographic Academy, participate in weekly classes and race
in regattas.

Lacie Greenwald, a 13-year-old Martin County resident
who has been recognized as the best ski racer in the country
in her category, will be spending the next two months out
west. Lacie and her personal, world-class, master coach,
Michel Pratte of Pratte International, will be skiing at Copper
Mountain and Steamboat Springs, Colo., as well as Deer
Valley, Utah, from November until the end 2014.
The season already is shaping up very encouragingly for
Lacie. She will be putting to use new skills she mastered
during a month long training session in September in
Zermatt, Switzerland. “2014 marked a record-setting ski
season for Lacie,” commented Pratte, who provided Lacie
with comprehensive physical training and arranged for Lacie
to ski with other international competitive skiers in Zermatt,
where Lacie skied for the first time in the slalom competition.
“The focus of her training was to transition technical
skill development to an optimum level of performance
and accomplishment,” Pratte said. For Lacie, this meant
maintaining a training schedule over the summer to further
hone her technique, skills and tactics, and Zermatt was the
perfect place for developing and refining her skills.
Pratte said Lacie’s hard work paid off, “Lacie’s progress
was remarkable and her passion and determination will allow
her to succeed.”
Lacie earned a place on the prestigious AVSC (Aspen
Valley Ski & Snowboard Club) team for 2015. Their training
mission provides young professionals with an opportunity
to develop as athletes and as people through winter sports.

interviewed Lacie as a candidate for the Sports Illustrated

2014 Scouting For Food
Results
On Saturday, Nov. 8, 417 members of Boy Scouts
of America (BSA), representing 19 Scouting units in
Sailfish District, collected 20,674 pounds of food from
generous individual donors in Martin County, breaking
a 25-year food collection record for the “Scouting for
Food” program in our community. The donated food
was collected, sorted and distributed within five hours
to 11 nonprofit agencies who provide food banks or soup
kitchens within Martin County.
The Scouts would like to thank everyone in the
community who donated food to this effort, as well as
the fabulous volunteers from these organizations and
throughout the community who worked together to carry
out this project.
David Dees and Scott MacDonald, co-chairs for this
event, would like to thank the following organizations
who cooperated with BSA to achieve this goal: Waste
Management, Martin County Sheriff’s Explorer Post,
Martin County fairgrounds, Lowe’s of Stuart, Palm
City Millwork, Gulfstream Scale, Military Order of the
Purple Heart, Premier Realty Group, Town of Sewall’s
Point, City of Stuart, Tropical Farms Baptist Church,
The Grace Place, YMCA of Martin County, and the

Hobe Sound Murals – Please
Join Us In The Garden
The north wall of Bluewater Landscape’s Garden Center
and business office, at 11110 S.E. Federal Highway in Hobe
Sound, has blossomed with a little help from the Hobe Sound
Murals Project. A blank concrete wall has been transformed
into a vivid floral backdrop to complement the garden
center’s fountains, paths and foliage.
The “Bluewater Heaven” mural was completed by Hobe
Sound Murals organizer Nadia Utto and special guest artist
Heather Stevens Weese, with help from Sandra Barnett,
who runs the Bluewater Garden Center. Heather said,
“As a new resident and local artist the Hobe Sound mural
program has been a great opportunity for me to engage in
my community on both artistic and personal levels. This
mural was so appropriate for the location, with all of the
lush foliage and variety of plant species included in the
mural design.”
Eric MacLeod, president of the Bluewater Landscape,
said his vision for the mural was “to take an ordinary wall
and bring it to life. I was excited to have had the opportunity
to take part in this project. It was gratifying watching this
mural take shape day-to-day with each new plant addition.
Nadia, Heather and Sandra did a beautiful job and I highly
recommend stopping by the garden center to take a look. I
appreciate their talent and insight that resulted in a piece of
art the entire community can enjoy.”
The Hobe Sound Murals Project – whose mission is to
“Create an outdoor gallery of beautiful walls, honoring our
past history, present vitality and future promise” – began
transforming Hobe Sound with creative murals on Bridge
Road in early 2009. Murals have been completed along
Bridge Road, on Dixie and Federal Highways and in Banner
Lake Park, thanks to sponsorship by building owners and
tenants, general public support and the efforts of over 30
local artists. Bluewater Heaven is the 16th mural.
This year’s projects will concentrate on Federal Highway,
supporting the goal of visually connecting Hobe Sound’s
main business corridors and, ultimately, offering mural tours.
Hobe Sound Murals is part of Landmark Arts Inc., a nonprofit
organization with the mission of “Creating Community
Culture.”

