Applications are invited for the following post: SESSIONAL STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT ADVISER (FIXED TERM) Fixed term for 20 weeks Starting salary in the range £25,513 to £27,864 per annum pro-rata We are looking to recruit a Sessional Student Achievement Adviser to work with individual students and with groups to deliver academic skills tuition and support. The successful candidate will report to the Student Achievement Coordinator and will work alongside programme/departmental teams, including progress tutors, to encourage and support academic skill development. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic, innovative and versatile in their approach, demonstrating excellent communication skills and the ability to establish strong working relationships with students and staff. Applicants will need a good honours degree and a teaching qualification. Experience of tuition in Higher Education and a good, up-to-date knowledge of how students learn e.g. in blended learning formats and online, as well as in more traditional environments are essential. Experience of working with students from widening participation backgrounds, and those with English as a second/other language would be advantageous. In addition to English and literacy skill development, applications from those with experience of working with learners on numeracy, statistical software and ICT are welcome. Hours of work will be 35 hours per week, normally 9.00am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. This post is fixed term to support a higher than anticipated workload in the department this academic year. LEEDS TRINITY UNIVERSITY JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: Student Achievement Adviser (Fixed term) DEPARTMENT: Central Academic SALARY: £25,013 to £27,318 per annum pro rata GRADE: Grade 6 (points 23 - 26) DURATION: Fixed term for 20 weeks. HOURS OF WORK: Hours of work will be 35 hours per week Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm with one hour unpaid break for lunch each day. RESPONSIBLE TO: Student Achievement Coordinator INTERNAL CONTACTS: Director of Quality. Students, Academic staff and Support staff. EXTERNAL CONTACTS: Other HEIs, local and regional organisations. FACILITIES, SERVICES AND EQUIPMENT: Office space, computer. PURPOSE OF THE POST: To deliver student-centred academic skills tuition support to all students to achieve their potential during their period of study. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. To deliver student-centred academic skills tuition support to students by means of an appointment/drop-in system in areas to include academic writing, time management, numeracy, etc. 2. To work with academic and support staff to facilitate the academic success and personal development of all students, to include referring students to other areas of specialist support as necessary e.g. Liaison Librarians. 3. To participate in initiatives and longer term developments to improve student retention and progression as well as student achievement targets, especially in relation to underrepresented and disadvantaged groups. 4. To help students build their motivation and sense of personal and professional development. 5. To track and monitor individual students using the service to include contacting students in the early stages of their studies who are not attending/engaging and report any such incidents to the Student Achievement Coordinator. 6. To contribute to the analysis of data and preparation of reports measuring the success of activities by Student Achievement Advisers and Peer Learning Mentors. 7. To support designated academic departments and their students in events and workshops/tutorials as required/indicated by the Student Achievement Coordinator. 8. To develop and maintain links with all academic departments and with support departments such as Information Services. 9. To liaise with relevant support services to facilitate a programme of activity to promote learning skills support and curriculum & pedagogical development. 10. To liaise with the Director of Quality and Heads of Department within the University. 11. To provide training to staff and students, through contribution to programmes of crosscampus workshops and Learning and Teaching seminars in the area of Academic Skills. 12. To provide guidance to Peer Learning Mentors on operational matters as required. 13. To contribute to the development and preparation of academic skills resources (audio, video, web-based, paper-based) and encourage the integration of academic skills into the curriculum. 14. To aid students from non-UK and widening participation backgrounds in making cultural and incremental learning transitions, in order to meet the standards and expectations required at UK HE level. 15. To contribute to the development of and enhancement of blended learning through the use and production of academic skills resources. 16. To apply the University’s Equality and Diversity Policy in the postholder’s own area of responsibility and in his/her general conduct. 17. To undertake all necessary administration tasks associated with the post and such other administrative tasks as may be required by the Student Achievement Coordinator. 18. To carry out other duties, commensurate with the grade of the post, as directed by the Student Achievement Coordinator after due consultation.
