Business Leaders Recognized At Hobe Sound Chamber’s
Installation And Awards Luncheon
On Friday, Dec. 12 the Hobe Sound Chamber of Commerce
installed 17 directors and recognized nine members at the
annual Holiday Installation & Awards Luncheon at Mariner
Sands Country Club. The chamber hosted more than 100
guests for the special luncheon sponsored by Chapman &
Plymale Law, Dennis Root & Associates, Jupiter Medical
Center and Metz Construction Company.
After Commissioner Anne Scott installed the 2015
Board of Directors, the chamber’s executive director Angela
Hoffman and Past President Charlene Oakowsky presented
an awards ceremony.
The Hobe Sound Chamber congratulates the following
award winners:
• Ambassador of the Year Award was presented to
Amber Shirk of Seacoast Bank
• Committee Chairperson of the Year Award was
presented to Michael Ennis of Michael Ennis Construction
for his leadership in coordinating the Christmas Parade for
more than 20 years.
• Marge Cabiness was recognized as the Volunteer of
the Year.
• The Small Business of the Year was awarded to Avalon
Air.
• Waste Management was recognized for their innovative
employee programs and safe environmental practices and
was the recipient of the Large Business of the Year Award.

Winners Announced For
29th Annual Hobe Sound Chamber
Christmas Parade!
On Saturday, Dec. 6 the streets of downtown Hobe Sound
were lined with red and green garland, bows and bells as
more than 4,000 excited residents and visitors waited for
the arrival of Santa Claus in the Hobe Sound Chamber
Christmas Parade. Businesses and storefronts decorated and
opened their doors to share holiday treats and entertainment.
The Mancuso Building, on the south side of Bridge Road,
transformed into a giant parade grandstand and judging
station. All the hustle and bustle marked the beginning of
the parade sponsored by Treasure Coast Irrigation/Rood
Landscape and Jupiter Medical Center.
Families arrived early to meander through historic
downtown shops and the Art Stroll that featured local crafters
and artists. Once the parade was in sight the children began
to cheer. Floats and decorated vehicles created by local
businesses, schools and organizations drifted along the

played hit songs. Kids were able to meet Ronald McDonald
and other beloved characters.
The parade judges watched the action from the grandstand
and ranked their favorite floats. Judging categories for the
entries included: Most Humorous, Best Marching, Most
Original, Best Religious and Best Overall. It was a hard
task but the judges considered each entry and awarded the
trophies to the winners on Monday, Dec. 8, 2014.

Tykes & Teens Festival Of
Trees Raises $31,000 For
Local Kids
The Seventh Annual Tykes & Teens Festival of Trees
raised $31,000 for direct patient services at the nonprofit
mental health agency and enchanted visitors with more than
40 beautifully decorated holiday trees and wreaths.
Forward Electric & Air Conditioning and RV Johnson
Insurance took first place in the Most Creative category for
the “Tree of Wisdom,” while the Marrero and Garcia families
took first in the Theme category for their entry “Les Bon
Temps Rouler at Christmas.” Sandhill Cove was the winner
of the “Most Beautiful” category for their tree “Orchids.”
Wreaths designed by Jo Cooper and donated by Dorothy
Ohlbach took first place while Harbor Community Bank
took second in the wreath category.
The weeklong festival featured a cocktail party and
auction, a holiday concert performance by the Hidden Oaks
Middle School Choir, breakfast and photos with Santa and
a tree and wreath raffle.
Heidi Monsour and Elizabeth Monastra decorated and donated a tree on behalf of the Junior League of Martin County for
the seventh year in a row. The Tykes & Teens Festival of Trees raised more than $31,000 to benefit local children in need
of mental health services.

$1,000.00 To The Hobe Sound
Early Learning Center
Dennis Root, president of Dennis Root and Associates
Inc. and founder of Dennis Root Public Safety Foundation,
has donated $1,000 to the Hobe Sound Early Learning Center
as part of their Corporate Giving Circle. He is the first donor
for the giving circle.
Since 1962, The Hobe Sound Early Learning Center
has provided affordable, high quality early childhood
education and care to our community. Their mission is to
help ensure all families receive the same early learning
opportunities for their children regardless of their financial
struggles. In an effort to keep tuition costs affordable, they
created the Corporate Giving Circle to help supplement
the cost, essentially providing every child attending with a
scholarship. Funds will also provide students with additional
partial and full scholarships, allowing them to learn, progress
and play in a nurturing, caring and safe environment.
“Root’s donation helps to ensure access to quality early
childhood education in our community, and we are so
grateful,” said Mary King, executive director of the Hobe
Sound Early Learning Center.
Root has resided in Martin County for most of his life
and takes an active role in serving his community. He
currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Hobe
Sound Chamber of Commerce and was recently elected to
serve as the chamber’s vice president for 2015.