to participate in the annual Jonathan Dickinson State Park
Christmas Bird Count on Sunday, Dec. 28. Experienced and
amateur birders are all welcomed, with assignments available
from Juno Beach to Hobe Sound. Any commitment of time
is appreciated.
This count is a part of the National Audubon Society’s
Christmas Bird Count, which began over a century ago and

Martin County Girl Scouts
Donate 5,300 Pounds To
House Of Hope
Since 1997, Girl Scouts in Martin County have hosted
an annual food drive to support local organizations that help
families in need. This year they held their weeklong food
drive in October. Troops passed out door hangers asking for
donations from their neighbors, encouraged their schools and
churches to set up collection boxes and used donated funds
to purchase other food staple items. Their hard work paid
off and on Oct. 25, they donated a whopping 5,300 pounds
of food to House of Hope.
“We appreciate the ongoing
support that our local Girl Scout
troops provide each year,” said
Diane Tomasik, communications
director for House of Hope. “Food
drives like theirs are one of the
primary ways we fill our shelves.”
During the drop-off day at House
of Hope, Girl Scouts weighed their
donated items, helped mark and sort
the food and got a brief tour and
explanation of how the food pantry
operates.
The much-needed donations
will help House of Hope support
their clients, many of whom may
fall between the cracks of local
social programs. These are people
who are short a paycheck, between
jobs or are seeing their hours
reduced and need a hand to get
through.
Katelyn, Sydney and Ashlee from Troop 30268 help sort some of the canned goods.
Their troop donated 171 pounds of food.
Troop 30233 from St. Joseph’s School dropped off two
shopping carts full of donated items totaling 231 pounds
of food.

The cooler weather on the Treasure Coast, unlike places
further north, does not bring colorful leaves that offer majestic
photo opportunities. It also does not bring snow or remind us
that many below zero days are just around the corner.
Instead, it offers a change in fishing opportunities.
Flounder and pompano are starting to show up inshore.
Dolphin and black fin tuna are showing up in fish boxes.
Spanish mackerel are starting to show up everywhere.
If you are like I am, this time of year gives me the urge
to go hunting. As I am writing this, I am also getting ready
to leave for Wisconsin. Their deer gun season runs during
the week of Thanksgiving.
Besides giving me a chance to hunt with my son, three
grandsons and friends, this annual trip also serves as a
reminder of why I moved to Florida. Nothing like sitting
in the woods for eight hours on a frozen tree stump, in near
below zero weather, to help a person get over any lingering
thoughts of homesickness.
The holidays often involve visitors that also want to fish.
My first choice, for the serious angler, would be to hire one
of the many good charter boats or fishing guides that we have
on the Treasure Coast. We have guides for everything from
beach fishing to offshore.
A less expensive great choice would be the safari. Halfday trips for up to 40 people, will almost always result in

