Hobe Sound Christmas Parade
With Hope of Introducing New Cutting Edge Technology to the Community
JMC has implemented a new cutting edge technology
in the treatment of breast cancer. The New Radiation
Treatment Greatly Reduces Treatment and Recovery
Time for Breast Cancer Patients
Imagine a day when breast cancer treatment takes just
one day instead of three months. For certain women
treated with the latest advances in surgery and radiation
at Jupiter Medical Center, that day is here.
Jupiter Medical Center has implemented Electron
beam IntraOperative Radiation Therapy (e-IORT)
breast radiation therapy into its world-class
Comprehensive Breast Care Program. The Liac 12 delivers a single fraction of radiation to a tumor bed immediately following surgery.
Intraoperative radiation therapy can offer specialized
treatment for cancer patients, particularly women with
breast cancer, enabling physicians to deliver a single dose

will also excite new businesses and residents moving to
Hobe Sound,” says Jan. “So this January the Ambassador
Committee will initiate a new program coined ‘The Tool
Box Project’.” According to Jan, the Chamber’s
Ambassadors and Volunteers will distribute a cardboard
version of Jan’s toolbox to businesses and residents new to
Hobe Sound. Each “box” will be loaded with useful logoimprinted tools like tape measurers, flashlights, and picture hangers, plus coupons and special offers, all from
participating Chamber members.
The Tool Box Project offers 25 members at a time a
new opportunity to be creative with their promotional messages. One lucky major sponsor will have their
logo and message plastered right on the box.
Campaigns will rotate, giving lots of members a great
chance to make a first impression with those new to
Hobe Sound and the Chamber.
For information about participating in the “Tool Box
Project” or to learn more about the Hobe Sound
Chamber of Commerce, please contact Jan Otten at 772546-4724 or [email protected].

What’s In Your Toolbox? Hobe Sound Chamber of
Commerce Launches New Welcome Program
A community’s Chamber of Commerce says plenty
about the people who live and work there. The Hobe
Sound Chamber is no exception. Often described as lively, friendly, and active, the members genuinely walk their
talk when it comes to Chamber members doing business
with Chamber members, and encouraging their friends
and associates to do the same.
One reason for this enthusiasm is that new members
attend an orientation workshop (lunch included) to
learn about the “tools” of membership. If pictures are
worth a thousand words, attendees get an eyeful with,
well, real tools!
With her huge and very real toolbox at her side,
Director of Membership Services, Jan Otten, with tongue
in cheek, introduces assorted tools that new members can
use to “hammer” their message home and “measure
(ruler)” their success. Tool after tool comes out of the box
until new members “get it” that membership has its privileges. Jan’s tools demo must be working because Hobe
Sound boasts the largest per capita business chamber in
Martin County.
“If the tools excite new Chamber members, maybe it

of radiation to patients during their surgery. By delivering this radiation at the same time the cancerous tissue is removed, six weeks of post-operative radiation
can be reduced to one day of treatment in some cases.
“We understand how important our patients are not
only to their loved ones, but also to this community as
a whole,” said John A.P. Rimmer, MD, Medical
Director, Jupiter Medical Center’s Kristin Hoke Breast
Health Program. “Being able to get state-of-the-art care
close to home means that the women we treat get back
to their healthy, productive lives much faster, without
compromising any quality whatsoever.”
There are many benefits of e-IORT for breast cancer
patients, such as compressed treatment time, reduced
radiation exposure, and a faster return to a normal
quality of life. IORT allows radiation and surgical
oncologists to see the exact area they need to radiate
and immediately deliver a therapeutic dose to the
affected area, sparing surrounding healthy tissue.
“Not only does this reduce the time of radiation
treatment from six or seven weeks, it protects the body
from unnecessary radiation to healthy tissue,” stated
Anthony E. Addesa, MD, Medical Director of
Radiation Oncology at Jupiter Medical Center’s Ella
Milbank Foshay Cancer Center. “In addition to the
clear health benefits of this cutting-edge treatment, it
also means no skin changes, no fibrosis, no scarring,
and no hardening of the skin or other tissues. At the
end of the day, it translates into excellent outcomes for
our patients and our community as a whole.”
For some women, one dose will be all that’s needed.
For others, this will cut the required course of radiation
treatment in half. Breast cancer patients who are currently eligible for the one-day treatment protocol include
women more than 60 years of age, with tumors less than
two centimeters in size, are estrogen receptor positive,
and their lymph nodes are negative for cancer spread.
The Comprehensive Breast Care Program at Jupiter
Medical Center was the first in Palm Beach and Martin
Counties to receive the National Accreditation
Program for Breast Centers designation.