Awards Announced
One hundred guests gathered to celebrate the mARTies Student Edition – Class of 2015 honoring
students in the visual and performing arts at the Barn Theatre on Nov. 19, 2014.
The mARTies Award recipients for the “Class of 2015” were:

Each mARTies nomination is judged for several qualities, by professional artists and knowledgeable
community leaders, including:

• their leadership in improving the quality of life in Martin County.
The mARTies Awards was born in 2003 and serves to recognize professional and student artists Brett Taylor, Savanna Webber, Madelene Wishart
for their broad contributions to our community and dedication to their art forms. This year’s inaugural
event for the Arts Council of Martin of County. The next mARTies
Sanders Award pays tribute to one of our most generous benefactors, the Lawrence A Sanders Foundation. The mARTies is a signature

How Do You Make Lasting Change?

Here we are again starting off
a new year together! What do you
plan to do differently this year?
Usually I outline resolutions
and goals and, like most of you
forget about them along the way.
Let’s do something different this
year! Begin with a commitment
to make change. To change
something about ourselves is difficult but not impossible as long as
we are willing to make an effort. Start with something small and
focus on the positive results. Avoid toxic feelings that make you feel
like you are giving something up. Change is not easy; in fact most
of the time people resist change, feel awkward and don’t want to try
new ways of doing things. We are all at different levels of readiness
throughout our lives and can only handle so much change. Some
people are risk takers while others require more time to feel secure.
Generally, if we lose focus or take the pressure off, we will revert
back to the old ways and change won’t happen.
In order to make this year different we have to be proactive,
positive and productive. Get off the fence, stop finger pointing and
blaming or as the theme song from Frozen goes…Let It Go! Here
is a bit of irony, just as I was writing this article a long-term client
called and has finally hired an in-house marketing vice president,
so I will be on my way to something new next year. Drat…change
strikes again.
In order to be positive and proactive, we must first rid ourselves
of toxic behaviors and patterns that sabotage us. These types of
behaviors often hold us back from making lasting change in our
lives. Think about any toxic behaviors that you exhibit and are
willing to eliminate. Some examples may include; not being direct
with people, using non-verbal put downs, being dogmatic, playing
games with people, being negative or not respecting other opinions.
Don’t worry, we all have our toxic habits, work on a short list and
really be honest. Once you have identified some areas that need to
be overhauled jot them down and replace them with positive and
nourishing behaviors.
For me, I am working on being present and giving others my
attention. Some other examples of replacing negative behaviors
with positive ones may be; keeping your word, treating others with
respect, keeping confidences, expressing a genuine interest, showing
appreciation to others, smiling and honestly stating desires and needs.
Once you have outlined the behaviors you want to rid yourself
of and the complimentary list of new behaviors to replace your old
ways with, you will be on your way toward making permanent and
lasting change.
The last step is to finish with a list that states what you will
do more of in 2015 and what you will do less of or stop doing all
together. Cheers, here is to making permanent change!

Your Mobile Chef
Lump Crab Croquettes

I am excited for the new year
and I look forward to sharing
with you some of my tips,
tricks and twists for cookin’
up some yummy things.
The season is beginning
and many of you will be
entertaining after a round of
golf or maybe catching up
with old friends. One of my
favorite classic appetizers
is Lump Crab Croquettes.
I recently served these at a
holiday party for some fabulous ladies and they gave the
croquettes a thumbs up! This is a recipe that can be made
ahead of time so all you have to do when you get home from
your game of golf is bring the croquettes to room temperature,
pop them in the oven for 15 minutes and you have a crowd
pleasing appetizer. You can serve them with a traditional
remoulade sauce or spice it up with a twist by adding pureed
red peppers or a crushed chipotle pepper to give your sauce
a kick!
I love to cook fish, but I hear all the time that it “smells
up my kitchen” and “I can’t stand fishy fish.” My secret is
to soak the fish in milk. All fish, even crabmeat, and you can
use any percent of milk, whole or skim. I always thought it
was my brilliant trick that I learned from days of cooking in
Texas. However, I was humbled to find that there is really
a chemical reaction that takes away the odor and the fishy
taste of fish. The casein (a protein precipitated from the milk)
binds to the fish and removes the chemical trimethylamine
which causes the fishy smell and taste.
My husband doesn’t like crab cakes with a lot of breading
so this recipe keeps the focus on the crab not the filling. I
always use the best jumbo lump crab I can find and I crush
saltines to help bind the croquettes. I also add Old Bay
seasoning to the milk as I soak it and I add more when I mix
the croquettes together.