Hundreds Do The Mutt March
Strut To Raise Funds For Shelter
Animals

Lions and tigers and bears were among the creatures
at the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast’s 12th Annual
Mutt March at Memorial Park in Stuart. Of course, it was
the creatively crafted costumes that set these animals apart.
Underneath the masks and outfits, there were fun-loving
dogs that walked through the park with their proud owners.
The proceeds raised from this event totaled more than
$32,000 and donations are still being accepted.
U.S. Congressman Patrick Murphy and HSTC
President and CEO Frank Valente led the walk around the
park. Jennifer Ross of Sunny 107.9 emceed the event and
announced Misty’s Pet Pals as the top “pack” fundraiser,
with the Woof Pack and The White Family following. The
top “individual” fundraisers were HSTC volunteers Milena
and Austin Gifford and Shaun Kelly. Luck was with George
and Dana Coates during the random raffle drawing. They
won the $1,000 American Express gift card while Terri
Paiva won a $500 card and Nicole Grow won $250.
The pet costume contest generated plenty of oohs, ahs
Brigid Strain and Easton with U.S. Congressman Patrick
Murphy
and laughs, and prizes were awarded.
Best of Show went to Shaun Kelly,
Brenda Woolston and Lisa Barrett, who
dressed up as the Tin Man, Dorothy
and Scarecrow, respectively, from
The Wizard of Oz. Their dogs, Hunter,
Maggie and Daniel, dressed as the tiger,
Toto and the lion. Sina Crittenden’s dog
Charlie, in his aviator costume, was
deemed “Funniest.” Linda Motz and her
dog, Bob, decked out in Christmas attire
with an elf on the shelf, tied for “Most
Original” with Desiree Dubek-Uram
and her dog, Spicoli, going Bob Marley
style in reggae outfits. Bob Boyhan and
his dogs, Mitty and Ebony, appeared
as red devils and won in the “Cutest”
category.

Give The Gift Of Being
Present This Holiday Season

As the holiday season
approaches, do you find
yourself looking forward
with excitement or are you
already exhausted? Are you
going through the motions,
making preparations or are
you enjoying the moment,
spending quality time with
family and friends and
finding inner joy? Recently, I have been doing a lot of work
on living in the present. By this I mean staying focused on
what is going on right now instead of letting my mind wonder
down the rabbit hole of endless To Do Lists. Being present
takes a great deal of discipline and practice. This may sound
silly but developing your Present Moment Awareness (PMA)
skill set isn’t as easy as it sounds. The reality is you can’t
be present if you are worrying, thinking and planning all
the time. When you live the better part of your life in your
head, through your thoughts, you are not fully experiencing
all that this life has to offer. After a weekend seminar with
Oprah and Deepak, I decided to practice PMA. As a tool, The

to download for free. I highly encourage you to check them
out at chopracentermeditation.com.
Here is a simple exercise that might help you get started
on your path to living your life in the present moment. Begin
by tapping into the five senses. Many people go through life
unaware of the beauty that surrounds them. Find a quiet place,
be still and focus on your breath, relax and become present
with the sights, sounds, smells, tastes and touches around you.
See the colors, touch your skin or clothes, smell the air, listen
to the sounds, notice the taste of food or a piece of candy. Go
through all five senses and really become aware of the difference
between your thoughts and what you are experiencing with your
senses. Stay fully aware and try to remain in that state. Repeat
the exercise whenever you start to slip back into your thoughts.
Once you have mastered this, try to apply the experience
to your daily routine. Instead of operating on auto-pilot try
being fully aware of what you are doing. Practice living in
the moment not thinking about the future or the past. When
you catch yourself slipping into your thoughts, or casting
judgment, go back through the sensory awareness exercise.
There are a number of benefits to living in the present.
People connect with you on a deeper level. They like being
around you more because they feel heard. You experience more
joy and gratitude for the people in your life. Once you make the
determination that you can’t work everything out in your mind,
your heart will kick in to guide you. Suddenly you will shift
into the present and start to image the possibilities instead of
the restrictions. Start by being still, let go of critical judgments
and limitations and focus on present moment opportunities

For Family Caregivers

around the corner, there are
so many added activities that
add to the already stressedout family caregiver. Caring
for a loved one has its own
challenges, but add in extra
shopping, parties, decorating,
meal preparations, baking,
etc. can make them feel
trapped in their obligations.
The key to preventing caregiver burnout is implementing
periods of respite. This can entail short daily breaks in the
caregiver’s schedule, regular days off each week and also
extended time off, such as a vacation. Substitute caregivers
need to be in place to provide care and supervision in the
absence of the family caregiver. A good source for professional
caregivers is a licensed home health care nurse registry.