Take the Time to Ask Questions Before You Undertake an IT Project in Your Office!
By Derreck Ogden, Word of Mouth Computers and Electronics, LLC
I’ve spent a good portion of the last several years shaking my head in disbelief at some of the network closets
found in offices around the area. Nothing surprises me
anymore, but I still have to shake my head when I see
$20,000 (and usually more) in equipment in a network
for an office of five people. It’s a common occurrence that
comes largely from an existing relationship between the
business’s decision maker and a computer guy trying to
make a buck and secure a customer for life. Here’s a
recent example…
Last week, I walked into a CPA’s office who called and
asked if I could help them out with some issues. When I
got there I asked how many people worked in the office.
The customer said there were three people including
himself. He then gave me a quick tour of the office showing me the three desktop computers at the desks, one in
the conference room and we ended the tour at the small
room/closet at the back of the office where his network
equipment and server live. When the door opened, the
head shaking started. His “buddy” who had a computer
business had two computers and a server in the closet.
When I asked him what they were for, he handed me a
three-ring binder with “all” of the information I should
need. As it turns out, one of the computers was brand
new. It was purchased as a replacement for an old computer that was used for one purpose and one purpose
alone–to play Pandora on the music system in the office!
Another identical PC was sitting next to it and, apparently, that was a computer for the computer guy to use
when he was working on the system. Then there was the
server. An eight-month-old Dell with all the bells and
whistles with a price tag of approximately $8,000.
Now that I had seen the system, I went on to ask what
issues I could help with.
“Well, I’d really like you to tell me what it would cost
to get everything back into working order. We don’t have
any email right now and we haven’t for several days.”
Their computer guy had been working on the issue (of
Welcome Social Members:
Jennifer Ferrari
Ray Stewart
course at his regular hourly rate) and hadn’t shown up in
a couple days. The customer was losing confidence in his
ability to resolve the issue, but had nowhere else to go
except to another company. My project plan for him was
to spend $150 a month to host his email and website elsewhere, eliminate the server completely and use his receptionist’s computer to play Pandora. Sometimes “fixing”
means “throw it in the dumpster.”
In conclusion, when you are undergoing an IT project
in your office, take the time to make sure you understand
what is being done, how it’s going to help your company,
and what other options there are. For some “computer
guys,” today’s technology world can be very scary. Some
of them feel like their grasping at straws and they will do
anything to “lock in” a customer and that includes selling
a pile of really expensive junk that will turn your office
into a technology labyrinth that only the “computer guy”
understands (if you’re lucky). It’s much more expensive to
undo a poorly executed project than it is to implement a
good one. If you don’t understand what you’re hearing
from your IT help, don’t move forward with the project
until you do!

Time Wasters Sales People Need to Avoid – Part 1 of 3
Submitted By John Carr, JR Consulting Group
Let’s face it being a sales professional is not a 9-5 job.
When you begin your sales career whether it is in a new
industry or new company you need to be ready to put
in your time. The good news is that once you have
developed a loyal customer base and referral partner
team you will not have to work as many hours to reach
your goals. I know several very successful sales people
that work less than twenty five hours a week and make
six figure incomes. The first thing we need to establish
is how we can get to that goal, develop a plan and stick
to it. What I have found over my sales career is that it is
very easy to waste time. The time wasters in this article
are not in any particular order but you should always be
aware of them.
Depending on what type of business you are in we all
have selling hours. A client of mine sells strictly to attorneys, for the most part her selling/closing times are from
8:30am-6pm. You have to be careful not to fill your calendar with too many non-selling action items during
your selling/closing times.
1. Social Media – Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and
LinkedIn the list can go on and on. Social media is a
must for just about every business today; however I have
seen sales people get stuck on social media for several
hours a day. If you can’t hire someone to manage your
social media, make sure to utilize tools such as Hoot
Suite and tweet deck. If you are using social media take
a specific time not during selling/closing hours and put
it on your calendar.
2. Networking – that is right I said it!! If you are not
networking where your referral partners are or clients
are then you are wasting your time. Also, if you are not
leaving every single event with a possible referral part-
ner meeting then you
are wasting your time
and money.
3. Chasing the
Wrong Prospects –
Know who you are
looking for. Identify
who your prospects are
and list all of them. I
would also recommend
making a list of business/consumers that are
John Carr
not good clients for
you. Sometimes we get
wrapped in just getting any kind of sale is a good sale
and sometimes this may be true however make sure you
are not chasing the wrong prospects to help you reach
your goals.
4. Email – the technology we have at our fingertips is
great, however it can be huge distraction. As a matter of
fact the only software that is open is this article and my
phone is off. Pick a time to respond to emails every day
and your clients and prospects will know that.
Next month we will have more time wasters to avoid!
Make sure that you make the most of your day by
scheduling it properly.

Chamber Membership Program. If you would like more

Pepper Spray - Things You Should Know!
Thank You Renewals:
By Dennis Root
Since 2003
Green $ Sod
I have been training people just like you in the use of
pepper spray for over 20 years. During that time, I have
seen a vast amount of misinformation being provided by
organizations and other individuals. I would like to
answer some of the most common questions I have been
asked about a personal safety option that can be traced
back in history to as early as 300 B.C.
The first question often asked is, “What’s the difference between mace and pepper spray?” For the sake of
brevity and without being too technical, the simple
answer is “mace” is an irritant and “pepper spray” is an
inflammatory. Both rely on pain to achieve compliance.
The second most common question asked is, “I purchased ‘police strength’ pepper spray. What does that
mean?” To be painfully honest, not very much. Just
because something says “police strength” does not mean
it will necessarily be better than another product. Saying
it is “police strength” may simply be a marketing tool.
The third most common question asked is, “What
does the percentage on the canister mean?” This is one of
the best questions one can ask. The percentage helps
inform you about the product strength. For example, if
you buy a product rated at 2 million SHU and the canister indicates it is a 10 percent solution, this means the
canister contains 10 percent of 2 million SHU. If I do

my math correctly, that
would equate to
200,000 SHU. Trust
me, that is hot enough
when the pepper is
derived from a quality
source. SHU means
Scoville Heat Units,
but that is a topic for
another article.
