This year’s gymnastics program at the Rec is bigger and better than ever!
We are home to the Long Island Independent Gymnastics League and we boast the top 2 teams in the
league (RVC Ultimate and RVC United). The Rec. also is the home of the Rising Stars and Gymnastics
Club developmental program of 60 dedicated gymnasts who are training two days a week in the hopes of
making one of the competitive teams in the future. Our recreation program instructional classes are held 6
days a week, with a total of over 700 girls and boys in grades pre-K through 9.
This program has come a long way since the inception of the gymnastics program back in 1975. Our twodozen gymnasts used wrestling mats borrowed from South Side High School, a wooden balance beam
and free-standing uneven bars in those inaugural shows! “Sesame Street” was the first themed show in
1980, with “Rainbow Connection” as our first warm-up number.
We hope that everyone who has participated in the Fall or Winter sessions of gymnastics will be able to
participate in this year’s Gymnastics Show. Due to the fact that this is not an instructional program in the
Spring session, new students must wait until the Summer session to register when the instructional
programs begins again.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
GYMNASTS MUST WEAR A LEOTARD OR UNITARD, OF ANY STYLE AND COLOR FOR SHOW
PERFORMANCE. NO SKIRTS OR EXTRA FRILLS, PLEASE!
ABSOLUTELY NO JEWELRY FOR SHOW PERFORMANCES. WE WILL NOT TAPE OVER PIERCED
EARRINGS. PLAN ACCORDINGLY.
Once practices begin, you cannot change your registration.
Look carefully at your calendar at home and register for the class day and performance that works for you.
Please make note of the mandatory dress-rehearsals that correspond with your show. Start now to make
arrangements with soccer practices or music lessons or other obligations that may conflict. We cannot
save a place for you in a class, and do not assume that we know you will be registering!
When a show performance is closed, it is closed.
SORRY, LAST MINUTE CHANGES CANNOT BE ACCOMMODATED!
PLEASE, PLEASE CHECK YOUR CALENDARS NOW TO AVOID LAST-MINUTE DROP-OUTS AND
CONFLICTS. Even one child dropping out changes EVERYTHING!
We are blessed with a talented and dedicated group of senior gymnastics coaches, supported by our high
school staff and volunteers. The instructors will be helping your child choose one event on which she will
perform (bars, beam or vault), in addition to her floor exercise routine. Our goal is to have your child show
you her strongest skills, which may not necessarily be on her favorite event! Please support us in our
endeavor to advise her on the best choice.

LOOKING AHEAD TO TEAM TRYOUTS:
Tryouts for the competitive teams will be on Monday June 15 and Wednesday June 17. Registration
information will be available soon. Tryouts for Rising Stars and Club will be held in September.

The 40th Annual Gymnastics Shows will be held the weekend of May 29, 30 and 31. There will be performances to
accommodate all 700 children enrolled in our program. Only those who have participated in the Fall or Winter instructional
classes may register for the shows, since we will be practicing solely for the show performances – there will not be any
instruction of new skills during this Spring session.
Please choose day and time for your child’s class AND the show performance you would prefer for your child (see form below).
Gymnasts who have participated in our Fall and/or Winter instructional classes are eligible to participate in the Show. Each
child will perform in the warm-up number, on one event (vault, bars or beam) plus a floor exercise routine. THERE IS LIMITED
SPACE IN EACH SHOW PERFORMANCE, SO REGISTER EARLY TO GET YOUR PREFERRED DATE/TIME.
Registration for the Spring Session (show practice) begins on Feb. 23. Please register as soon as possible. There is a lot of
planning to do and we need to know who will be performing in this year’s extravaganza.

$105/residents and $112/non-residents for 7 practices
Gymnasts who have participated in our Fall and/or Winter instructional classes are eligible to participate in the Show. Please
inform the staff if your child will NOT be in the show.

Tickets will be sold for all spectators beginning May 4, each ticket $8 (adults and kids over age 4).
All participants must wear a leotard. Bike (lycra spandex) shorts are optional. New leotards are not required. However, if you
are looking to purchase a new one, inexpensive leotards may be purchased online. Just type “leotard” in the search, and lots of
options will come up! If you need special seating for senior citizens, let us know at time of ticket purchase!

new kindergarten students
ALL RETURNING KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS ~ SEE INFORMATIONAL FLYER REGARDING GYMNASTICS SHOW.
The Parks & Recreation Dept. is pleased to provide our 40th year of quality recreational gymnastics instruction
for children in pre-K through high school. The program follows the guidelines set by USA Gymnastics. The
Introduction to Gymnastics program will give your child the opportunity to explore the basic gymnastics
apparatus, including the tumbling, balance beam, vaulting, uneven bars. Other movement education equipment
will be used to introduce skills. All participants must be registered members of the Recreation Dept.
Registration for the Spring session of Introduction to Gymnastics begins on February 23. New non-residents
may register on March 2.

The Spring session of Boys Gymnastics for grades 1-5 will be devoted to practicing
for our annual Gymnastics Show which will be held on
Saturday May 30 at 1:00pm
The boys will perform a floor exercise routine and a routine on two other apparatus
(high bar, rings, parallel bars or vault).
Only returning students may register for the Spring session!
Practice will be held:

Plus . . . mandatory dress rehearsal on Thursday May 28 @4:00-5:00
No refunds. Credit may be issued for withdrawal before 3rd class meeting.