Lump Crab Croquettes With A Traditional Remoulade
Sauce
Ingredients:
Crab Croquettes
1 pound jumbo lump crabmeat
2 cups milk
2 tablespoons Old Bay seasoning
1 sleeve of saltine crackers (crushed)
2 eggs lightly beaten
Salt and pepper to taste
Soak the lump crab and 1 tablespoon Old Bay seasoning
in a Ziploc bag with the milk overnight. Drain the crabmeat
and pat dry. Mix the crab, 1 tablespoon Old Bay, saltines and
eggs together. Take a heaping teaspoon and form small balls.
Freeze for 30 minutes (or up to 24 hours for freshness). Take
out 30 minutes before serving. Preheat oven to 450. Bake the
croquettes for 15-20 minutes or until lightly browned. Serve
with Remoulade Sauce.

Sauce
1¼ cup mayonnaise
1½ teaspoons Dijon mustard
¼ teaspoon dry mustard
1 teaspoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon smashed capers
¼ teaspoon Tabasco
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon finely chopped flat leaf parsley
1 teaspoon Meyer lemon juice
1 teaspoon lemon zest
2 green onions finely chopped
½ cup chili sauce
2 celery stalks finely chopped
1 tablespoon paprika
Salt and pepper to taste
Mix all ingredients together. Pour the mixture into a
blender or a food processor and puree. Refrigerate the sauce
and let it chill for at least two hours. It is best if you can chill
it overnight.

Add one crushed chipotle pepper

2015: The Year of the Love Movement

Happy New Year friends,
fans, and clients! Are you
ready to make it a lifechanging year?
As many of you know,
last year my team and I made
some revolutionary moves and
countless people benefited from
our boldness and commitment
to the Love Movement. For us,
2014 will always be known as
a record and life-changing year. We started a “revolution of love”
and so can you.
The best part about starting a revolution is LETTING GO
of the past and any memories, negativity or emotional baggage
that no longer serves you or others. After you do, you will find
that you have far more to give and share with those around you,
including the community. Realize, this could be the greatest
year of your life, regardless of your age.
Maslow, an American psychologist, was best known for
creating Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. We all have love and
belonging needs, which we can fulfill through friendship,
intimacy, affection and love...from work group, family,
friends, and in highest form...romantic relationships. You
can run, but you cannot hide from the basic need...to love and
be loved. When you commit your life to LOVE, doors will fly
open for you and you will naturally share your love with the
world. More love will come back to you in return.
My team and I are here to literally help improve the world,
one date at a time. We have the highest rate of satisfied clients

is boundless.
As you can see in the photos we share each week, we
are changing lives. These images prove the saying that a

If I would give you a single vital piece of dating advice for
2015 then it would be this: Join the Love Movement in one
way or another. Just do it. Get off your couch. Shut down your
computer. Stop looking for virtual love and seek out real love. Stop
whining and complaining all the time...it will make you ugly...
period. You can design a great year or you can have another year
flop and drop into the next. Right now you can change your life
and feel more alive than ever. You truly have the power to make
2015 the most revolutionary year of your life!
Everything I have shared with you, I have either experienced
myself or witnessed. I urge you to be bold and to live like you
mean it. Carpe diem: Seize the day, my friends. Eliminate
naysayers and whiners from your life in 2015, or if you can’t
shake them completely, then keep them at a distance. You
can’t change other people, but you can change your response
to them, which may in turn also change them just a little bit!
Get out of your locked cage...go outside and look around.

