Visit nhti.edu/spring NHTI Launches 5 New Associate Degrees NHTI students have five new associate degree programs to choose from. T he Associate Degree in Mathematics is a practically-oriented program which includes a foundation in computer programming and three semesters of calculus-based physics, along with a range of general education requirements. This program provides a solid background for just about any type of 4-year math, physics or engineering degree a student might choose to pursue. Like many of the new programs being introduced this fall, the math degree is part of NHTI’s commitment to expanding its offerings in the STEM fields. The degree will prepare students for employment in STEM positions in industry, as well as for continued study at the baccalaureate level. The Advanced Manufacturing Processes Technology program is designed to give the student a solid foundation in the manufacturing processes related to traditional machine tools and CNC automated machining centers. There are five major interrelated areas of study: shop and tool room mathematics; interpretation and understanding of engineering drawings; knowledge of machine tool processes and the basic machine tools: lathe, milling machine, and grinder; CNC programming: mills and lathes; and CNC machine operation. Students learn the basic theory of the manufacturing processes related to machine tools in the classroom, and apply that theory on industry grade equipment in the laboratory to gain the experience necessary for employment. The manufacturing processes major field courses all contain several hours of lab time in the machine shop and/or the CNC lab. Graduates will have the foundation necessary to find employment in industry in positions such as machine operator, entry level machinist, entry level tool maker, CNC machine operator, and/or CNC programmer. The Civil Engineering Technology program responds to employer needs for graduates who can function effectively in the areas of design and maintenance of highway infrastructure and bridges, as well as structural, civil, environmental, sustainability, and an array of other construction jobs requiring specific training and education in civil engineering. This program will be of interest to individuals considering jobs in the civil engineering, construction management, surveying, and environmental engineering fields. In addition, the program provides a solid background for students seeking to transfer into baccalaureate institutions with programs like civil engineering, environmental engineering, surveying, construction management, and fire safety. As Civil Engineering Technology majors, students will learn to solve design and engineering problems by utilizing skills learned in engineering, mathematics, physics courses. General education courses such as English, economics and ethics provide additional skills and knowledge required to address both technical and workplace issues. The CET program culminates in a capstone project or independent study utilizing a wide spectrum of STEM skills. Although the new CET program is not yet accredited, NHTI plans to seek ETAC of ABET accreditation for the program as soon as possible. NHTI's new Biology program is intended for students who plan to continue their education beyond the associate degree, although students who graduate from this program will also have the skills necessary to work in the field as biological science technicians. A biology major is recommended for students interested in pursuing further study in biology, botany, zoology, ecology, microbiology, agriculture, forestry, molecular biology, cell biology, genetics or marine biology. This program also provides an excellent foundation for medical, dental and veterinary studies. Finally, the new Health Science with a Concentration in Nutrition and Wellness degree is designed to prepare students for the competitive and ever expanding fields of healthcare and personal wellness services. In addition to the core requirements for NHTI's basic Health Science Degree (32 credits), the student will be required to take courses in nutrition, pathophysiology, and personal training, and choose from among many different electives for a total of 65-70 credits. The degree provides a sound academic foundation for the student who wants to pursue an entrylevel position in nutrition, health and fitness, public health, or health education, and/or to transfer to a 4-year program in any of those fields. Advanced Manufacturing Process Technology Degree & Certificate Programs The Advanced Manufacturing Process Technology Associate Degree program (AMPT) is designed to give students a solid foundation in manufacturing processes using traditional machine tools and CNC automated machining. There are five major areas of study: shop and tool room mathematics; engineering drawings; basic machine tools and processes: lathe, milling machine, grinder; CNC programming: mills and lathes; and CNC machine operation. In order to gain the experience necessary for employment, the manufacturing processes major field courses all include several hours of time in the machine shop and/ or the CNC lab, where students apply theory learned in the classroom on industry grade equipment. After all, nobody really makes a living as an artist, right? Bonnie came to NHTI to study Landscape Design, but decided to take an art class on the side … and that was when she met Susan Haas, head of the Visual Arts department. “You know how people tell you, ‘Just follow your dream and you’ll be successful’? Susan was the first person who ever made me believe that might really be true.” ‘What are You Going to do with That?’ When she became a Visual Arts major, Bonnie found herself having to explain herself to people. “Everyone said, ‘Oh, you’re at The Tech? Are you in nursing or radiology?’ And when I told them visual arts they said, ‘What are you going to do with that?’ So I said, ‘Teach.’ It was the only answer they could understand.” Much as she loved art, Bonnie says, “I didn’t have a medium.” She hadn’t yet discovered a kind of art that really spoke to her. “Then I took my first ceramics class. I spent over 40 hours on one project! I had a vision.” Her work in that class led to an internship with the teacher at the Currier Gallery in Manchester, the first of many steps on a path toward artistic maturity and professionalism that Bonnie is still walking today. The path has by no means been straight. Bonnie started taking art classes in 2004, took time off to have a child, and restarted school in 2010. “I’ve probably taken just about every art class there is,” she says. “And not just the ones I need for the major. I know some people try to take the minimum they need for the degree, but I just want to experience everything. It’s probably not very efficient, but I learn a lot.” Awards & Honors One of Bonnie’s first major achievements was to win a full scholarship to the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts on Deer Island, Maine, a residential art school where students live and work for up to two weeks developing their skills and their vision. Subsequently, she won a prestigious Plan NH / Alfred T. Granger Student Art Trust Fellowship. “That was a huge interview,” she says, “for which I was completely unprepared. It didn’t even occur to me to bring samples of my work for them to look at. Somehow it just happened to work out.” This fall, Bonnie became the first recipient of the Visual Arts Capstone Scholarship. The award will pay her Senior Capstone Exhibition tuition, and help purchase the supplies she'll need to complete her work. Bonnie's exhibition will involve photographic imagery printed and silk screened on ceramic objects. She will also apply some of the funds toward purchasing her own ceramic kiln, making it possible to start her own independent studio. Bonnie is now thinking about 4-year schools and eventually even a master’s degree. And she’s no longer worried about whether or not what she's doing is practical. She has held a variety of clinical and administrative positions including work as a nurse’s aide, a medical assistant, medical office manager, practice manager, and director of operations for a multi-specialty clinic in California. Ms. Bjerklie has been teaching medical assisting, medical transcription and professional medical coding since the early 1990’s. NHTI Debuts New Online Employment Service NHTI has launched a new online job search service open to current students, alumni and the general public. This all-new service – powered by College Central Network (CCN) – offers far more than just a list of local jobs. Local employers can post jobs to the system and over 200 employers have signed on since the site launched in July. But job seekers using the system also have access to CCN’s nationwide listings of jobs and internships. These listings include not only jobs posted to CCN by employers, but also jobs found by CCN’s aggregator programs, which roam the web searching for job listings. Job seekers can search the listings manually, but they can also set up “agents” to watch for jobs that meet certain criteria and send out an alert when such jobs appear. But CCN offers more than just lists of job openings; it has a suite of tools to help job seekers get better at … well, at job seeking. There is the Résumé Builder, which guides users in creating a résumé which can then be uploaded to CCN so that potential employers can view it. (If you already have a stellar résumé you can simply upload that to CCN.) There is also Portfolio Central, which helps users assemble an online portfolio of their best work for employers to peruse – especially useful for people in artistic fields. NHTI at the NHCCD Architecture students pose seismic challenge at construction career event New Hampshire Construction Career Days (NHCCD) is a non-profit event which brings high school students together with the Construction & Transportation Industries to explore career options through hands-on activities. According to the NHCCD, over 1,400 high school students from 40 NH schools registered for the two day event held on September 18 & 19, 2014. NHTI Architectural Engineering Technology (AET) students Russel Rucker and Adam Clary, Professors Liaquat Khan and Veronica Carter, and Admissions representative Tom Warner participated in the event representing the Architectural Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, and Landscape & Environmental Design majors, as well as providing brochures and information for all engineering technology degree options at NHTI. NHTI presented an engineering challenge where students were given the task of constructing a model of a five story building that would survive a "seismic event" (simulated with a testing device called a shake table). The challenge was met with enthusiasm and strong interest by the students. Governor Maggie Hassan even visited the NHTI display and was introduced to the engineering challenge by Russel Rucker (see photo). A second challenge the students were able to work on while waiting for their turn at the shake table was the classic game “Jenga.” One challenge that drew onlookers was when Dr. Khan and one of AET student Russsel Rucker with Governor the students went head to head in a game of Jenga in a test of strategy, composure and center of gravity.
