Even though it is not a holy day of obligation, twice as many people attend. The painful memories of a half-empty church on a holy day are somewhat healed by a full church at the beginning of Lent. I think this happens because most people have a real desire to “Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel” (Mark 1:15), as we hear when ashes are placed on our forehead. The other option is “Remember, you are dust, and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19, Psalm 103:14-16). We are reminded of our mortality, and the reality of judgment, which is a great impetus for repentance. Yet, in the face of these good desires, intentions, and resolutions we experience the reality of sin and the power of the temptations that lead to it. Hopelessness and discouragement follow, and those good intentions are overpowered, leaving many imprisoned as before. That is why it is so important to understand temptation. The Latin root for the word temptation means, “to try” in the sense of “to touch, feel, or handle.” It is an enticement, an invitation to experience something. The devil’s temptation to Adam and Eve was to make them desire the experience of being like God (Genesis 3:5). What makes a temptation evil is when it contradicts the will of God. Ultimately, behind every temptation is the devil, who uses our flesh, with its desires, disordered by original sin, and the things of the world. The final two petitions in the Our Father are concerned with these realities: “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” “In this petition, evil is not an abstraction, but refers to a person, Satan, the Evil One, the angel who opposes God. The devil (dia-bolos) is the one who ‘throws himself across’ God’s plan and His work of salvation accomplished in Christ” (Catechism, 2851). This is what he tries to do when he tempts Jesus in the desert. He tries to divert Him from the Father’s plan by offering Him other things that would seem better, including the whole world. He would try again later using Peter who said, when Jesus foretold His suffering and death, “God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you.” Jesus knew who was really behind this temptation and replied, “Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me” (Matt. 16:22-23). He then goes on to say, “What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?” (Matt. 16:26). And so it is with us. On this earth we will be tempted to turn away from God’s will – to try, or touch something else. These things will be presented to us as being something good and pleasurable; something that promises us happiness. But they are empty promises. Make no mistake about it; the devil is very good at temptation. Though fallen, he is still an angel, meaning that his intellect is much greater than ours; we have no chance of outsmarting him, or making a deal with him. He is “’a murderer from the beginning…a liar and the father of lies,’ Satan is ‘the deceiver of the whole world’ (Jn 8:24, Rev 12:9). Through him sin and death entered the world” (Catechism, 2852). And that is exactly what Christ saves us from. We must never give in to the temptation to believe anything else. Father Michael J. Respect Life Are You Afraid? Some people have an unfounded fear that using abortion victim photography could do harm to a woman faced with an unplanned pregnancy and wanting an abortion. You don’t lose anything by showing her the pictures. But you potentially lose something by not showing the pictures: her baby’s life! You could use this following analogy in talking with her. “Imagine there’s water with poison in it and whoever drinks it will die. Now imagine that I know there’s poison in the water and you don’t. I see you grab the glass and I don’t warn you what’s in it. You drink it and die. I have just been an accomplice to your murder! In the same way, if I know shocking things about the abortion procedure, and don’t share these things with you, I’d be withholding life-saving information. That’s not fair to you!” 4 | Churches of St. Mary & St. Michael • Stillwater, Minnesota Churches of St. Mary & St. Michael Stewardship — A Way of Life Operating Funds (Weekly collection, EFT payments and gifts used only for operating expenses for Fiscal Year July 1, 2014—June 30, 2015) ƐŽĨϮͬϴͬϮϬϭϱ Budgeted Collecons Actual Weekly Collecons ŵŽƵŶƚKǀĞƌͬ;ƐŚŽƌƚͿ ^ƚ͘DĂƌLJΖƐ ΨϮϮϴ͕ϵϭϱ ΨϮϯϲ͕ϰϱϵ Ψϳ͕ϱϰϰ ^ƚ͘DŝĐŚĂĞůΖƐ Ψϵϲϲ͕ϬϬϬ ΨϵϬϲ͕Ϯϴϳ ;Ψϱϵ͕ϳϭϯͿ Ash Wednesday Collection The collection at the Ash Wednesday Masses on February 18, will be for our outreach programs which provide assistance to our parishioners. This year is the Year of Charity. Charity seeks to foster love of God and love of neighbor. The theological virtue of charity is given to us in baptism. It allows us to love God with all our heart, mind, and strength, and our neighbor as ourselves. Like any other virtue, we must grow in charity by practicing charity. This month we learn and practice the virtue of prudence: making good decisions in specific circumstances. “It is prudence that immediately guides the judgment of conscience. The prudent man determines and directs his conduct in accordance with this judgment. With the help of this virtue we apply moral principles to particular cases without error and overcome doubts about the good to achieve and the evil to avoid.” (CCC 1806). Saintly examples are given to us to follow. For our Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders, they are learning about Blessed Junipero Serra (soon to be named a Saint!), who began missions in California for immigrants. He used the virtue of prudence in deciding where to build the missions and what was best to teach the people he served. Students in grades 3-5 learn this month about St. John Neumann. He left his native Bohemia where there were many priests to come to the United States where there were not as many. He did this because he was concerned for the faith of the people in the United States and determined it was best for him to come bring the faith to the people by establishing Catholic Schools. Students in grades 6-8 learn about Blessed John XXIII who faced many decisions with prudence during the Second Vatican Council, often with great humor and kindness. One way to make prudent decisions in having a difficult conversation with someone is given below: Speaking privately to solve a problem Plan ahead what to say. Request a private moment. Utter a prayer. Describe the deed. Effect on me. Nothing. Wait for a response. Terms Sample: P: Mentally go through all the steps R: You see the person alone in the hall; ask to talk. U: As you lead them aside, pray. “Help me, Jesus!” D: “When you poured out my beaker in lab today . . . E: . . . It really embarrassed me.” N: (Pause until the other person says something.) T: “Please don’t touch my things again or I’ll have to report it to the teacher.” May our students and our families grow to love study more that in studying truth we come to know Jesus, the way, the truth, and the life. |9 Churches of St. Mary & St. Michael St. Croix Valley Faith Formation Serving the parishes of St. Charles, St. Mary and St. Michael SCVFF Office: 651-351-3175 Website: www.sccff.net “ Come, Lord Jesus…” This Week!