Seventy-five of the South Florida’s golfers played
alongside pros like Rory Sabbatini, Jaye-Marie Green and
Bob Murphy at the exclusive Medalist Golf Club on Monday,
Dec. 15. As the only charity event held at the golf course,
The Hospice Signature Golf Classic sold out for the second
year in a row.
“This event has quickly become the golf tournament
of the season,” said Greg Leach, president of Hospice of
Palm Beach County Foundation and Hospice by the Sea
Foundation. “Golf purists enjoyed an unmatched experience
while giving back to the community.”
The renowned Harmon brothers led the golf clinic. Billy
Harmon is ranked one of Golf Digest’s Top 50 instructors.
He can be seen frequently on the Golf Channel as a panelist
on the show On the Range, or a guest on the Morning Drive.
Craig Harmon is ranked one of Golf Magazine’s Top 100

Molly’s House, Polo & Paella At Port Mayaca
Committee Announced
Molly’s House Polo Committee is announced for the Feb. 7, 2015 Polo & Paella
Fundraiser held at Port Mayaca Polo Club. This annual fundraiser hosts international polo
players, memorable paella, best hat contest, raffle and, of course, the traditional half-time
champagne divot stomp.
Our returning teams will be Southern Eagle Distributing vs. Lesser, Lesser, Landy &
Smith PLLC, the match will begin at 1 p.m.
The proceeds from the event will go toward Molly’s House Adopt A Family Program.
Molly’s House has seen over 16,000 guests since its inception in 1996 with over 35 percent
of those unable to pay the $20 a night donation. The Adopt A Family Program subsidizes
those families.

Divorced Spouses Eligible For
Survivor Benefits

Social Security retirement benefits are available to
divorced spouses upon the death of their former spouse. A
surviving divorced spouse who has not remarried can receive
the same benefits as a widow or widower provided the
marriage lasted at least 10 years. These increased retirement
benefits can be substantial – up to several hundred dollars
per month.
About seven million widows and widowers receive
monthly Social Security benefits based upon their deceased
ex-spouse’s earning record. For many of these survivors,
particularly older women, these benefits keep them out of
poverty.
Benefits paid to the divorced spouse do not affect benefits
paid to the widow – or other survivors. Therefore, as a part
of estate planning, let your former spouses know of these
benefits available in the event of your death.

dead, call the Social Security
office to be “screened” for
eligibility for the divorced
spouse benefits. The Social
Security office will search its
records to determine if your
former spouse has passed
away. If you have the former
spouse’s Social Security
number, the task is easy,
but even a name and date
of birth is sufficient for the
screening. Once eligibility
is determined, the Social Security administration will also
need a copy of the marriage certificate and evidence of the
divorce – proof that you were legally married for at least
10 years. You can obtain these documents from the local
jurisdiction where the marriage and divorced occurred.
If you have divorced two spouses of marriages lasting
at least 10 years and both of those ex-spouses are deceased,
then Social Security benefits are paid based on the ex who
made the most money.
The length of marriage test does not have to be met if
the former spouse cares for a child from the marriage who
receives Social Security benefits under the deceased parent’s
record. In such case, the child is either under the age of 16
or is disabled.

Why Annual Wellness
Exams?
Most people will bring the
pets to the veterinarian when
their animals are sick so they
will get better and feel better.
However many illnesses and medical conditions do not overtly
display any symptoms for a long time. It is because of this that
veterinarians think that annual wellness exams are important and
in the case of older animals twice a year is important. Our pets
age 4-7 years for each of our years, so seeing them once a year
is like us going to the doctor every four to seven years.
Many times on routine exams, with a good history and a
good exam, we find problems that the owners are not aware of
and unfortunately may be serious. At the minimum, an annual
wellness exam or semiannual exams in older animals will possibly
reveal diseases early and make them more treatable with a better
outcome. As with humans, early detection of certain tumors,
can ensure survival and cure. In one case, I found an aggressive
tumor in the mouth that is almost always fatal. Because it was
found very early on a routine exam, surgery to remove it gave a
permanent cure for it. The exam should also include blood work
and urinalysis because in some cases we cannot diagnose early
problems even with a good exam. For instance, if we find early
kidney insufficiency, we can keep the condition under control for
a much longer period of time with special foods. This is especially
true in cats.
The blood work measures 20-30 different parameters on
how the organs are working and how the body is functioning.
We check out the kidneys, liver, pancreas, electrolytes, glucose
levels, thyroid and a CBC to tell us about anemia, infection
and inflammation. The urinalysis determines if the kidneys are
concentrating the urine, if there is an indication of diabetes, if
there is a urinary infection, possible tumors or stones in the
bladder.
The comprehensive exam is the most important part of the
annual visit, but it is important to get the needed vaccines. In cats,
they should receive a rabies and feline distemper vaccine every
three years after they have their first yearly vaccine. A feline
leukemia vaccine is administered yearly if they go outside – even
on a patio. For our canine friends, a distemper, parainfluenza and
parvovirus vaccine and a rabies vaccine is needed every three
years after the first annual set. The leptospira and bordatella
vaccines are given yearly. These mentioned vaccines are all
important vaccines to protect your pets against serious and
sometimes fatal diseases.
Unfortunately, even with good exams and blood work, we still
cannot detect some things early, but the annual exam and blood
work go a long way in detecting most diseases early with a better
long term outcome. Our furry friends and sometimes non furry
friends are unable to tell us how they feel or if they are hurting so
we have the responsibility to make sure they are in good health.

