Musica Nova: In memory of
Paul R. Goldstaub
Guest Artist: Pianist Gleb Ivanov
This concert celebrates the creative
imagination of Paul Goldstaub, Professor of
Composition at Binghamton University. A
diverse program of his solo and ensemble
compositions for vocal, instrumental and
keyboards will be presented by the music
faculty and students of Binghamton University
and Ithaca College.

Jonathan Biggers Lecture/Recital:
Go for Baroque!
Jonathan Biggers presents a recital featuring
“Stylus Phantasticus (Fantastic Style)” works
by Buxtehude, Böhm, Bruhns and others.
The drama of the Baroque comes to a new
height in the extremely virtuosic and fiery
works by these predecessors of J.S. Bach,
presented by Biggers on the splendid Wolff
Organ at Binghamton University.

Join Stephen Stalker, cellist,
and Stephen Zank, pianist, as
they perform three magnificent
sonatas by Beethoven, Debussy
and Franck.

Friedheim Memorial Lecture/Recital with Paul Sweeny
and Christina Salasny, soprano: Music for the
16th-century Spanish Vihuela
During the Renaissance, while the lute was
the most popular plucked instrument in
Europe, the Spanish favored the vihuela de
mano, an instrument that was tuned like a
lute but built in the shape of a guitar. This
fascinating program will include dance music,
accompanied songs, arrangements of sacred
and secular vocal music and a wide variety of
free-form fantasias.

Zachary Sweet, Binghamton University’s new
instructor of cello, and Michael Salmirs will perform
perform Leos Janácek’s “Pohádka”, Daniel
Godfrey’s “Arietta” and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s
“Sonata in G Minor”.

of style...”, Ivanov will perform compositions by
Franz Schubert and Franz Liszt.

Lontano Ensemble: Music Now! Odaline de la Martinez,
conductor and artistic director
Praised by The Observer for it’s
“thrilling” performances and The
Times as “entrancing”, the London
based ensemble Lontano presents a
varied evening of fresh, tuneful and
exciting music for strings, winds, piano
and percussion — including a recent
piece by Binghamton University’s
composition professor Daniel Thomas
Davis. The program will also feature the world premiere performance
of several short pieces written specifically for Lontano by the Music

Just Like a Concert in the Park
Although the weather may still be cold
outside, you’ll be ready for a wonderful
concert in the park as we capture the
spirit of this great summer pastime. Our
guests, the Vestal Community Band,
led by Jerry Natoli, will join Dan Fabricius and the Wind Symphony for
this enjoyable program filled with popular, amusing and patriotic music.
Guest Residency Artist: Organist Craig Phillips
Craig Phillips, one of the most noted performers and
composers in the “organ world,” presents an exciting
weekend of activities including a composition master
class, a workshop on his own compositions, and
a solo recital. The concert features his own works
including “Fanfare” and “Scenes from a Gallery,” with
Georgetta Maiolo, flute, and Janey Choi, violin, as well
as grand works by French Symphonic composers.
University Chorus and Symphony Orchestra:
Mendelssohn’s Lobgesang (Hymn of Praise)
A unique marriage of symphonic
and cantata forms, this choral/
orchestral masterpiece is also known
as Mendelssohn’s “Symphony No.
2.” The chorus and orchestra will be
joined by soloists from the Master
of Music in Opera program (sung in
English).

Music Director Timothy Perry returns to lead Binghamton
University’s 75-piece symphony orchestra in two tempestuous
masterworks of the Romantic Age: Brahms’ “Tragic Overture,
Op. 81” and Tchaikovsky›s brilliant “Symphony No. 4 in
F minor”.

Nukporfe African Drumming and Dance Ensemble
The presentation will include African music performed by a full
ensemble of drummers and dancers. African dance-drumming typically
juxtaposes several art forms
together including storytelling,
pantomime, oral history and
community wisdom. It is an
excellent way to introduce
authentic African culture to
anyone who may have little
understanding of modern Africa.

University Wind Symphony: Once Upon a Time
Wednesday, April 1
From a legend of the Pacific Northwest to music from opera, from Nordic
mythology to some very contemporary sounds replicating a train ride;
this concert presents a variety of stories told through music. Conductor
Dan Fabricius leads the Wind Symphony for a fascinating journey into
the creative minds of the composers
who created these marvelous pieces.
Highlights include Steven Reineke’s
“Fate of the Gods”, Eric Whitacre’s
“Ghost Train” and Jaromír Weinberger’s
“Polka and Fugue”.
Harmony Club Fundraiser Concert
The Harmony Club will celebrate the 200th birthday of Adolph Sax and
his inventions, and take you through a historical, musical journey of the
saxophone.
Thursday Mid-Day Concerts
Free Thursday Mid-Day Concerts will be held February 26 through May
7 at 1:20 p.m. while classes are in session.