Reservations For Two, Please

I don’t know about you,
but our year has been go,
go, go! We had parties,
winetastings, entertaining
with family and friends with
a little work in between.
This Christmas it is time for
Cyndie and me to slow down,
take a breath and reflect on
our good fortune. In other
words, we want to be alone for one night!
I am planning an intimate dinner for the two of us in our
home with champagne, candles, great food and wine with a
formal dinner table setting.
After I remove the cork from the champagne bottle and
pour us a glass of the bubbly, I am beginning with a cranberry
spinach salad made with dried cranberries, blanched slivered
almonds, poppy seeds and a delicate apple cider dressing.
For dinner we are enjoying broiled lamp chops drizzled
with a rosemary-mint sauce and a side of potato au gratin
made with Gruyere cheese, garlic and thyme.
I will complete the dish with honey-glazed baby heirloom
carrots.
For my choice of wine we are going to indulge ourselves
with a bottle Châteauneuf-du-Pape from the French
Rhone wine region. The wine I have chosen, Beaucastel
Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2012 is expressive with flower garden
floral notes and a palate of lush black raspberry and spices.
I know, some of you might think it needs more time in the
bottle to bring this great wine to full potential, but I am sure
it will be delicious in its youth.
For dessert I’ve decided to be a little selfish and make
gingerbread Crème Brûlée complimented with a small glass
of Far Niete “Dolce” from Napa, Calif.
I always enjoyed this wine after dinner. It is normally
a blend of Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes that have
been touched with botrytis to create a heavenly sweetness.
So there it is, an intimate dinner for two.
By the way, if you remember my holiday article from last
year, you will recall I normally struggle with my parent’s
outdoor Christmas lights. This year was much easier; I had
some great supervision from Buddy. You remember Buddy,
our family puppy. I took a picture of him as I was on the
roof attending to the lights. As you can see I was left in good
hands.

Idiopathic Or ‘Old Dog’
Vestibular Disease
The vestibular
system involves
portions of both the
brain and ear and is
responsible for giving
mammals balance
and a sense of spatial
orientation. When the vestibular system malfunctions, it may
be due to problems within the inner ear (peripheral) or less
commonly, within the central nervous system (central).
Regardless of the cause, the symptoms are often the same.
Dogs with vestibular disease typically have a head tilt, are
unsteady on their feet and may walk in a circle in the same
direction. Their eyes may have an unusual movement back
and forth or up and down called nystagmus. In severe cases,
they may not be able to stand and even roll over and over
on the ground. Because they often feel dizzy, dogs may also
exhibit nausea or vomiting.
Any dogs that exhibit these signs should be examined
by a veterinarian. A physical examination including a
neurological assessment will determine if the vestibular
disease is peripheral or central. If the much more common
peripheral form of the condition is identified, your pet’s
ears will be examined for a possible infection or polyp. If
the central form is suspected, blood work or imaging may
be indicated to look for underlying inflammatory disease,
infection, trauma or bleeding in the brain, loss of blood flow
or cancer. It is important to note that we often don’t identify
the cause of vestibular disease in elderly dogs. In this case,
it is classified as idiopathic vestibular disease which is a
peripheral problem.
There is no specific treatment for vestibular disease,
particularly the geriatric form. Supportive care is generally
recommended and keeping your pet confined is important
since they are unsteady on their feet. Keeping them in a
quiet, low light area in a smaller space will keep them from
being so confused. Anti-nausea medications can be given to
help alleviate vomiting. Some dogs will need to be handfed
to maintain nutrition and given intravenous fluid therapy to
maintain hydration.
Most dogs with idiopathic vestibular disease will make a
full recovery. Others may have a mild head tilt that persists
or unsteadiness on their feet when shaking their head. These
neurologic deficits are rarely serious enough to adversely
affect their quality of life. It is important to remember that a
dog can occasionally have more than one bout of idiopathic
disease and is very important to see a veterinarian anytime
you suspect the condition.