Over the year, many anglers have won awards. Most involved
catching big fish. I’m giving my highly coveted 2014 “Good Sport”
award to Lezlie Brukwicki, of Palm City.
A native of Wisconsin and a Florida resident since 1995, Lezlie
has had limited opportunities to fish offshore. She had fished on a
head boat a few times, but never went after the real monsters of the
ocean. I, with the help of Palm City resident Tom Flynn, promised
to change that.
With visions of dancing sailfish and jumping dolphin, Lezlie
told her co-workers at the Stuart Cardiology Group, how she was
going fishing with “experts.” Word has it that she even promised a
few of them fresh fish fillets, as she was sure that she would catch
more than she needed.
Lezlie and I decided to do a trial run by ourselves, before fishing
with Tom. That turned into one long six-hour boat ride without the
hint of a fish strike. Even Spanish mackerel wouldn’t bite.
Not to be discouraged, Lezlie’s feet hit the floor at 5 a.m. a
week later and she didn’t complain about the 49-degree temperature
when the big day with two fishing “experts” came. She figured it
must be a great day to fish, since the Stuart Sailfish Club’s 61st
Light Tackle Tournament and first annual Florida Sailfish Amateur
Championship was also going on.
I drove and Tom rigged baits. He told Lezlie that we would
start in 45 feet of water, so that she could catch a big kingfish on
the way to the dolphin and sailfish spots. No sooner had he spoken
and a reel screamed. OK, maybe it just whimpered.
Donning her fighting belt she grabbed the rod and began battle
with her first big ocean fish…almost. What finally came to the boat
was a 3-pound barracuda that had more teeth than anything else.
We assured her that catching a fish of any kind so soon was a
good omen. I think that she actually believed that for the first few
hours of no other bites.
We skillfully fished weed lines and color changes. We explained
how knowledgeable anglers like us understood this stuff. We then
resorted to shadowing the tournament boats.
As the day neared an end, we explained that one must always
give it one last shot. With new enthusiasm, we re-rigged baits and
headed for yet an unfished part of the ocean.
Sure enough, the reel screamed. Lezlie immediately announced
that this fish felt bigger and prepared herself for the long sought
epic battle.
Well, at least it was bigger. This barracuda would have easily
topped the scale at 4 pounds.
My guess is that Lezlie will eventually become an experienced
offshore angler. She is already convinced that fishing will be better
in 2015.

Syrah/Shiraz

They are basically the
same grapes, just from a
different part of the world. It
is dark skinned but depending
on where it is from the
characteristics in the wine can
be different. The Syrah grape
has a long history in the Rhone
area of France, and usually is
dry, full bodied with blackberry, black cherry, black plum,
blueberry, boysenberry with red fruit such as raspberry. While
the Shiraz from Australia, still intense will have a different
profile of ripe fruit, lush black fruit such as blackberry, cassis,
blueberry, raspberry liqueur and mulberry. Depending on the
use of American or French oak this grape can show vanilla,
coconut, chocolate, mocha and even baking spices. You can
imagine a wine like this with hearty food pairings. Grilled
lamb, London broil, beef stew and chili come to mind. There
is a vintner from the Rhone who is now producing great wines
from Australia. His name is Michel Chapoutier.
You cannot miss the label of Chapoutier; it is the one with
Braille. The trademark pays tribute to a man whose name
is Maurice Monier de la Sizeranne, the inventor of the first
version of abbreviated Braille.
Maurice Monier de la Sizeranne went blind at the age of
9 and went on to become an activist and publisher for the
visually impaired. Seventy-seven years after his death in
1996 Michel Chapoutier developed his first wine label in
both Braille and regular text. Congratulations to Chapoutier
for starting a trend that is leading to more wine producers
following his lead.
I recently enjoyed one of his Australian wines from
Victoria called “Mathilda.” It is brilliant, dark ruby in color
